I worked at Red Wing Shoe full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

I worked for the company a number of years. Enjoyed representing a good quality product. Also pleased to represent some product made in USA. Company stands behind their product. Good employee discount.

    Cons

Over the years I had several managers, my first being the best manager I've ever had in all my work experience, and my last manager being the worst manager in all my work experience, inside and outside of the company. This created a work atmosphere that varied from store to store.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Talk to the people that actually sell your product and ask for their input. The Sales Associate is the one interacting on a daily basis with the customer and hear what he or she wants and expects.

I have been working at Red Wing Shoe

    Pros

Lots of loyal employees. Wonderful work environment. Great perks like free soda, telecommuting, flexible schedules and summer hours year round.

    Cons

Distance from the metro. While Red Wing is picturesque and has a lot of things going for it, it can be hard to fill positions and attract the necessary talent because of the distance.

I have been working at Red Wing Shoe part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Not micromanaged, allowed to interact with customer on your own terms, relaxed atmosphere

    Cons

Little to no pay, not comission based, little room to improve

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make it comission based. Even giving employees 5% of the shoe they sell can be big motivation.

I have been working at Red Wing Shoe full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Good hours and benefits. I learned a lot about MDOT regulations and B2B selling. The customers are great and the have good products that generates a lot of repeat customers.

    Cons

There is to much favoritism's and politics. Outdated systems and no LP tools other than a DVR. The lower end products are still too over priced making it difficult to compete against major competitors.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Update systems in the stores and in the shoe-mobiles. Install electronic logs in the trucks that way managers can keep up with drivers and their drive time/work hours.

I worked at Red Wing Shoe part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

long days with paid lunch, air conditioning.

    Cons

Independent manager was always absent once I learned the ropes and could run the place myself, I was hired on as a part time employee, but worked full time hours and performed managerial responsibilities, I was promised raises and commission bonuses multiple times throughout my employment, and always ended up disappointed with my paycheck; I'm married and would sometimes notice that federal taxes were taken from my paychecks. I was always called in to work by my manager on my days off for the stupidest reasons, we opened at 9, he would call me in at 8:45 for something he had to do that afternoon, and would leave me to the store all day.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Perform more thorough checkups on your independent retailers, don't just asses how the shop is doing by what the manager says, interview the employees, there were only two of us.
