I have been working at Rocket Software full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Great, smart, educated people with whom you really want to work, who are ready to discuss, support and help you.

    Cons

Very soon you will be stuck with your salary and title. It is not impossible to grow further, but you really need to be luck, working hard and show yourself at the right place at the right time (the luck is the most important thing here). This is a company of "wheel inventors", instead of using already tested, reliable solutions and frameworks, which can be de facto standard for industry, everything must be implemented from the scratch. It can be good at the begging to understand how it works for junior developers, but it is definitely not reducing the cost of development and further maintenance. People treated as resource, not as human. But it is only for high level management, which is always telling that we are the one big family, but nobody actually care about your family, your personal life and your personal opinion.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You really should change your policy about using 3rd parties software, because it can really decrease development and maintenance cost and put company to the new level. You should stop thinking about team as the one big piece of something, you should think that team consist of individuals and work with them as with individuals.

I have been working at Rocket Software

    Pros

Good people, Free coffee, some high carb snacks.

    Cons

    Andy is pretty clueless.
The focus is on pleasing IBM and chasing old technology for it's revenue stream.
The strategy for a while seemed to be to buy up existing companies and then bleed them of their revenue while ensuring that the technical people left. That was supposed to get Rocket to double it's size. That failed.
    Today there is no strategy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Andy, cash out, step aside. Let the company hire some professionals and maybe some women/people of color to bring the company into this century.
The response to the employee survey was, 'we're going to weed out the disgruntled' Maybe it should've been, 'look inward.'

I worked at Rocket Software full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

good medical benefits, intelligent and passionate workforce. Much of the company has been there for a long period of time so there is good rapport. Some areas of excellence - strong IT department, Finance function, some R&D groups.

    Cons

Limited growth potential - both for the company and employee. The company is working to reposition itself for growth rather than gradual decline, but most of the businesses were already mature when they were acquired, so without making dramatic changes, or making more aggressive acquisitions, the trajectory is unlikely to change.

Like most companies, career development needs to be managed by the employee - do not expect management to contribute. It is not an expectation made of the management team and career opportunities in general are limited.

Concerning within the last year is the departures and demotions of women. Only a handful of women remain in management positions (none remain on the executive team).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Know the strengths of your business model and stick to them - don't try to be something you're not. Manage the excessive expense around the wild events (sales kickoffs, leadership meeting, Christmas parties). Excessive drinking is no longer in fashion and the cost could be better spent in other areas.

I have been working at Rocket Software full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The best thing about working at Rocket is the quality of your peers... smart people in every position. There is a lot of opportunity to do amazing work, as long as you are self-directed and can figure it out on your own. If you can manage your own workload, and find time to do other cool stuff, there is an opportunity to create and grow. If you need direction, this might not be the place for you. Excellent enticements to join, including 100% paid health insurance, generous vacation and time off policies, and matching 401K.

    Cons

Exciting place to be, when you first join. After the initial honeymoon phase, the recognition and visibility just goes POOF. No one seems to be helping employees develop a career path, and it's easy to get overlooked. Raises? Don't hold your breath. Three HR plans in three years... where are we going, Rocket? Help us out here. Rocket attracts good talent, but does not work hard enough to retain the same employees. Professional development budgets are zero or very small, and conferences and training are handed out on a "it's who you know" basis. Management changes are like a revolving door at Rocket. Culture is still being defined, rapid growth is not handled well.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take care of the smart employees that already made the commitment to Rocket. We liked it enough to leave our former jobs, now make us like it here. Pay attention to keeping our strengths, and retaining us/

I have been working at Rocket Software full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Rocket has some great people working for them. They have acquired several software companies over the past 10 years that have brought in some very good talent. Rocket has a great benefit package and the CEO seems to truly care about the employees.

    Cons

After Rocket acquires a company, they allow the existing management of the acquired company to continue "business as usual". There seems to be no review of said managers skills - whether good or bad - and when there is a bad manager and his/her behavior is brought to the attention of upper management - they do nothing about it. Sales numbers and moral goes down and then they start firing sales people as if it was their fault.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees who are smart, hard working and dedicated. Ask your employees about their management and let them review their manager's skills and behaviors. Fire managers that are causing disruption and moral issues. Promote from within before looking outside the company. Don't be like all the other large software companies out there!

    2. Over focus on the Mainframe
    3. Older employee base
    4. Under-resourced in many areas.

I have been working at Rocket Software full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Very large and stable software company. They know software, how to write software and how to sell software. They are rapidly growing via organic sales, cross product sales and acquiring new companies. They pay 100% of your health insurance along with other standard benefits. Company is world-wide and many people work from home.

    Cons

It's easy to get lost in such a large corporation. Company is EBITDA driven, so they watch expenses very, very closely, sometimes to the detriment of sales.

I have been working at Rocket Software full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Wonderfully passionate people. Very good medical benefits. Very well appointed office spaces.

    Cons

This is a stepping stone job. The culture here, communicated mainly via executives and supported by HR, is that you as an individual do NOT have anything to contribute to Rocket. The gift of your paycheck is to shut-up and do as you are told. Ideas are not welcome here. There are no product maps... no strategic plans... no aspirational goals. There is nothing on paper that employees can look to in Rocket's future to make them invest in themselves or in their own career.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ask your employees. That's it. Just ask. AND LISTEN.
