Advice to Senior Management
Great job! I love working for Resources Global Professionals, I don't love the down time. Could you provide some limited pay opportunities during times on the bench? I just want to stay busy!
Pros
For Consultants, it is a decent place to get projects if you want flexibility between projects or you are looking for a short term project. If you have a CSD who is your advocate, it can be a place you can move from project to project, but it depends on the demand for your skill set at the time you are rolling off a project.
Internal Management is ok depending on what you are looking for. Employee's are typically very nice to work with and supportive. If you just want a job that you want to balance with family life, it isn't bad - but that balance isn't what it used to be in this economy.
Cons
Consultants who have skill sets that are not in demand at the moment they are rolling from a project will be sitting on the bench. Be prepared to have down time and in the interview make sure you scope out your skills against general demand with your interviewer to get a good understanding of how busy they can keep you. Set expectations accordingly.
Internally, the value proposition has changed in the last 5 years. It used to be a place where new ideas could be tried and there was a good work/life balance. Now it is more top down micromanagement as the economy has gone down. Compensation is average with almost no movement after you join and bonus' are not transparent, not tied to performance and rewarded to favorites. There is little room for a career path.
Advice to Senior Management
Internal Management was good when it was a small start-up environment but the "original management" from the early years don't have the skill sets to take company to the next level. There was a chance for change with a new CEO but people were fearful of being held accountable (as people are not currently.) You can't keep driving the company with the "strategic" catch phrases that worked 15 years ago - the business environment has changed. Take a deep look and come up with a strategy that is relevant to today's market and can actually move the company to the next level. The culture which was unique and interesting has evaporated and now is just something people cheer-lead with nothing to back it up. Care about your people again in a meaningful way and it is possible you can get some of it back.
Pros
Solid leadership and great attitudes are very positive
Cons
Down time between appts can be a bummer unless occupied with other projects
Advice to Senior Management
Maximize training modalities
Pros
Internal management bonus and salary is good when compare to work-life and sometimes on the upper end. If you are a consultant, compensation is limiting given downtime which can be high. If you are senior management, compensation is excellent when bonus, options and work life is considered.
Think they do a good job at painting the picture of downtime but when you are looking for work you tend to overlook.
Cons
Market has changed, company has lost almost half their revenue from their high of around 900million so consultants should be prepared for downtime. Senior Management and Management at office levels for the most part are removed from the pressures of consulting so they dont really provide any guidance or support in terms of subject matter or industry point of view. Company lacks substantive training and development of their staff and have cut back on expenses to re-tool staff. Lots of retention issue over the past couple of years at the internal and consultant level.
Pros
Positive experience appears to be the norm
Cons
Benchtime can be longer than desired
Advice to Senior Management
Better transition between assignments needed
Pros
The pitch sounded like it would be a great environment, the facts turned out to be otherwise.
Cons
They lure you in with talk of being a consultant when in actuality this is basically a temporary staffing firm as many others have stated. Very poor communication from management and their own level of understanding of assignments is abysmal. Basically a joke of a company in my opinion.
Advice to Senior Management
Be more professional and honest with prospects and just explain that you are a temporary staffing agency not a consultancy under any stretch of the definition.
Pros
Flexible employment, blue chip clients. Range of assignments and opportunity to work in other locations internationally. Respectable pay if up-time remains high.
Cons
Pretending to be consultants when they are only filling operational roles. Poor client - consultant communication. Only interested in maintaining client relationship - don't expect support if things get difficult. Pay does not reflect consulting - so downtime will eat into overall earnings.
Don't expect them to bring any intellectual capital or methodology to the table - its all you.
Advice to Senior Management
Be honest about the value proposition. You offer experienced workers - not consultants. This is reflected in the level of assignments on offer.
Pros
Clearly the smartest group of people I have worked with. Superior consultants consistent from city to city. Fairly flat organization. Smaller markets really allow for an entrepreneurial approach. Very good business model.
Cons
It's better to work as a consultant than internally. No carrer path unless you want to be a MD. Compensation is always understated unless you are part of the leadership team. Bonus calculations are inconsistent and know as a well kept mystery within the company. Growing pains are becoming more apparent and calls into question if the leaders that started the company can take it to the next level.
Pros
Flexible work schedules, abilitiy to pick and choose assignments, employee benefit package is fair and compensation is generally based upon market conditions
Cons
No longer term assignments are available, no chance of stringing together consecutive assignments, is not a full-time employer, no career development or advancement
Advice to Senior Management
Focus on business development in order to bring in more clients with broader assignments so that consultants can have a career path
Pros
Great work life balance. Opportunity to work directly with senior management.
Cons
Bench/down time between clients can be lengthily.
