I have been working at Renton Technical College as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

When funding ran out for my position my boss found additional funding through another avenue for me. You don't get that everywhere !!! I believe he went beyond what is considered normal.

    Cons

Try as I might, I can't think of any right now.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Don't change anything right now.

I have been working at Renton Technical College part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Nice benefits and good compensation packages, if you manage to get hired for a FT position. The people are all wonderful to work with, and the students are great, as well!

    Cons

There's some slow turn-around in the HR department. Also, it's really hard to get a FT position here, which means you don't qualify for all the benefits that a Full-Timer gets.

I have been working at Renton Technical College part-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Both peers in instruction and administration are very supportive of each other. It is not a competitive atmosphere but one of helping improve instruction for overall campus retention.

    Cons

Office space and class space is limited for part-time instructors. If you teach 2 classes, you may be walking between two buildings or computer labs far apart or going pretty far to make a copy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There are some unused spaces that could be shared with others. Management could figure out a better way to use the space available for a more functional site.

    Pros

For the most part they have highly dedicated staff and a desire to serve the students who enroll there.

    Cons

Innovation and funding limited because of being a part of State governance

I have been working at Renton Technical College full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Intellectual freedom. Students provide a constant influx of "new" coworkers. Curriculum development is developed by the instructors so, it is easily adapted and updated. You can hide and get your work done with little interference.

    Cons

No raises unless the state government says so. They are rare. Management is too hands-off. Leadership is not very transparent. It is hard to know how and why things are done. The unions have no teeth and leadership lacks focus.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Cut programs before you cut staffing. Student service support is being restored (2013) but the burnout factor is high.

I worked at Renton Technical College

    Pros

It is very fulfilling to teach and rewarding. I worked with professional employees and it was an intellectual growth around such diversity of subjects taught.

    Cons

The only feedback recieved was from the students, which is only OK if you don't mind working without direct supervision and lead.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More communication and development of the staff.

I have been working at Renton Technical College full-time

    Pros

    Great mission
    Diverse student body
    Successful programs
    Excellent reputation
    Good potential
    Thoughtful leadership

    Cons

    Gossipy
    Parochial
    Understaffed in the wrong areas
    Poor communication
    No potential for career growth
    Lots of process / bureaucracy
    Tendency to micromanage

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change the middle management structure- deans & dean's assistants have too much control.

    Improve transparency & communication.

The right people are getting hired & the support for change is beginning to outweigh the people who like to complain.
