    Pros

Responsys is always hiring, so if you need a job, you may find one here. They have been able to beat the recession with tremendous growth during a downturn. Responsys is especially interested in hiring young, recent college grads, who are willing to learn in exchange for lower wages.

    Cons

Responsys has taken advantage of the recession by under-appreciating its employees. Despite the recession, turnover is high because so many people want to leave. 60 hour work weeks are typical. Some of my coworkers left for contractor positions they were so dissatisfied with the environment, which is extremely negative.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management (at the vice president level) should take responsibility for failures -- and not blame middle managers or employees. Constant negative feedback is what has inspired many great employees to seek work elsewhere, even in the midst of a tough economy.

    Pros

    Business space
    Company growth
    Colleagues
    Customer successes
    Saas model

    Cons

Engineers feel like 2nd class citizens.
People under promise, and only do what is asked of them. Risky otherwise
    Work happens in silos.
Eng management is never accountable for bad plans and results. Seems like only engineers get blame.
Some teams are treated better than others.
    Lack of caring for employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide an environment where engineers can create and deliver an awesome product
    Treat employees fairly
    Offer possibilities of advancement
    Provide clear metrics for success
    Celebrate successes .
Be consistent with processes and values
Admit mistakes so we can learn from them

I have been working at Responsys

    Pros

sales and marketing is very strong. one of the very few companies in the bay area to be recession-proof. good overall potential.

    Cons

the organizational structure in development part of the company seems bureaucratic given the size of the company. Responsys is still a startup yet there are managers who only manage one employee and majority of the managers have 2-3 direct reports.

    work from home not allowed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

hire management consultants to look at the way organization is structured.

    Management problems.

    I worked at Responsys

    Pros

Compensation (if negotiated) and work environment.

    Cons

    Extremely irrational front line management.

Marketing is overselling what the next version of the product can do (too high of a learning curve for marketing customers) (too many limiting features) (too many bugs)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn how to actually manage people. Treat employees as well as customers (is that too much acting for you all in one day?). Have an objective standardized review process with real numbers showing both positive and negative performance outcomes.

    I worked at Responsys

    Pros

Responsys is the current leader in their space and has a solid product to go to market with. They have a strong customer base and the market is growing rapidly. The pace is steady, but not overly burdensome and you have the opportunity to work with some phenomenal clients. The development is attempting to move to the cutting edge and if they succeed, it could be a great place to work.
The people that you will work with here are absolutely top notch.

    Cons

Did not receive an annual Cost of Living Adjustment and the review process is undefined. Movement within the organization is not common and the opportunity for career growth is virtually non-existent. They tend not to want to extend salaries for promotions when they actually do increase responsibilities. In addition, they don't seem to treat their employees with all that much respect, which is sad because they've actually been able to attract some great talent to that organization.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat your employees better and with more respect.

    Pros

Great environment and the people are all knowledgeable and dedicated. There is a definite culture of helping the client succeed. Great place to be pre-Oracle. CEO was approachable and seemed to genuinely care about employee satisfaction.

    Cons

Full service staff are poorly compensated for the area, and advancement opportunities have been nonexistent for almost 2 years now. This causes high turnover in the most client facing positions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Middle management need people management training. While product knowledge is phenomenal, they have no idea how to manage people. Morale is a direct reflection of management, who are either absent(senior) or ineffectual (middle).

    Pros

A good place for someone starting in the online marketing industry.

    Cons

At the time I worked there - the vision of the company was distracted by an inevitable acquisition. Hopefully, management will get more organized. The culture encourages omnipresence vs. balance.

    Pros

Downtown SF location is perfect, and Responsys really knows how to hire nice, hard-working and innovative people. For the most part, the team I work with is awesome. Good benefits, that continue to get even better.

    Cons

Compensation leaves something to be desired. Salaries really need to be well negotiated up front, because any raises after initial hiring will be the bare minimum. Some promotions are in "title only". Responsys is a growing company, and hires a lot of senior level people, which can leave its current employees feeling passed over. Work/Life balance can be out of whack, and salaried employees who consistently work more than 40 hours per week, are not always acknowledged for their hard work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the good work on growing a great company, but don't forget about your longtime employees.
