    Pros

Exposed me to many functions of the business. As a intern, this was very valuable.

    Cons

At times I got the work no ones else wanted. Although that's the nature of being an Intern, not so much about Redback.

    Pros

Redback has a recognized name in the telecom / data networking industry. An early pioneer and leader in the subscriber management space, still carries weight in having been associated with the company. Ericsson acquisition was a good thing overall for the broader company while there is still some near term reshuffling. Company is growing at a healthy clip in terms of staffing up and hiring, scaling the organization to meet Ericsson's plans, but it will mostly be a technology resource to feed the broader Ericsson machine. As a stand-alone entity, will have limited success in the marketplace selling point products.

    Cons

more political than usual for company size, different now with ericsson in the mix

    Advice to Management

    Be more open with communications

    Pros

The salaries are generally pretty high. Work roles and responsibilities are somewhat flexible; if you want to learn something new and you have time for it, nobody prevents you from digging into it. The patent program is rewarding. You can develop your skills here if you don't need much hand-holding.

    Cons

Management is very reactive and has a hard time doing anything new. The company does not encourage innovation except in some superficial ways. Managers do not understand the product very well and only a few are technical. Some groups are swamped in work while some groups are quite overstaffed. I've seen both sides.

    Advice to Management

Empower product groups to innovate, and also coordinate their actions. The sort of people that could innovate *despite* management are gone. Management now needs to put in some work to ensure that the product has a future. Do not assume that the "innovation" will happen spontaneously... you have to create the environment for it to grow.

    Pros

It's a very exciting time to be at Redback, since they were acquired by
Ericsson about 8 months ago. There are going to be lots of technical
opportunities and interesting work, at least in the short to medium term.

    Cons

The current management brought Redback to the brink of bankruptcy and
were then bailed out at the last minute by Ericsson, so they're still doing exactly
what they used to do, except they never really had to learn from their mistakes.

    Advice to Management

Make a clean sweep. Anyone who's been there for 3 years or more is probably
    part of the problem.
