I worked at Rhodes College full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The students are excellent, and while the teaching load is considerable it is still sufficiently light that one can get serious research done. The faculty is *extremely* collegial, and discussions over lunch at the Rat are always a lot of fun. That said, Rhodes had a nimble administration that was able to help people identify and take advantage of opportunities.

    Cons

It's higher education, so things move at the speed of a higher ed bureaucracy. That isn't Rhodes-specific, though. Advising is time-consuming.

I worked at Rhodes College part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

During my time at Rhodes, the Urban Studies Dept. chair was excellent with regard to appropriately scheduling student employees and offering any assistance our group required to perform our job well.

    Cons

Occasionally, projects overwhelmed the department's abilities.

I worked at Rhodes College as an intern (more than a year)

    Pros

Great supervisors who are interested in your personal and professional development; interactions with people of different departments; my own department felt like a work family

    Cons

I felt like I worked harder and had more results than some coworkers but we had the same salary.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize the employees who go above and beyond and reward them appropriately or encourage the weaker links to pick up their own slack.

I worked at Rhodes College part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The opportunities to gain leadership skills and take hope good pay as an RSAP are surprisingly abundant and varied. Rhodes does a good job of matching students to jobs that actually reflect their skills and interests, not just opportunities for pay.

    Cons

Because student workers report to the department for which they work 99.9%, it can be hard to deal with central administration who often don't fully understand exactly what you do or why. Each department manages its workers in different ways, and the differences between academic departments, physical plant, the library, etc. can be immense.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Bring RSAPs together throughout the semester for training or to swap knowledge and get ideas about and from one another's work.

I have been working at Rhodes College

    Pros

You are given a lot of responsibility and freedom to complete your own projects. You need to have strong project management and self-starting skills to be successful.

    Cons

There is a lot of bureaucracy, which can be a road block to actually affecting change. The higher development positions can be pretentious at times, too.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at Rhodes College part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

I feel like I have a work family. They are very understanding if an emergency comes up and you have to come in to work late or can't come in at all. My coworkers also are very supportive of one another as well.

    Cons

Staff of other departments sometimes walk past the reception desk without notice which indicates a lack of respect for my position.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep doing what you're doing.
