I worked at Robin Hood Foundation as a contractor for less than a year

    Pros

Great Atmosphere. Feel Good about the work you do knowing that you are helping the homeless of NYC.

    Cons

General Confusion. Lots of "temp" workers who have been there for years and are still not made staff. High Turnover.

I worked at Robin Hood Foundation full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Robin Hood has some of the brightest and most motivated persons working on its core mission to Fight Poverty in NYC. The Board of Directors pays for all operating costs so 100% of the donations go to Robin Hood's Grantees and the organization has raised and distributed over 1 Billion dollars in its 25 year history. Its Executive Director is a fantastic and charismatic leader in soliciting funds, producing world class entertainment events and encouraging and inspiring others to join this organization. The Programs team manages grants well and Program Officers are outstanding.

    Cons

By sharp contrast, the CEO is ineffective, and has never demonstrated any ability other than trying to outshine the Executive Director. Staff is divided between the two leaders, and unfortunately, the Finance, Operations and Development teams present a fractured dysfunctional team. Turnover at Robin Hood is substantially higher than other organizations, this is due to lack of career advancement, a schizophrenic personality of senior leaders and power plays that make a hostile environment. Decisions by committee are made, challenged and reversed often. Staff feel powerless and are unable to force change, because the change must come from the top.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The only way to fix the problem is to remove the obstacle. The CEO/Executive Director battle must be decided, and the CEO must focus on Internal Operations and be given explicit goals to make Robin Hood one of the best places to work- She can't delegate this to HR.

I have been working at Robin Hood Foundation full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Robin Hood encourages a great work/life balance. The benefits and work schedule are extremely generous and employee-friendly. I have noticed that if one is smart and dedicated, they will receive respect and inclusion. Definitely the place for hard-workers and self-starters.

    Cons

There isn't a hierarchy here, so if someone is looking to 'climb the ladder' this isn't the place for them. However, if one wants a wide breadth of knowledge on a variety of skill sets, this is a great place to work. It has its negatives just like any gathering of 100 people, but they are far fewer and less toxic than most places!

I worked at Robin Hood Foundation full-time

    Pros

Amazing coworkers- despite disfunction, the org continues to attract great staff at the lower levels; mission is compelling; highly invested and powerful board; far reach in nonprofit community in NYC

    Cons

Terrible communication practices from senior staff; new leadership intended to fix management issues has made them even worse; too many micromanagers in charge who don't trust their highly capable staff or each other; no real opportunity for advancement or professional development

I worked at Robin Hood Foundation

    Pros

Robin Hood's missions is wonderful (helping to fight poverty throughout New York City). The organization has some great young inspired individuals/minds doing good work and making a real difference. Working at Robin Hood also provides the opportunity to enjoy some fun perks at various points throughout the year, including attendance to private concerts, movie premiers, sporting events, etc.

    Cons

Some major cons: Atrocious lack of management - how can you expect to employ reasonably happy and effective individuals if you crush their souls, say terrible things behind their backs, undermine their efforts and treat them like undeserving minions? No cohesiveness at all in management, terribly misguided and machiavellian individuals are assigned to leadership roles for no apparent reason (and wildly overpaid). Animosity trickles throughout the organization, from the top-down. A real shame.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Nasty people who are overpaid for poor performance and complete ineffectiveness should be more far more appreciative of optimistic young employees working very hard for very little reward.

I worked at Robin Hood Foundation full-time

    Pros

Insurance benefits and the knowledge that you are working for an organization that gives a great amount of grants to organizations in NYC that matter.

    Cons

Senior staff has unclear and disrespectful style of communication to their employees, plus they are not accountable for any of their negative actions.
No support, encouragement or constructive feedback for employees, resulting in high turnaround of staff and bad morale.
