I worked at Rocket Software (More than 10 years)

    Pros

There a lot of very nice, hard working people. The company is doing well and have been for the last 6-8 years.

    Cons

There isn't a lot of growth opportunity with their business model of growth by acquisition.

    Advice to Management

They have started programs to assist employees with some of their goals. Keep on track. It is important for employee satisfaction.

    Pros

Company has clear goals and is very customer focused. Customer's are routinely interviewed for how they like Rocket and all feedback is acted upon

    Cons

There are not really any specific cons compared to any other medium sized company

    Pros

Strong management, clear goals, top talent hired, racially diverse, positive work environment, balanced work/play, some flexibility in work hours

    Advice to Management

Improve office work space - more privacy and less noise

I worked at Rocket Software full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Medium-sized company that is growing. Many highly skilled and knowledgeable employees willing to share that knowledge. Excellent health benefits.

    Cons

Formerly nimble, flat structure now adding more and more layers of management. Non-technical people now control much of the company. Rarely promote from within. Culture of secrecy about future plans. Successful company not willing to spread the wealth. Some employees thrive, while others go for years without raises.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees, they know what can work. Stop following the latest management trend: once something works, stick with it. You can evolve from there.

    Pros

Takes care of its employees. Ethical management. Community feel.

    Cons

Matrix organization of employees results in a "you're not in charge of me!" impasse sometimes.

    Advice to Management

Educate employees of all backgrounds on the products we are selling

    Pros

Good people, Free coffee, some high carb snacks.

    Cons

Andy is pretty clueless. The focus is on pleasing IBM and chasing old technology for it's revenue stream. The strategy for a while seemed to be to buy up existing companies and then bleed them of their revenue while ensuring that the technical people left. That was supposed to get Rocket to double it's size. That failed. Today there is no strategy.

    Advice to Management

Andy, cash out, step aside. Let the company hire some professionals and maybe some women/people of color to bring the company into this century. The response to the employee survey was, 'we're going to weed out the disgruntled' Maybe it should've been, 'look inward.'

I have been working at Rocket Software full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great, smart, educated people with whom you really want to work, who are ready to discuss, support and help you.

    Cons

Very soon you will be stuck with your salary and title. It is not impossible to grow further, but you really need to be luck, working hard and show yourself at the right place at the right time (the luck is the most important thing here). This is a company of "wheel inventors", instead of using already tested, reliable solutions and frameworks, which can be de facto standard for industry, everything must be implemented from the scratch. It can be good at the begging to understand how it works for junior developers, but it is definitely not reducing the cost of development and further maintenance. People treated as resource, not as human. But it is only for high level management, which is always telling that we are the one big family, but nobody actually care about your family, your personal life and your personal opinion.

    Advice to Management

You really should change your policy about using 3rd parties software, because it can really decrease development and maintenance cost and put company to the new level. You should stop thinking about team as the one big piece of something, you should think that team consist of individuals and work with them as with individuals.

    Pros

Great benefits, Health, Life Disability Insurance and 401K with employer match Team focus Knowledgeable leadership Flexible work schedule Proactive HR Department Company actively seeks employee input Growing company

    Cons

Company growth was listed as a positive, but with growth change must occur. Company could benefit from proactively posting job openings internally.

    Advice to Management

Continue promoting innovation, new ideas are key to success. Provide more information on career advancement opportunities internally.

I worked at Rocket Software full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

good medical benefits, intelligent and passionate workforce. Much of the company has been there for a long period of time so there is good rapport. Some areas of excellence - strong IT department, Finance function, some R&D groups.

    Cons

Limited growth potential - both for the company and employee. The company is working to reposition itself for growth rather than gradual decline, but most of the businesses were already mature when they were acquired, so without making dramatic changes, or making more aggressive acquisitions, the trajectory is unlikely to change. Like most companies, career development needs to be managed by the employee - do not expect management to contribute. It is not an expectation made of the management team and career opportunities in general are limited. Concerning within the last year is the departures and demotions of women. Only a handful of women remain in management positions (none remain on the executive team).

    Advice to Management

Know the strengths of your business model and stick to them - don't try to be something you're not. Manage the excessive expense around the wild events (sales kickoffs, leadership meeting, Christmas parties). Excessive drinking is no longer in fashion and the cost could be better spent in other areas.
