I have been working at Reed Smith full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Top-notch talent in all practice groups and support departments produces great results for clients and provides a solid foundation for steady growth worldwide. The firm combines a progressive approach to OD, diversity/inclusion, pro bono work and technology (especially by law firm standards), with a long tradition of success. The culture can vary somewhat by office and by practice group, but just about everyone I've worked with -- from senior leadership to entry-level new hires -- lives and works by the firm's core values (respect, integrity, quality, performance & innovation) every day. I've found *very* few of the big egos and sharp elbows commonly associated with global "Biglaw" firms.

    Cons

Work-life balance can be a challenge: the road to recognition always includes long hours, late nights and weekends under deadline pressure. Leadership is strong and stable, but that leaves limited opportunities for advancement in many departments.

    Pros

Good pay, lots of work, and good pay. Some attorneys are very friendly.

    Cons

Most of the attorneys are very pretentious. Groups operate in silos and partners play favorites.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Actually have discussions with your attorneys and staff members. Communication and reward will help foster a better work environment.

    I worked at Reed Smith

    Pros

The staff at Reed Smith was extremely friendly. Everyone knew each other and there was a sense of community among the Business Center employees.

    Cons

The work that needed to be done was extremely tedious. It would take hours to do a request and lawyers would sometimes not be satisfied with a completed task that had no problems at all. The needs that the lawyers specified was not always what they wanted. Also, being an intern, we had to scan and manually type tons of documents. It would take needs. We were going out of our minds. If you want to work here, just make sure you are not going to make a career out of it.

I have been working at Reed Smith full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Great vacation policy and 401K plan; jobs are posted internally so there are good opportunities for advancement. Firm offers flexible work hours - depending on department needs. Firm has business casual dress code. Various bonus programs; spot awards ($50 gift cards when you go above and beyond); Employee of the quarter award.

    Cons

Promotion opportunities don't seem to be consistent across service departments - some departments seem to constantly create promotions while staff in other departments remain status quo.
