I have been working at Rodale full-time

    Pros

Great brands to work for, and good perks, especially in Emmaus but a few in NYC too, like Pilates and a yoga room, plus fitness club reimbursement.

Everyone works pretty hard and there is a lot of turnover at the magazines especially, but there is a fun culture for the most part.

    Cons

It's hard to get a promotion at times, unless you bounce around to different brands within the company.

I have been working at Rodale as a contractor

    Pros

This company values and promotes a work/life balance, which I can't say for most companies I've been a part of. I was reluctant to take a lunchtime exercise class because of the time it would take and I was encouraged and told it's part of the job. It's nice to see a media company practice what it preaches.
Their foray into the sales world with rodales.com is interesting. It's important for magazines to diversify income and dive into new sources of revenue.

    Cons

In the year I've been here, I haven't experienced a con.

    Pros

Rodale puts great focus on personal health and mental well being. Great company benifits but the salaries are below standard. Management does not listen to those below their pay grade.

    Cons

Salary is much too low next to national average, no raises to speak of even though they are promised. Management does not listen to those below their pay grade. You won't last long in this company because the pay will start pushing you else where

I worked at Rodale full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great benes include onsite organic cafeteria, child care, gym, walking paths. Overall, smart, good people work there ... though not necessarily in leadership positions. Was once a great company to work for, with a genuine mission. Not so sure anymore.

    Cons

Disconnected departments. Owner overinvested in foolish eco-retail online business. HR department without much of a clue, but isn't that usually the case? Arrogance and incompetence at the top of some departments, but not all. A lot of people protecting their back in the Age of Layoffs. Print magazines struggling in digital age, with ad pages way down. The New York-Emmaus connection very flawed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stay loyal to your good employees. Ask if the right people are running things?

    I worked at Rodale

    Pros

Leadership and management has a clear focus on its worthy mission - health.healing.happiness. With a Rodale at the helm it will maintain that focus.

    Cons

An infusion of fresh, mission focused talent is needed. The sooner that talent is recruited the better for the company and it's mission.

    Pros

Nice working environment. Great, talented staff, and stated mission is noble. Fairly good benefits and flexible work schedule. Nice logo.

    Cons

Confused, disorganized, incompetent management. Constant threat of layoffs. Zero work-life balance. No direction. No performance reviews. No reward for excellent performance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay attention to, and respect, your talented employees. Could be a fantastic company, if only you followed your own mission statement.
