Pros
Good benefits for this type of firm
Pay is decent; OT at 1.5 for over 40 hrs. is good (if client allows it)
Consultants are W-2 employees, so it is possible to get unemployment benefits when on bench
Diverse assignments present a great opportunity to add to skill set.
Pleasant, accomplished professional people to work with.
Excellent place to work for semi-retired folks who just want to stay busy or keep their skills sharp.
Cons
Minimum amount of communication with management when on assignment -- no real support in difficult client situations
Client Service personnel often don't understand accounting/finance
A good process does not exist for placing consultants when an assignment ends -- seems pretty haphazard
Depending on the business environment and your particular skill set, you may spend a lot of time on the bench.
Advice to Senior Management
Client development personnel should thoroughly understand the services they are selling.
Communicate more with consultants when they are on assignment and develop a better process for assigning consultants to new projects.
Pros
Personal, respectful interaction with management. Generous benefits for project work. You are part of a team.
Cons
Management needs a deeper, broader pipeline which comes with time.
Pros
Creative, smart - solid people.
Unlimited opportunities to network internally to find the help you need
People are willing to help you
People are interested in one another
Cons
The lack of formal programs, such as performance review & development initiatives, can be frustrating at times.
Advice to Senior Management
Be more open to new ideas & programs. Even if "it" isn't the best fit, try it and we will all learn something.
Pros
Benefits are decent. Continue to be fully paid for 2 months while on bench.
Potential to see other corporate environments.
Cons
There are cleary many more consultants on the bench than on assignments.
Shocking amount of mark-up. Saw billing to client, who was charged 250% of what I was paid.
Assignments often seem to be in very troubled, crisis-filled areas with difficult people and situations.
Consultants are viewed as money-maker to company, but there is no support or loyalty to contractors and absolutely no communication or support when you are on the bench.
Have been pushed into assignments that really weren't good fits with interests/skills, but they talked it up and I had been on the bench so long, I took it knowing it would not be a pleasant experience.
Often have long meetings with management that are not billable and are waste of time. They are trying to glean new leads for clients.
Limited contact during assignments. Feel out there on your own.
Advice to Senior Management
Change your culture so that consultants are made to feel part of a supportive environment and not just a commodity. If in the position to hire a consultant, I would never look to RGP based on their model and their mark-up.
Pros
Good clients and projects. Not a business heavily into process, so allows flexibility in approach. As a consultant they are as good as their projects and the client service director you get
Cons
As the market moved, shifted from a professional service approach to one of an agency. They used to keep consultants busy but now pick them up and drop them as projects come and go. Low levels of projects makes it difficult to roll from one project to another so loyalty has dropped.
Advice to Senior Management
Realize that the current (low) volume is driven by the lack of value added in the service and the high prices charged. Shift one or both.
Pros
It's good for those who like chanllenging opportunities
Cons
do not get paid if you are on the bench.
Pros
Public company
Small teams
Regional accountability
Decent pay
Cons
- Very political
- Company doesn't understand its own market segment (think it's a big4 alternative, but it's really a Robert Half alternative
- Very expensive - demanding a x2.2 mark up on consultant cost with a 43% GP margin target - that is super expensive, uncompetitive and unheard of in the staffing industry
- No methodology - i.e. "Consulting Projects" are really "Staff Augmentation contracts"
- Decline in stock value is an indicator that folks are catching on
- Company is led by Accountants, not Recruiting professionals as it should be
Advice to Senior Management
Time to grow up and stop playing around. Quit hiring Auditors and Accountants to lead the business. The model only attracts burned out financial professionals who are looking for short term projects and to sit around on the bench in between fulltime employment roles.
Pros
Well respected companies
Decent salary time and half over 40 hours a week
Cons
VERY political environmet between RGP senior management and consultants. I choose consulting to get away from the politics
Some immature consultants. Examples, making fun of client employees
Managing Director did not make an effort to learn what was actually going on at client.
Advice to Senior Management
Make an effort to understand the project to a certain degree. Don't count on the "favorite" consultant to give you the truth when they are stabbing you in the back.
Pros
Great pay, great clients, outstanding consultants
Cons
Management has a really bad culture and it starts at the top. Management is extremely clich-y and backstabbing, and thinks nothing of lying to their employees and their clients.
Advice to Senior Management
Get rid of your entrenched management and start over. Get a vision for your company other than being an expensive version of Robert Half.
Pros
Flexibility, fairly treated, good benefits for this type of work
Cons
Some projects are not the best
Advice to Senior Management
Need to raise company profile to better compete
