    Pros

I love the atmosphere and the immersion that Ron Jon has created within the stores. It just makes everyone happier and there are very few times where a customer is unhappy.

    Cons

The jobs can be very repetitive at times, especially if you are working seasonally. However, they do try and rotate you so that you get experience in other parts of the store as well.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I think that the company has drifted more towards a retail store rather than the "surf shop" it used to be. It is still a fun place to work though.

    Great benefits but lousy communication

I worked at Ron Jon Surf Shop full-time

    Pros

Ron Jon has excellent benefits for full time employees including medical, dental, vision and life as well as employee discounts and education reimbursement. The customers are genuinely happy to shop and appreciate good service. Having a set schedule with the same days off each week was also nice.

    Cons

Corporate management is very secretive and treats store management on a need-to-know basis. This makes it difficult sometimes to effectively run a store. Minimal support from corporate.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communicate more with your stores and your employees. Acknowledge the hard work of the store employees rather than finding fault with everything little thing.

MANAGERS SIT DOWN THE ENTIRE DAY JUST WATCHING AND YELLING AT THE REST OF THE EMPLOYEES - Ron Jon Ship Bottom, NJ

    Pros

    Seasonal full time
    Same hours
    Same day-off days

    Cons

Wage salary is too low for the amount of stress
Managers don't give clear orders, confuse others with different tasks at the same time.
The place is dirty everywhere, they make the employees clean the bathroom, the floors, everything before opening and yell at you if you dont do it fast and perfect...we were never told we would be janitors, cashiers, customer service and security guards...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Improve communication and give the example doing a job well done before yelling everybody.

Retail management was put in place by corporate because they don't want the headache of customers or hourly associates.

I worked at Ron Jon Surf Shop full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The discount if you stay long enough. Cool environment, most customers love to be there. If you are passionate about beach life, you will have a good time with your customers. Except for locals. The current h.r. manager and advertising manager were two of the best people I have ever worked with in a job. Both very intelligent, fair, willing to share and listen to ideas.

    Cons

Corporate has little interaction with the store, except during holidays. When they are required to work at the store, they look down on hourly associates. Advancement will only occur out of need by corporate or friendships with corporate or store management. Pay takes a long time to get to a point you could consider it a career. Retail managers are deemed not " smart " enough to work at the corporate office. Many of them are unprofessional. Locals do not like the shop and the business it brings. They are under the delusion they are Hawaiian locals and the shop has brought a wave of tourists onto their hallowed land.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Share ideas with all team members. Many young people that work there have some great ideas that could be incorporated into your business model. Show appreciation for established employees or those with previous work experience. They can add value to the organization. Stop with the nepotism and favoritism that has earned people created positions at corporate or in store management. Develop a program to mentor hourly associates. Challenge them with cerebral tasks as well as physical tasks. It will improve their effort and results.

    Pros

25 percent discount and first dibs on new merchandise. Up to 60 percent discount on hard goods through an employee program. Consistent hours.

    Cons

Unorganized. Poor communication. Corporate is detached from what is going on in their stores. Incompetent employees frequently hired. Return policies aren't followed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Spend some more time listening to your loyal employees because they aren't going to be there forever if you don't take complaints into consideration.

I worked at Ron Jon Surf Shop full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Full Time work either AM shift or PM

    Cons

The management does not care about you. You are expected to act as a security guard and chase after people if the alarm goes off as they leave, even if you are in the middle of a transaction. It is very high stress when at the front registers. Within a year after I left, only 3 or 4 of the associates were still there. All the management had been replaced and most of the other employees quit. The remaining employees I visited, said that they were miserable they just couldnt afford to leave and had not found other work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get a security guard so the employees can focus on the customers who are legit and give some training on counterfeit money.
