Pros
Rockwell is very flexible with personal time and offers a lot of time off. Employees accrue vacation at 10 hours/month + 40 hours personal/sick leave acquired yearly on date of employment anniversary. They offer good benefits, but these are slowly becoming prohibitively expensive. The atmosphere in the ICT Service Center is very relaxed with a very casual dress code.
Cons
There is next to no chance for advancement. There is a very strong "old guard" mentality; nobody is getting promoted here until the current management retires or dies. Top down communication is horrible. There is next to no recognition for a job well done. The pay is on average below that of other companies nationally for the same position.
Advice to Senior Management
Communicate with employees more effectively. Structure organization to offer employees more paths of advancement. Recognize and reward competent employees.
Pros
Good work/life balance under most managers. Easy-going atmosphere. Tuition reibursement is a plus. Generally very stable and secure, even in poor economic climate.
Cons
Slow career progression for young employees. HR has absolute influence over promotions. Senior management is a bit short-sighted in development of new products and releasing funding up front to address issues that would save more money in the future. Even getting small amounts of money approved is a major process.
Pros
They are a stable employer with decent benefits and great engineering expertise.
Cons
They do a poor job of giving pay raises to current employees.
Advice to Senior Management
Focus more on execution and talent when promoting or hiring employees and less on attempting to force a diverse workforce. Hire and promote the best applicants \ employees for the job.
Pros
Great people. Fun place to work. Endless opportunities. Great benefits. Upper Management is extremely visible.
Cons
Unless you are an engineer the pay rates seem below average. Promotions can be hard to come by.
Pros
Rockwell Collins promotes an innovative environment.
Cons
Due to current government cuts the government systems division is having cut backs to be competitive.
Advice to Senior Management
Nothing to add.
Pros
starting pay for fresher is 5lk. Few development projects are here
Cons
Has to work more than 12hrs a day. Mini. emp benefits are not here, example Cab/Bus service not provided for people work in late hours. Most of the times has to work on weekends with out any compensation/comp off. We cant even make a local cal from the phones provided to us. Horrible management. No one is here to listen ur concerns. Managing dr himself calls a cheap labor an immature engineers. U are not even supposed tobe in seen in Cafeteria other than lunch/snack timings. No team outings, no team lunch, no games, believe me management never willing to listen ur voices. No process, people to development without planning, design and proper unit testing. Forget about work recognition. Appraisals are fully biased. 3months notice period and that too u will get half salary in notice period. No work from home. No scheduled work
Advice to Senior Management
Employees are not slaves. They are humans. Learn to listen to them. Respect them.
Pros
Good benefits, good location, (California)
Cons
Favoritism is rampant. No career growth unless you are female. Employee support for mgmnt has eroded steadily over the past several years. (As evidenced by employee surveys) HR Leadership refuses to take ownership of the problem (tho, that is something their employees are graded on everyday) Executives are treated like Gods and unapproachable.
Advice to Senior Management
Change senior leadership in HR. They are totally corrupt.
Pros
Benefit packages are decent, but getting worse.
Good to gain experience and network with very good engineers.
Flexibility when taking time off is needed.
Cons
Hard to move up the chain due to politics.
Management in certain areas are very inefficient, leading to over-staffing in some departments, under-staffing in most.
Projects are usually impossible to meet.
Several layoff waves in the past 3 years, followed by unexplained waves of hiring, leaves inconsistent staffing.
Constant management changes. In 3 years, I've had 7 different managers, which makes it hard to establish a relationship. Ultimately this leads to your work not getting the recognition it deserves. It also leads to staffing issues. You might be working your behind off 60-70 hours a week, while the guy next to you spends the whole day playing on the internet. And since it is generally hard to get fired, incompetent workers stick around for longer than they should.
Not the best paying company.
Advice to Senior Management
Focus on your employees satisfaction and less on just shareholders! A lot of employees are shareholders anyways.
Also, train management better. Out of 7 different managers, only 3 had any idea what management's involvement and role should be, and only 1 actually cared about his employee's career and professional goals.
Pros
Good benefits, annual salary increases
Cons
This company will take everything you give them and not necessarily recognize or reward you for it. Likewise, if you just do the bare minimum they won't necessarily hold that against you.
Advice to Senior Management
Management needs to decide what business model to use. Are we building custom avionics for each customer or product line avionics with customizations for each customer?
Pros
Most of the days you can get away by working 6 hours a day.
Work is not that challenging (if that's what you like).
Good work-life balance.
Cons
Most importantly, if you are looking for a company to do your green card and you have other options, DON'T JOIN THIS COMPANY. Before I join, I got an email statement from HR saying that they would do my green card after one year based on my manager's review. I did very well during that year. Near the end of the year, when I go to talk to my manager, he says HR has changed their policies and all new hires would have to wait for 5 years before they do their green card. Even when I showed them the email HR had sent me before I join, they did not change their mind. Be very wary about trusting what the HR tells you before you join.
This is almost a career killer if you are a software developer. You will be stuck with the outdated technologies and methods. Change is very hard to bring about in this kind of environment. You will be unfit to work in almost any other environment.
The work is not at all challenging. Every thing is mechanized and very impersonal. Compared to my newer companies and the ones I worked in before I join Rockwell Collins, people are not as interesting or energetic.
Certainly not a place for singles. Most singles can't stay there for more than a few years. It's a boring boring town.
Management is very arrogant and usually don't welcome new ideas.
Promotion is very rare.
Salary for software engineers in Avionics is way below other industries.
Advice to Senior Management
Try to be competitive to keep software engineers in the company.
Stick to what you say to an employee before he/she joins.
Make the environment more personal and less mechanized.
