I worked at Regis Corporation full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Flexible schedule - That's about it

    Cons

Goals are unrealistic, no regard for experience, ivory tower mentality, nonsensical beliefs and objectives.

    Advice to Management

Get in touch with the reality. Treat your employees fair - they work with your customers every day - your customers are not loyal to the name on the front of the building - they are loyal to the person doing their hair and will not tolerate poor execution or service - Sad to see what a mess you have made -

I have been working at Regis Corporation full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Busy Salon. My salon manager is great. I love my customers. My coworkers are cool.

    Cons

Pay is very low, Cant use floor mats due to lawsuit, can only use their Regis Brand hair products on back bar, Cheap continuing education classes. Nothing modern. Run down salon with crappy ceilings, floors, booths. Lights are always burnt out, flies everywhere. Matrix color is terrible, sinks are broken...Corporate needs to remodel our salon before other salons push us out because there is money to be made there.

    Advice to Management

To Corporate: Please stop treating us like infants

Company has potential, but doesn't invest enough in front-line employees

    Pros

Many salons will hire you with little experience, which is a great way to get into the cosmetology industry, because many private salons will not even give you a chance. For Smart Style salons, the walk-in traffic you have access to is wonderful for those who do not have an established clientele.

    Cons

The amount of pay you receive is laughable for an adult that has taken the time to go to school for a cosmetology license. The wage is hourly minimum wage or commission percentage of services, which ever is greater at the end of the pay period. Commission starts low at 38%. You do have the opportunity to earn more ( I received a 5% raise after meeting a particular amount of sales standards), but since many stores don't allow their employees to be true full-time employees (35-40 hrs), you still end up making a very low wage.

    Advice to Management

Pay stylists what they are worth. They are on the front lines directly facing your customers and without them, you wouldn't have a company. This would prevent the massive amount of turn over the company experiences, making for a much more stable business. The customers can sense the instability very well.

I worked at Regis Corporation full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Worked closely and made positive impact in my staff and vice versa.

    Cons

Corporate has little understanding of how field operations work. They expect fuels leadership to do hair AND "run" up to 8 managers. Read their recent "earnings call" transcripts and you'll realize they have little understanding how to deliver a best in class experience to anyone but their corporate salaries.

    Advice to Management

Get out of Illinois and the northern states when you do field research. Creating new positions for million dollar salary heads is NOT going to turn your earnings call in a new direction. You recently castrated your field leadership by expecting them to lead multiple units while maintaining the production standards if a high producing stylist. Very interesting concept since no one up in Edina has worked a single hour behind the chair much less know how to do hair. Yet you laid off all your non-technical field leadership. Hmmm, hypocrites maybe?

I worked at Regis Corporation part-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Employees out in the field do a great job and work so hard to be effective and offer great servicel! Love the enthusiasm and caring that they bring to work everyday.

    Cons

This used to be a company that cared about what it actually served. The success of Regis over the years has been built on holding the product and services delivered as absolutely paramount – ultimately by people that were connected to the end product and truly invested in delivering good service. Owner, executives and middle-management supported and nurtured this directive in a way that really brought it all together and it worked. Today, Regis is more about stock value…. without any value or attention paid to the core product. Getting people in the door will never improve until this is changed. Over the last three years the new board has stripped the fundamental core value of what made Regis a leader in this industry for decades. The fundamental base of knowledge and expertise that Regis once had regarding the core service of haircare and beauty is now greatly diminished. Which is not a surprise, since most all of the employees that truly understood (and cared about) the industry were fired or laid off. Regis' "new" strategy over the last 3 years had been to not only retrace former mistakes by delving into overly bloated executive salaries (check them out, they are public), it has moved in the direction of relying on executives that couldn't care less about the product served. Taking weeks to make a decision of any sort and ultimately bloating the middle-to-upper management structure even further.

    Advice to Management

Hire a few management professionals that actually know and care what good haircare is all about. Ditch the followers … in both upper and middle-management. Reward your stylists and employees out in the field – they are the ones that make the difference.

I have been working at Regis Corporation full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Insurance benefits, you pay some of it, if you work enough hours. Flexible with schedule.

    Cons

Cutting down on salon expenses. Hiring too many part time stylists. Have to share stations. Had 8 stylists when I started, now there's 16! Hires stylists without any knowledge of skills. Don't have cleaning crew anymore and salon looks dirty. They used to provide your tools, blow dryers, etc. Now you have to earn incentive points, which seem harder to get now. They want to focus on how many people you can get in and get out instead of focusing on your service sales. Don't get retail commission if your under $300 for the month. Just not fun anymore. Lacking teamwork. After more than 10 years I am looking for new salon to work at.

    Advice to Management

Treat stylists with more respect, fairness, and recognition. Top stylists are always the first to leave.

No say for the front line...

    Pros

Product and service discounts, great co workers, flexibility ...honestly, not much else.....I can't even write 20 words to fill this space.

    Cons

Company has gone through 3 restructures, poor decisions made by promoting non business educated or trained field staff. Company continuing to lose money on patch work while take more and more away from its hard working front line staff. There is no growth, just people leaving.

    Advice to Management

Focus on the Home Office staff and strengthen moral. Once this is fixed, this will trickle down to the salon level.

I have been working at Regis Corporation full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

If you are lucky enough to have a great manager/supervisor/boss, you have a real opportunity to succeed.. for a while -Marketing materials, Educational tools, business building all provided for you -Some salons are in great locations, making building a clientele easy. -Variety of products available for use. -Training on many, many techniques and products you would have to pay for elsewhere. -You really have all tools available at your disposal

    Cons

This company seems to allow, and promote, managers and supervisors into positions solely based on company tenure. -Low/Average pay for the work you are asked to do. -No "REAL" HR dept. Don't expect to be able to talk to anyone about legitimate concerns. (including racist/anti-gay comments made by upper mgt. You will be ignored.) -No communication across company. The left arm doesn't know what the right arm is doing. -Upper mgt is a joke. Told one thing, shown another, asked a third. -Expect to provide high end experience with low end capital. (Then, have NO IDEA why you are losing guests so quickly. Combine that with a crappy employee experience, which leads to a crappy guest experience, and you have no reason to stay.. as a guest or employee) -The company seems to have the right idea, with NO CLUE how to execute. Seriously, this company needs to pay more for better quality people, at least in field leadership. Having leadership that knows how to add and subtract may be a good start.

    Advice to Management

Pay closer attention to who your field teams are. Stop making emotionally charged decisions. A small bump in pay would help attract some better (SMARTER) employees. I really believe(d) in this company, until I saw who was being allowed to run the gamut.

I worked at Regis Corporation full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

There was once a mile long list of "pro's". The only one I can think of now, are some of the people who are still around.

    Cons

New CEO and board. Too much concentration on the money. The company lost what was great, the feeling of being a part of a family.

    Advice to Management

The people behind the chair are the money makers and yet they are treated the worst. They are overworked and under paid. You can't attract great talent, because they won't work for the pay or conditions offered. There is no incentive to do better or to stick around. It's sad. Regis was once a great company, now it's just a joke to most hairdressers.
