    Pros

Gain lots of skills and knowledge, co-workers and store management are a joy to work with. Great for students or retirees. This is a great job for part time work.

    Cons

Terrible benefits, high turnover, low morale and low pay across the board. Employees are over-worked and underpaid. No complaints about staff. Management in the stores are not given what they need to retain employees or provide opportunities for advancement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider investing more in employees, they should not be treated as replaceable parts. You have amazing people working for you. I recommend giving back to them more for all they do for your company.

    Pros

Some managers were great, some co-workers were like a little family, felt appreciated by some management.

    Cons

Somewhat understaffed sometimes. When few people were working, customers would get grumpy and everyone would wind up suffering. Some management less appreciative, a few slackers brought the team down.

Current Employee - Store Manager in Fall River, MA

    Pros

The people who work in the stores

    Cons

-HUGE ego at the top of the chain who is looking for "yes" men (increase sales, lower shrink, improve inventory, lower payroll and you won't receive so much as a thank you unless you kiss the ring
-High turnover-I have never seen a company go thru Dist. Managers & Store Mangers so fast
-You will not be rewarded for your efforts )

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

-I'm sure there is no advice you will take because you think everything is perfect, but try listening to your store staff and not just for what you WANT to hear

    Pros

The company does care about their employees, but often it is the store manager that disappoints the employee. This is not the company's intention.

    Cons

Corporate doesn't have a strong grasp of what is going on in the stores personnel wise. The district managers must make it more of a priority to get to know their store employees. It is very difficult to know employee morale when stores are spread out over a large geographic area without district manager involvement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Establish better communication with the store employees to make them feel like they matter.

    Pros

Discount (15% for associates, 20% for keyholders, 25%for management, though I heard they were lowering management's discount), good coworkers, I had good keyholders at the store I worked at, and when I left, a great manager. But that store went through 6, or maybe 7? store managers in 6 years.. Good crew to work with

    Cons

Corporate. Upper level management. CEO. Almost no hope of job advancement. The I.t department. the pay. I started at 8.50 in 2008, was raised to 8.92 in 2009, 9.00 in 2010, and when I left this June, hadn't gotten a raise yet. 5 years experience, for 9.00 an hour? Doesn't matter how hard you work here, corporate changes their mind on procedures constantly.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Check yourselves, before you wreck yourselves. Stop worrying about the dress code, worry about your employee's satisfaction, and pay rates. Barely above minimum wage for most of them, and the cost of living goes up?

    Pros

Good associate relations, down to earth most of the time. Small stores allow low level associates to experience more management type duties. Small size also allows for true team-like operation, managers and associates.

    Cons

Minimum wage pay, stores often stretched for help. Increasing expectations from corporate management. No opportunities for promotion or job movement. Often long hours with lots of running around from place to place if busy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Increase opportunities for associates to take on additional responsibilities for extra pay, invest in more associates

    Pros

Learn more about hardware, paint, gardening etc that can be used in everyday life. Employees for the most part are great to work with.

    Cons

Pay rate is very low. They promise raises and then don't give them. Corporate office aren't the brightest people. If business suffers then so doesn't your hours

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If your going to promise someone a raise, do it. If someone works their butt off for you, show appreciation.
