I have been working at Republic Services full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Can be fun work, good co workers, good work schedules (for the most part)

    Cons

Terrible direct manager. I have engaged direct manager and his manager multiple times with no success. A few bad apples makes this a difficult place to work at.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of terrible lower management! Unless there is a management change up, I would not recommend this employer.

I have been working at Republic Services full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Benefits, especially the 401k match and vision and dental are better than a lot of companies.

    Cons

It's still an "ole boys" club and a lot of nepotism.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you have employees who want to learn more, be more, and advance. Help them out instead of saying "we'll see", otherwise the employee will become work drones that have lost the passion.

I have been working at Republic Services full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The pay plan is OK, enough to attract good managers. The local people are really top notch.

    Cons

Constant turnover; even at senior levels. Bullying from the very top of the company permeates down to the division level, setting a culture of what is called "accountability". Sales Managers become the equivalent of kindergarten teachers, enforcing silly rules to protect themselves at meetings to explain why sales aren't growing at the expected rate. Customer satisfaction is secondary to sales statistics such as FRF and ERF participation rates, which add as much as a third to the monthly service bill. Over the past four years, I have been asked three times to "turn on the fees" to customers that negotiated no fees on their contract. The strategy is to apply 20+% FRF and 10% ERF to these customers without warning and see who catches it. It is common to hit customers with 15-17% price increases every year on top of the fees (also without notification). If the customer balks and tries to "quit"; we are instructed to hold them to the letter of the contract or if no valid contract exists, implement a "save at all costs" strategy; a slash and burn tactic to ruin the profitability of the competitor. There is a wannabe tough guy attitude at the very top of the company. We see in the annual recording of the GM conference his idle threatening statements like "do it our way or go someplace else" management style. Many, many people choose the latter as it turns out. From a management perspective, HR is a joke. The tough guy attitude continues down through all levels of HR, who are entitled to be judge, jury and executioner on the many HR issues that occur in this bullying environment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Scale back the tough guy routine and you will have happier employees and more effective managers. The way we treat our customers is inexcusable and is the reason the company continues to shrink even after "synergy" from the merger was completed. People want to do a good job; you do a good job in recruiting the right people, so let them do their thing.

    Pros

Paycheck deposited regularly and essp is ok....just ok

    Cons

Senior leadership resembled feces throwing gorillas in nice suits. But if you like to engage in monosyllabic dialogue with greedy, valueless clownish thugs, then call this place home. Otherwise avoid at all costs this poisonous environment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Resign.

I worked at Republic Services full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

working directly with clients internally and externally

    Cons

The company lacks communication entirely, this is why a majority of customers leave as well, no one is on the same page. There is no room for growth unless you have a degree (knowledge base or experience doesn't count) or are friends or family of someone already in management They pay very poorly and the average increase yearly is around $.16 if you are even given one. You are micro-managed at all times and in all honesty the office atmosphere is that of a kindergarten class. Everyone blames each other for problems (including management) instead of working together to fix issues. If you enjoy gossip, this is definitely the place for you. And don't forget being talked down to by management as if you are a child being punished. Respect is not a factor here. All in all, the Salt Lake City office is summed up as a HUGE stress and has the ability to break a person down both physically and mentally.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communicate with your employees. Treat them with respect, they are not your children, they are your peers. Without a dedicated team you have nothing. A team drives a company or department to success, not your title and ego. Try putting yourself in your employees shoes, would like like to be degraded? I don't think so.

I worked at Republic Services full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

    The pay was above average

    Cons

You basically apologized all day for the drivers missing pickups, the phone would not stop ringing with people complaining about how bad this service was. Also billing questions about why their bill would go up by 25% 9 months after signing a 3 year contract. It's total extortion as they try to hold you to the contract. It appears that organized crime hasn't gotten to far away from the garbage business. Horrible work environment in an office for 10+ hours a day, too hot and then too cold. Not very friendly employees and the training is horrible. You will spend weeks doing online training and then 3 days in phoenix only to realize that everything you were taught was completely useless when it came to the performance of the company and it's operations staff. Way to paperwork heavy too. Still manually filling out forms and trying to figure out the right codes. You will get buried in paperwork.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

change your "on-boarding" program to reflect more of the realistic day to day activities of the Account Manager. Hire sales managers that will actually help train people instead of walking around the office all day and socializing and trying to be the funny guy. You better be a good butt kisser or you are on the outside looking in.

    Pros

Competitive salary, medical benefits, 401K, PTO, and two weeks paid vacation from the moment you complete your 60 day probation.

    Cons

In my opinion Republic Services is grossly understaffed. I have noticed a high rate of turn-around. Opportunity for advancement is almost non-existent. To say working for this company is stressful would be an understatement. Daily duties, call monitoring and productivity grading are mentally exhausting. Employment with this company will and does drain the life out of you.
