An excellent place to work, especially for Software Engineering

I worked at Rentrak full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Rentrak is a great place to work. You work on interesting problems with cool data and awesome people. Management treats employees with respect. Even C level officers are happy to make time to discuss ideas and projects with engineers.

The work environment is fantastic, with great fringe benefits. The people are amazing; the whole of IT has brilliant people who are also very friendly and willing to help. Excellent work life balance. Good perks for Senior Engineers and higher.

Senior management has done an excellent job moving the company with the market and anticipating where business needs to go.

    Cons

Salary and benefits are only adequate, though they've both been improving lately. 401(k) is OK. 3 weeks of PTO (to start) includes your sick time. Medical was slightly below what I'd expect.

There's a fair amount of issues related to being a rapidly growing company. Expanding bureaucracy and change issues. While those are annoying, they are at least being addressed by management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You hire top notch people, spend the money and resources to keep them.

Work harder towards making systems that should be legacy into actual legacy systems. Software Development is dramatically slowed by the mountain of legacy code. Longer term strategic development in engineering would really pay dividends.

Try to streamline the bureaucracy a bit.

I have been working at Rentrak as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Great Company interesting problems great work environment employees have lives and are no just bound to work. I really like it, I can't say much for the culture at the NY office but Portland is great. I am an intern and being able to ask the dumb questions is a big deal for me, the people there are a great help and always down to help me. I think the people their are some of the most friendly people to work with. Would recommend this company to my friends in a heartbeat.

    Cons

I don't really see any sort of cons to working at Rentrak I really enjoy the work-life balance and just about everything I think there is a lot of room for personal growth at Rentrak. You should take everything I say with a grain of salt though I am just an intern and perhaps haven't seen all there is it see.

A lot of potential if New York can build bridges to Portland

I have been working at Rentrak full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Talented and friendly people in the ranks

Good access to leadership in many groups

Potential to work with Big Data

Three weeks of PTO plus winter holiday week

    Cons

Over-emphasis on needs of high-level executives while skimping on simple needs of most employees (high-value engineers are the exception):
    - Fairly poor benefits outside of Portland; other offices do not have anywhere near the same perks
    - Lack of flexible workplace policy (flex time; work-from-home)

Company struggling to keep up with its own growth

Technology outdated and skimpy, from infrastructure to databases

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Too much focus on sales and the stock price undermines the foundational work that the non-executives pound out. Find a way to share your vision and inspire those of us without executive compensation and perquisites. Bridge the gap between sales and the rest of the company, between executives and everyone else, and between New York and elsewhere. It's a decent company with a good legacy. You have the chance to make it a great company if you care.

Big Improvements in last couple years

I have been working at Rentrak full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

There are plenty of interesting problems to work on. While it will depend on the department, the company is interested in updating its substantial amount of legacy code to use new technologies. There are many talented people working here, and the management of the technology department is very open to input from the rank and file. The atmosphere is very collegial, with an emphasis on collaboration and spreading knowledge. In 2012 I was considering quitting due to problems with IT management, but since then there has been a big turnaround that has made all the difference for my quality of life at work.

    Cons

Sometimes sales is overzealous and sells a feature without consulting the engineering department, resulting in a sudden shift in priorities and compromises on the design quality and/or work/life balance. The CEO is a sales guy who often comes across as tone-deaf to the concerns of the rank-and-file.

    Pros

Good people, flexible work schedule (working from home), company means well and wants to do good. Its best years lie ahead if it can decide what it wants to be.

    Cons

There is no focus on or definition of key strengths. Management is unwilling to push back on unrealistic client demands. Little communication of real value from senior management. With their compensation overly tied solely to stock price, management has short-term mind set and and obsessive focus on stock price.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen and learn, and decide finally what you want to bring to market. Stop blaming others for core shortcomings.

    Well respected company, but...

Former Employee - Mid-Level Management in Portland, OR
Former Employee - Mid-Level Management in Portland, OR

I worked at Rentrak full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Company has a monopoly in Box Office receipts data and built a new biz about 10-12 years ago in measurement of cable VOD (video-on-demand) when no other entity was interested in pursuing. The company is also the industry leader in this area. Senior Mgmt has strong experience in media measurement and has tripled the company's stock price in the last few years, largely due to the success of the local TV ratings business that fills a void that Nielsen was slow to address. Employees can participate in the company's stock purchase program if they have the funds to do it. Teamwork amongst and between departments and lines of business is excellent.

    Cons

Since Senior Mgmt is totally focused on quarterly earnings, investment in technology and talent that could advance company performance and market share over the long run is really lacking. It often appears that organizational structures are changed to fit the skills of "friends" who have been hired, rather than organizing based on logic and strategy. The CEO is not located in HQ and doesn't know most employees, which wouldn't be difficult since it's a small company. The CEO often appears that he is only interested in flipping the company for his own enrichment. As other reviewers have mentioned, Portland HQ employees have good work life balance, but people in the field offices (largely sales) don't appear to have balance due to little staff, unrealistically high goals and often extremely long big-city commutes. Field employees complain that they are pushed beyond reason to exceed constantly changing goals and incentive plans. It's apparent to those of us in HQ who interface with customers that the company's meager investment in technology (more developers needed even when at budget level) affects sales' ability to meet customer expectations for rapid product advancements and therefore, opens up the door for lost business and customer complaints.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

This company has a lot of potential, but could be on the verge of declining stock price and lost market share if all people don't feel motivated and rewarded, and if they aren't given the proper tools and resources to do the best job possible. Show every employee that they're important to the company's success. Improve communication that also seeks input from employees regarding strategy and internal processes that could be improved upon. We all want to win, not just make it so the CEO and his team are the exclusive winners.

I worked at Rentrak full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The people you get to work with at Rentrak are the best part of the company. It's almost expected to have people randomly come into your office and chat just to catch up. The engineering department is small enough to make friends with everyone.

You also start with three weeks of PTO, and a company holiday lasting 5-7 business days around the new year.

    Cons

Pushing for changes to any product is pretty difficult. Rentrak has problems with scaling, and introducing new technologies to help with that is an uphill battle.

People on the DevOps team tend to work very long hours to keep the company up and running.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your engineers for new ideas. You hire the best and the brightest, and it's a shame to waste their talents.

    Pros

Overall there are many smart people. And may of them do work more collaboratively than competitively. There are some movie ticket perks. Good vacation

    Cons

Some middle managers are just not good. You will see the high turnover from those departments.

    Pros

Lots of paid time off and vacation. Tons of free food on a weekly basis ( blessing or curse, not sure yet).

    Cons

Culture is really off, i could go on about it forever. In a nutshell; Very backwards and old school thinking, not very progressive. Most all of the upper mgt and vp's are extremely unfriendly. CEO will not talk or acknowledge you if you are a new employee. Overly tight with $$ on so many levels where they NEED it, but when it comes to unncessary spending to get some dev's and new IT kids in they will spend STUPID amounts of money! Not a very "Portlandish" company or atmosphere you would expect. They are stuck back in the late 80's early 90's.

    Pros

Generous time off, fair salaries, some very good managers. Company is trying to adopt new ideas like opening a downtown office.

    Cons

Several departments with very high turnover. Management doesn't care about addressing obvious bad managers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Executives (CEO, COO) should spend more time in the office, talking to employees and learning what is really going on.
