    Well respected company, but...

Mid-Level Management (Former Employee) Portland, OR

ProsCompany has a monopoly in Box Office receipts data and built a new biz about 10-12 years ago in measurement of cable VOD (video-on-demand) when no other entity was interested in pursuing. The company is also the industry leader in this area. Senior Mgmt has strong experience in media measurement and has tripled the company's stock price in the last few years, largely due to the success of the local TV ratings business that fills a void that Nielsen was slow to address. Employees can participate in the company's stock purchase program if they have the funds to do it. Teamwork amongst and between departments and lines of business is excellent.

ConsSince Senior Mgmt is totally focused on quarterly earnings, investment in technology and talent that could advance company performance and market share over the long run is really lacking. It often appears that organizational structures are changed to fit the skills of "friends" who have been hired, rather than organizing based on logic and strategy. The CEO is not located in HQ and doesn't know most employees, which wouldn't be difficult since it's a small company. The CEO often appears that he is only interested in flipping the company for his own enrichment. As other reviewers have mentioned, Portland HQ employees have good work life balance, but people in the field offices (largely sales) don't appear to have balance due to little staff, unrealistically high goals and often extremely long big-city commutes. Field employees complain that they are pushed beyond reason to exceed constantly changing goals and incentive plans. It's apparent to those of us in HQ who interface with customers that the company's meager investment in technology (more developers needed even when at budget level) affects sales' ability to meet customer expectations for rapid product advancements and therefore, opens up the door for lost business and customer complaints.

Advice to Senior ManagementThis company has a lot of potential, but could be on the verge of declining stock price and lost market share if all people don't feel motivated and rewarded, and if they aren't given the proper tools and resources to do the best job possible. Show every employee that they're important to the company's success. Improve communication that also seeks input from employees regarding strategy and internal processes that could be improved upon. We all want to win, not just make it so the CEO and his team are the exclusive winners.

You get to work with amazing people on a not so amazing product.

Database Administrator (Former Employee) Portland, OR

ProsThe people you get to work with at Rentrak are the best part of the company. It's almost expected to have people randomly come into your office and chat just to catch up. The engineering department is small enough to make friends with everyone.

You also start with three weeks of PTO, and a company holiday lasting 5-7 business days around the new year.

ConsPushing for changes to any product is pretty difficult. Rentrak has problems with scaling, and introducing new technologies to help with that is an uphill battle.

People on the DevOps team tend to work very long hours to keep the company up and running.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to your engineers for new ideas. You hire the best and the brightest, and it's a shame to waste their talents.

Lots of potential but it depends on the department

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Portland, OR

ProsOverall there are many smart people. And may of them do work more collaboratively than competitively. There are some movie ticket perks. Good vacation

ConsSome middle managers are just not good. You will see the high turnover from those departments.

    – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Needs to come into the 21st century in technology, culture and progressive thinking

IT Staff (Current Employee) Portland, OR

ProsLots of paid time off and vacation. Tons of free food on a weekly basis ( blessing or curse, not sure yet).

ConsCulture is really off, i could go on about it forever. In a nutshell; Very backwards and old school thinking, not very progressive. Most all of the upper mgt and vp's are extremely unfriendly. CEO will not talk or acknowledge you if you are a new employee. Overly tight with $$ on so many levels where they NEED it, but when it comes to unncessary spending to get some dev's and new IT kids in they will spend STUPID amounts of money! Not a very "Portlandish" company or atmosphere you would expect. They are stuck back in the late 80's early 90's.

Growing company with a changing, evolving culture

Information Technology (Current Employee) Portland, OR

ProsGenerous time off, fair salaries, some very good managers. Company is trying to adopt new ideas like opening a downtown office.

ConsSeveral departments with very high turnover. Management doesn't care about addressing obvious bad managers.

Advice to Senior ManagementExecutives (CEO, COO) should spend more time in the office, talking to employees and learning what is really going on.

Unique Company, Awesome stepping stone to starting a career.

Quality Assurance (Current Employee) Portland, OR

ProsGenerous PTO and holiday time off. Game rooms, Movie passes, and in company movie rentals. Lunch brought in, Company sponsored teams for Hood to Coast, annual golf game. Lots of growth and opportunities. Friendly Peers. Casual environment.

ConsCompensation could be a little better, unless you are a favorite it can be hard to receive recognition for going above and beyond (extra tasks, extra hours, volunteering projects ect..)

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't play favorites. There is a lot of hidden talent among you that you may not be giving enough attention to.

The company is taking important strides to stay competitive.

Software Engineer (Current Employee) Portland, OR

ProsThere is some loyalty to the careers of the majority of workers. Free movies, game-rooms, and free professional sports tickets are nice perks.

ConsThe location of the office hurts the circulation of best software practices.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe company's executives should build more balanced software teams with focused strategies.
