Pros
Riverbed offers the superior product solution in the WAN optimization space. The company's engineering and R&D staff is excellent.
Cons
Typical first level sales management's role is that of rolling up forecasts and attempting to insert oneself into field sales activity but with no clear picture of where and how to add value. The rising tide of increasing sales and strong customer adoption because of the performance of the solution have many first level field sales managers believing that they are the proximate cause for the success in the various sales territories when in most cases, the real value was added by the field sales and engineering team. This same success has unfortunately bred an arrogance on the part of the field sales team in the eyes of many customers - not everywhere - but in enough places that this perception has been frequently published. There has also been a tendency to regard all territories as equal in opportunity and assigning them all similar quotas; reality, of course, has a Chicago as markedly different than a Tucson.
Advice to Senior Management
One size does not fit all.
Pros
The people at Riverbed are among the best I have ever worked with. Not only is everyone bright, creative, passionate, and dedicated, but they are also incredibly welcoming and supportive. My experience has shown less politics than at other companies and more collaboration between organizations. The Technical Support organization is the exceptional.
Cons
There seems to be a lot of pressure to be at the San Francisco HQ, but the company needs to get comfortable with spreading out responsibilities and decision making to other locations as the company is growing at a fast clip. It is great that the company maintains the small company feeling, but it feels like leadership takes that for granted and they really should be nurturing that through more all hands events and touching base with every team.
Advice to Senior Management
It would be extremely motivating to have Jerry hold more all hands events to rally the team and share his passion with all of us.
Pros
Fall in love with this place since day 1.Open environment, everyone works hard and play hard. Really appreciate the transparency between upper mgmt and it's employees. You are working on cutting edge technology with the highest talent and brightest mind. Everyone here is friendly. (RVBD is #1 in WAN optimization as of today) Free perks and the game rooms are always a plus. Awesome location for both SF and Sunnyvale, lots of great food around the office, and Sunnyvale is moving to the brand new balling building soon. Best place to work in the valley.
Cons
Cannot think of anything negative about Riverbed. Work can be little fast paced at times.
Advice to Senior Management
Need free Cal train passes : )
Pros
I've been a defense contractor and IT contractor for a decade, so I have a pretty good sampling of the good and the bad! Everything my past employers have done wrong, this place does right. It's a company that thrives on the motto of "we only hire rockstars." And they've done so, and it's worked beautifully. They dont just hire the managers or engineers that are fantastic on paper - you have to have a pulse, a personality, and social cohesion. They dont hire employees, they hire team members, and its a feeling you get from the first interview.
Cons
It's new, relatively young, and the stock has been volatile. All of that said, its not as bad as it could be.
Advice to Senior Management
Keep rocking!
Pros
Good field to learn, Good working environment, I have respect for my coworkers and their abilities.
They have the resources and the know how to get things done.
Cons
You will not be hand held. If you want to grow you have to take the initiative yourself.
You cannot be shy if you need help. You have to hunt down those with the knowledge. That said, people are friendly and willing to help.
Advice to Senior Management
Upper mgmt, keep working your magic
Middle mgmt, continue to empower your employees, give them room to come up with solutions.
Pros
Very open environment, good people, fast pace and fast growth. Freedom to manage your own time. Everyone is energetic.
Cons
Seem to be in start up mode, lack of formal process.
