Lots of opportunity to grow and move within/across departments

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Region of Peel

ProsExcellent benefits. Great facilities. Corporate environment in terms of performance appraisals and incentives. Great access to learning and development training courses.

ConsDifficult to rise ranks if you are younger. There is a hierarchy that must be followed - a lot of people that have been there for a long time believe in "earn your stripes" and promote based on number of years of experience rather than merit.

The Region of Peel is a great learning environment, with many knowledgeable and helpful employees

Caseworker (Current Employee)
Brampton, ON (Canada)

I have been working at Region of Peel full-time for more than 3 years

ProsThe Region of Peel pays well and the benefits are good. There are opportunities for growth and development and they are an equal opportunity employer.

ConsWorking for the Region of Peel is very unpredictable in a bad way. Employees are constantly unsure of their job stability and there is never a moments peace. The people at the top makes decision without consulting the staff or realizing the impact on families when decisions are made.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake the time to connect with the Employees. Remember that at some point you were where we are. You cannot expect the same amount of staff that you had 20 years ago to service a growing population like Brampton in todays world. Clearly the need is there for the staff why have people on contract for years without a permanent position.

very pleasant and relaxed environment

Student Caseworker (Former Employee)
Mississauga, ON (Canada)

I worked at Region of Peel as a contractor for less than a year

ProsYou can do things at your own pace, no one is really checking up on you. Can take breaks when you want etc. nothing is timed. Everyone is pretty friendly. Most of the management are informal and laid back.

ConsWork can be stressful depending on the client load. You never know what to expect, every day is different (which is a good thing also). Have to deal with a lot of obnoxious clients.

Working for the organization was bitter-sweet

Business Analyst (Former Employee)
Brampton, ON (Canada)

I worked at Region of Peel

ProsThe jobs are secure for the most part, and because the organization is so diverse and offers a variety of services, there are options to move around if the opportunity presents itself.

ConsJudgements about whether you advance are often subjective and there is favouritism based on who you 'friend' and not necessarily on how well you perform. Policies are not followed consistently among staff or departments; application is usually subjective and if you are unfortunate enough to have a supervisor who is not familiar with your job duties, you are often at the mercy of their inadequacy.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe more mindful of who you advance to management. Managers at the very least should have as much 'job' knowledge as the staff the manage otherwise they can not evaluate the quality of the job that the staff member produces fairly or objectively.

Great place to work if you don't mind being content at your job. Environment kills any ambition a person may ever have.

Business Analyst (Current Employee)
Brampton, ON (Canada)

I have been working at Region of Peel

Pros-Benefits package is pretty good
-Government Pension Plan is pretty good
-Salary is decent
-No Stress at the job
-Telecommuting is available for most employees

Cons-No advancement unless your buddy-buddy with higher up's
-No bonus or performance incentives
-No parks (coffee, water coolers, etc)
-Factory like environment (punch in and punch out)

Advice to Senior Management-create an incentive program for your employees so that they won't become robots
-look internally to fill spots and if you do go externally, at least get bright people
-provide some basic perks like coffee, water coolers, PARKING SPOTS!!!!!!

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend
