    Great potential but too disorganized

    Product Consultant (Current Employee)
    Chicago, IL

ProsBenefits and salary are great. You get to work interact with some great clients and learn a lot about email marketing from a market leader.

ConsManagement is still trying to find its way and is disorganized. The company still has a lot of growing up to do. Lack of career development.

Advice to Senior ManagementSince the company is so spread out and global, management needs to do a better job of providing a successful work environment for all types of employees.

Good work-life balance, slow pace, not much personal growth

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsThe company is doing great, and takes care of employees, or at least trying to.

ConsBureaucracy. It's a mid-size company but operates like a big company with all levels of hierarchy in place.

Good start but move on after a couple years

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

    Pros- Young, fun team.
    - Good office location
    - Snacks/drinks
    - Flexibility to work from home
    - Okay benefits
    - Good work/life balance (but it depends on the team you're on)
    - Trusted to do your job

    Cons- No discussions from manager
    - Managers separated themselves from the people they manage
    - No career path discussions
    - Below Average pay
    - Raises are hard to come by

Responsys is a good company to get your foot in the door into the email marketing industry. After a couple years of experience you will be able to find a better job with higher compensation elsewhere.

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't substitute an employee's supervisor (one who discusses their career path/ compensation/ issues etc.) with a "lead" who has no authority to do anything.

    Growing Fast

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsGood people, great product, lots of growth with exciting, fast moving company.

ConsGrowing too fast at times, can't keep up with work demand. Many folks taxed causing some low moral.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep investing in human capital to ensure there is no burnout.

Good work environment but in need of clear routes for professional growth.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Hayward, CA

    Pros- Lax work environment.
    - Most coworkers are friendly.
    - Benefits are okay.
    - Most management is respectful.
    - Some flexibility with work times.

    Cons- Lack of recognition.
    - There is a lot of hype about how the company is successful and extremely profitable, but it seems that there aren't too many raises.
    - Often times long hours.
    - Often times work is mundane.
    - Sometimes you'll see some workers try to pull "power trips," but that can be anywhere.

Advice to Senior Management- Create transparent means of obtaining raises.
    - Be flexible with work habits (i.e. working from home etc...)
    - Allow employees to draw a line between work and life.
    - Management should follow the 3M company model to spur innovation.

Responsys is not perfect, but I've never worked anywhere that is.

    Sales (Former Employee)
    San Bruno, CA

ProsResponsys has built the most experienced and competent sales team in the email space. The team wants to win and they did. There is a compelling vision that management has laid out but to date they have been unable to execute against that vision. The email marketing space is growing very fast, and this provides opportunities for the people and the company to be very successful if they could execute their vision and keep their top people. I liked the people on my team and we worked hard together. The management team is pretty open to feedback and suggestions, and we used that fact to create a far more open culture at the company than was there previously.

ConsLack of emotional intelligence of the senior management team.
Senior sales management has a negative communication style in email particularly, that leaves members of the sales team wishing they would leave the people management to those on the sales management team who are effective at it.
Product management needs to get their act together. They have consistently under-delivered.

Advice to Senior ManagementLet your managers manage and think about the company as what it is, i.e. a collection of individuals with different needs and motivations, rather than as a "company" that somehow could succeed divorced from the people who comprise it.

Management by anything other than data is a waste of everyone's time. Use it to set reasonable expectations for your employees and your board, and realize that you are competing against every other interactive marketing company out there for talent. The talent has the upper hand in your space. Embrace it.
