Struggling to become a successful large company.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsInteresting industry, products and customers. Very technology and engineering driven.

ConsSenior management constantly changing priorities and strategies. A new round of headcount reductions every six - twelve months. Company is trying to offset cost problems by cutting headcount and compensation and benefits -- seems like management considers this to be the universal answer to everything. Support functions have been especially hard hit making it difficult for business units to get the information they need.

Advice to Senior ManagementHire a CEO who understands how high technology, capital intensive products are developed and delivered over the long run. Anyone can come in and just cut headcount. Trying to control all decision making from the UK undermines local leadership and career development.

    Experience at Rolls-Royce Energy Systems

Purchasing (Former Employee) Mount Vernon, OH

ProsParent company is a global company and presents global opportunities

ConsToxic purchasing executive with no respect for lower level employees in the purchasing department

Advice to Senior ManagementReplace this guy before every good purchasing employee leaves your company. Train executives such as this purchasing executive to be acting global. Rolls-Royce is more than a middle Ohio company

Possibly the most gratifying experience; possibly the most frustrating experience.

    Machinist (Former Employee) Indianapolis, IN

    ProsWorking with some of the brightest minds in the aerospace industry; Many opportunities to challenge yourself and make a difference. The benefits and wages are fantastic;

ConsWorking with a bloated UAW represented hourly workforce. Same old tired union distractions make it near impossible to get anything accomplished. As a highly skilled hourly machinist wanting to make a difference, it was very difficult to work with the company without being alienated and harassed.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue doing everything you can to bust this sluggish union-culture up. Understand that there are some fantastic hourly workers that really want to see the company perform. Those things said, STOP OUTSOURCING WORK from Indy!! You can't see the full scope of the problems you are creating by doing this. Indy is fully capable.

    Rolls-Royce Work Experience

Build Engineer (Former Employee) Indianapolis, IN

ProsBest reason to work a Rolls-Royce was the Free Coffee initially, but they shortly did away with that, seriously.

ConsWorking conditions - getting away with NOT paying time/half, double time. Being lied to about length of contract.

Advice to Senior ManagementGrow up, be professional. Treat employees like they should be treated, be honest. I was so excited to work for someone like RR, BUT after this experience have changed my mind 1000% very very very disappointed.

Rolls-Royce Energy Systems in Mount Vernon, OH

New Equipment Proposals (Former Employee) Mount Vernon, OH

ProsCompetitive salaries with good benefits, Global business with worldwide customer base, part of a larger global technology-based business with a strong engineering function.

ConsCorporate processes developed for the UK-based aerospace business are frequently not applicable to the energy business with its customized products for oil and gas customers, Poor track record of cost reduction partially due to over-reliance on the aerospace supply chain for aircraft engines in low volume production, Too many free riders not held accountable for non-achievement of objectives.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe brave enough to develop and adopt processes applicable for the markets and customers you serve. Embrace product customization and make solid execution of it a positive competitive differentiator rather than fighting it and failing at it via standardization efforts that are ineffectual.

Operations Management - Graduate Program (Former Employee) Indianapolis, IN

ProsGreat graduate development programs. Great growth opportunities. Great salary and benefits

ConsRolls-Royce is laying off 400 employees in Defense, mostly in Indianapolis

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to employees and don't treat managers as if on ivory pedestal
