Pros
I worked in a department that was flexible. I was able to handle anything that popped up in my home life when I needed to, but most of the other departments are not ran that way. I also did not have much work, so I did have time to pursue other opportunities. Again, that was special though. Lastly, my coworkers were amazing. Great people who simply are either stuck or who have settled.
Cons
The company does not appreciate its employees at all. I worked with amazing individuals and we were all underpaid by 25% or more comparably to similar companies. It was a very depressing work environment as it became obvious that we were all simply human resources to be used and discarded at will.
Advice to Senior Management
Sneaky paycuts like $500 raises but $1000 insurance premium increases is the most demoralizing practice ever. Also, working from home is not slacking off. Some of the positions would be perfect for it and you should give it a try. If nothing else, your employees could at least save a little gas. Lastly, if you actually want to keep the best, you should at least pay as much as ADP.
Pros
That place is one of the worst places I've ever worked at. The compensation is low, the benefits are poor and the leaders are all in it for themselves. I worked there for 3 years. The way they keep you is by making you comfortable and so complacent to the point it's hard to look for another job because you've made friends and you have a routine. While being there, the restrictions of what you could not do continued to grow. While I don't smoke, you can't smoke, they eliminated sugar from the cafeteria and the vending machine. Next their going to raise the rates on medical benefits if you're over a certain BMI or if you have a high cholesterol. While, I could understand that if they were paying for the benefits and they were free to employees, but they're not! When I was there, our only Christmas "bonus" was a Christmas party. Well, they took that away as well. There are no incentives to working there!
Cons
Diverse group of people. Good to put on a resume and get experience.
Pros
Requires no experience, only promote from within so you can grow with the company, fun events, intramural sports, some really great people to work with.
Cons
Intro vacation time is insufficient, very conservative and watches timestamps closely, the location is undesirable out at hollister and 290.
Advice to Senior Management
Trust your employees more, pay somewhat higher, do not require doctor's notes for sick days, be less strict in general.
Pros
Great team atmosphere
In house workout facility
Praise when it is deserved
Offers to stay on full time after internship is completed
Cons
It is a big company
There are dips in the work load
The supervisors are not technical
Expectations are not very clear
Advice to Senior Management
Work more with your employees. The higher ups are rarely seen except for at pit stops. I know you are all busy, but I think it would be nice.
Pros
They do have a 401K with matching up to 6%. Depending on your role there are certain "benefits" such as a cell phone laptop etc
Cons
The senior management will take advantage of their employees any way that they can to improve their bottom line. They do not care if we have to work 70+ hours a week and then they will implement programs that require those kind of hours. Overall they need to treat their people much much better
Advice to Senior Management
Listen to your people. I love the people I work with, my customers, the industry however I cannot stand the policies that are put into place. If you would like to keep your people and have less turn over make it a better place to work.
Pros
It's a non-smoking facility, so NOBODY smokes. Flexible with scheduling, no micro-managing. Strong 401K plan, good benefits, lots of company sports leagues and sponsored events. One of the largest privately owned companies in the US
Cons
Coming from years in the corporate world in a different industry, it's unfortunate that many of the new hires are straight out of college and have no basis for comparison when criticizing the company. Many of the complaints I hear are about things that are just part of the corporate world no matter where you go. I hear complaints about starting pay, but they will train you from the ground up and there are significant opportunities for advancement or lateral movement within the company
Pros
Nice facility, but that is about it.
Cons
Upper Management and the owner are incompetent. They care more about inflicting their will and beliefs on their employees than servicing customers or making money. Oh I left out they constant monitoring of every move you make. It is just insanity.
Advice to Senior Management
Sell the company and go back to whatever insane asylum you escaped from. The fact that Arkona has a picture of Bob Brockman hanging on the wall with a caption that reads "Salesman of the Month" should speak louder than anything I can write.
Pros
People, Brand of Old and Thats It!
Cons
Pay, New products are old to Industry, Control of Pricing, Control of Anything, Customers View of Company,
Advice to Senior Management
If you want Loyalty, Show Loyalty. If you want Respect, Show Respect!
Pros
Provides good training
Recognition from upper management
Cons
Low base salary
Have to wait for a while for promotion
Have to stay quite some time with the company to get to normal salary range
Pros
Easily and quickly hiring. If you can hack the aptitude test, some cant, you will get hired after several interviews, 5 or 6 for me. It pays well enough to get by comfortably if your used to "working" by which I mean going indoors to a fluorescent-lit cube farm for 8 hours a day. The work itself is not hard, but very much like Office Space. The company is aware of this and ok with it, which is fine given their industry. Contrary to the recruiting rhetoric this is a job designed for students waiting to find a better job or waiting for girl/boyfriends or fiancées to graduate from school and it works.
Cons
No benefits for 4 months, including sick days. If you do want time off you can take it unpaid. They ask you about pre-planned vacation before they start you so if you are legitimate, you could make it work. "cube farm" environment, but they are spacious cubes. Forget browsing the internet, even on lunch. Almost any site not work related is blocked. A lot of company sponsored events outside of work which , depending on your supervisor, might get you a lot of grief about not attending.
Also, you must pay to wear jeans on Friday. I have a feeling the company uses this as a write off. So just know that when you "donate", your really just lowering the tax-bill for Bob.
Advice to Senior Management
Just be a little more empathetic about what your doing to your employees. Practice what you preach, if you want to lower turnover and get commitment from employees, which is the current rhetoric, you have to give a little in return, and quit the cult-like stuff.
