I have been working at Risk Management Solutions full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Lots of learning to be had for someone who would like experience in the Insurance/Reinsurance Cat Modeling Business

    Cons

Large iniative to roll out new flagship product RMS One, bombed in Apri 2014. Since then, the CEO has repeatedly said that he is ultimately responsible numerous times. Meanwhile, he has begun major layoffs. I witnessed, just today, at least 10 people in my off be walked out. The company can afford to pay for lunch every Wednesday, keep a fully stocked free snack bar, pay in for a company perks plan and the other numerous programs that wasteful spending is done on, and they can't afford to pay employees? They knew this was a problem in April, and yet continued to hire more people; including paid graduate interns. This company has proven its just like every other company. For all the lip service about valuing employees, at the end of the day, employees don't matter at all.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Buck up and take responsibility for your mistakes. Hemant Shah should step down or be terminated for his complete and utter failure as a leader.

    Pros

It was fun till operations started hiring to support new cloud initiative.

    Cons

Product in the cloud will not work, poor choice in the future. Too much data, security issues and stability will be a problem for RMS one to work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Retire and ride off into the sunset.

I worked at Risk Management Solutions full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    - lunch and snacks
    - free gym, and shuttle to bart station

    Cons

    - They laid off half of the organization (includes Software engineer, QA, HR, Product Management)
    - RMS (One) is failure and now they are trying to re-build it using open stack
    - They don't know what platform they wanna build
    - No vision
    - Hiring and firing company (some engineers were hired 6 months back and now they got laid off)
    - After laid off they only gives 6 days for H1b people to find a new job

Advise: don't join this company ( they will try to give you more money and after some time you will get laid off or get fired) before joining this company please talk to some one who worked for RMS in past.

I have been working at Risk Management Solutions full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

There are lot of smart people here to work with. Plenty to learn - catastrophe modeling, insurance domain, cutting edge technologies. Competitive salaries and benefits.

    Cons

Too much politics. The company does not value it's people or their contribution towards the company. The entire company worked really really hard to deliver their flagship product on the cloud and now they have changed their mind. This has caused lot of frustration in the people and the whole thing is handled so bad there was not even a communication from upper management as to why the product cannot go live. It may as well be just a big political move who knows. Now they are starting from scratch and who knows if this new thing that they are building will see the light of day or not.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop the reorgs - that's not your problem. Changing the hierarchy or the people will not solve the problem here. What you need to do is stop the atrocious politics going on in the company. You have lost enough good people and you cannot afford to loose more. Stay focused on what you want to do and take another look at RMS(one) that you have in your backyard before going to build a new one - it has lot of potential.

    internship

Current Employee - Intern in Newark, CA

I have been working at Risk Management Solutions as an intern

    Pros

smart people, interesting work, room to learn, good work-life balance (flexibility), great compensation for an internship

    Cons

interdepartmental communication is poor, sometimes intradepartmental communication can be frustrating with teams spread out across continents and with different priorities in different locations

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communication and coherency between and within groups is important. It stresses everyone out and hurts productivity to have groups split focus (ex. product management is essentially two groups, one focusing on product development and the other on client-facing practices). It sounds like the company reorganizes a lot.

    Personal growth opportunity

    Cons

Company is going through growing pains from medium size company to large company.
Company still getting a grip on how things should be structured internally.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep the open communication coming. This is a good thing.

    Pros

    -Thursday free lunch
    -Gym and noon walk
    -Using some new technology
    -Coworkers are knowledgeable and nice

    Cons

Used to be a very organized and harmonious company until the CEO wanted to put the product on the cloud. The idea itself is very innovative and appealing, but the implementation is really poor and off the track. CEO fired CTO after the final client meeting and blamed everything on the transparency between CTO and himself. Then CEO decided to launch his plan to reorganize the Dev and QA dept which would make the numbers look better before the next round of investment from the board. Most people are very disappointed and scared about the recent layoffs and current organization since now the CEO just wants to save his a** no matter how!! If one day we wake up and see the news like RMS is sold to some other company, we won't be surprised. There won't be anyone would cry for this company any more. All the people who had been working their a** off to bring out the ditched product, will eventually leave this company or let go. There is no loyalty or trust in this company or with this CEO.

    Starting to fall apart.

    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee
    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee

I have been working at Risk Management Solutions

    Pros

Colleagues have great connections with one another on a personal level which makes the day fun. However, most people either do not know how to perform their job or are stifled by management who has their own agenda or idea of how things should be run even though they have been with the company a very short time or have never actually worked a related position.

    Cons

Management having their own ideas and not consulting with the people who actually do the work to see if their ideas make sense or even add value. Just like Rms(one) which was created upon ideas that the internal creators thought would be "cool" without properly consulting clients, projects pop up internally all the time that do not add true value. OWL for instance a poor excuse for a good idea had way to much money and time spent for something that already existed on rms.com... Managements defense here was that they pitched the idea to clients who said they would like it if they were given it... Of course the client is going to say yes they would like it... Its like offering the client a ferrari however all they need is a standard car... Not to mention OWL is a lemon and has many more issues then the "standard car" the clients had been using.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I could go on but ill just leave it at this... Please consult your employees who actually carry out the work before trying to implement new ideas and projects.
