I have been working at Rogue Wave full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The people are great....and there is some flexability

    Cons

You are always worring about your job. The company likes to grow through acquisition....and then lay people off. The pace of acquisitions is expected to pick up.....

It's very hard to move up...come here and you pretty much park your career.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees...they are the ones that help you be successful. Encourage them to grow...be friendly....quit doing the 5 o'clock walk arounds...

    I worked at Rogue Wave

    Pros

There were still some good people there … probably still are, although many left or were booted. It might be good for junior level people to get some experience. For higher levels not so much. Benefits are pretty good, but salary is on low end.

    Cons

The last few years I worked there I had almost zip to do. Years ago it was purchased by an investment group, which eventually sold it to another investment group. There is no interest in developing software. Only buying old software, cutting costs, cutting commissions and raising prices on customers. Pretty depressing place if you have any interest in doing software work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

No advice, they know what they are. They aren't a software company. They work for the investment group that owns them. Everything and everyone else is expendable. I recall a moratorium on purchasing office supplies, bean counters!

I worked at Rogue Wave full-time

    Pros

There used to be many pros to working there, but most of them went away when Brian, the CEO, moved to Colorado.

    Cons

The environment is stifling, and the trickle-down of uncaring, selfishness and terrible communication flow daily from Brian. He's pushed good execs away, forced an unattainable sales plan and makes sure he squeezes every penny to get his profit so he looks good to the owners. Culture starts at the top, and putting some words about values on posters and then never following through is a prime example of the way this company is run.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Think about the employees, not your personal bank balance.

I worked at Rogue Wave full-time

    Pros

Local coworkers are a great group. Generally, there are little or no issues there. Taken separately, the individual products have much potential.

    Cons

Acquisitions continue to burden the unqualified (and mostly original) management team. Inability to assess the values of a new company combined with an attitude of empire-building is taking its toll on the company.
Their classic and fatal flaw is the inability to listen. Consistently, the value of each new acquired company is diminished once under Rogue Wave control. Rogue Wave as a whole may become larger, but increasingly inefficient and ineffective in the process. The corporation grows as the products suffer.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn to listen. You don't even listen to yourselves. Printing goals on a coffee cup like "Humanity" "Teamwork" and "Communication" doesn't make it happen. It simply reeks with upper management arrogance.

I worked at Rogue Wave full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Looking back at the time I served at Rogue Wave, I can honestly say the pay was good and I liked the people I worked with (not for).

    Cons

Battery Ventures and Brian, the CEO, embody the definition of greed and will step on your throat to grab a dollar. There is very much a feeling that Big Brother is watching.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

In the end your reputation is what you leave behind.

I worked at Rogue Wave full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

There are a few really good people.

    Cons

No processes in place, no real Mgmt team - promoted, with no training, leaves for a lack of an effective Exec team.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Embrace change. Review turn over ratio - it's outrageous. New employees aren't sticking around, WHY Clean-house and start fresh!!

A company with a distinct division between management and staff.

I worked at Rogue Wave full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Co-workers are very helpful with peers.

    Cons

Young inexperienced middle management in Sales. Communications is poor. Laying off an employee with the reason - did not meet expectations. And not once given any idea that expectations were not being met by employee.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communications to employees. In the past, if one is not meeting expectations, putting an employee on a plan for improvement would be highly successful for both parties.

I have been working at Rogue Wave full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Rogue Wave has have several products that have install base that enables them to generate a steady revenue stream. These products include: TotalView, IMSL, PV-WAVE, SourcePro, C++ Views

    Cons

TotalView, IMSL, PV-WAVE, SourcePro and C++ Views competes with many open source and newer technologies that have more up to date "Look and Feel" and in some cases offer better fuctionality. This makes it difficult to maintain market share and generate sales to new customers.

Senior Management would like to see organic revenue growth, but this is difficult when products become dated and the infrastructure to sell these very technical products is very limited. This is a recipe for failure.

This "Recipe for Failure" leads to dissatisfied employees and turnover.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Determine which products have the greatest upside and put in place a plan to ensure they are truly world class.

Put togther a sales infrastructure that supports the organic revenue goals you are trying to achieve.

    I worked at Rogue Wave

    Pros

Colleagues are bright and supportive, Offices are nice.

    Cons

CEO (BP) since coming in in 2008 as a first time CEO has created a corporate culture that places little value on employees, and everything on making his name for the VC firm, Battery Ventures, no matter what the human cost. Frequent layoffs, information 'hording' by senior management under threat from Brian. If you just want a place to work where you are ok with keeping your head down and never expressing a contrary opinion to C-Level executives, this may be fine.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't forget the human aspect of the company. The recession is ending and the talented people will leave as better opportunities arise. You will be left with a class of B-level people if the company continues its current culture.

    I worked at Rogue Wave

    Pros

The best reason to work at Rogue Wave, at least as a C++ engineer, is that you are surrounded by some of the very best C++ software engineers in the industry. Everyone I worked with was 100% focused on delivering products of exemplary quality that everyone can be proud to have a hand in creating. It's important to note, and is different from other places I've worked, that this attitude and drive is organization wide - from the President down to the tech support folks.

    Cons

They're pretty cheap - all around. Cheap computers, cheap monitors (in 2006, I was still using a 17" CRT - because it still worked). Basically, to get really decent equipment, something has to fail. Salaries aren't that great either - not horrible, but below average. To their credit though, management's frugality has probably saved them from laying off folks when times got tight on multiple occasions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest more in your employees - keep 'em happy. With as many brilliant folks that work for Rogue Wave, throwing some decent equipment into the fix can go a long way towards keeping them happy.
