I worked at Ron Jon Surf Shop full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Full time set schedule. Long breaks. 25% discount.

    Cons

Corporate doesn't spend nearly as much focus on managers as they do to the rest of the staff. The staff suffered from lack of true guidance from the gms they hired the last handful of years. Environment can be hostile. Didn't really see a lot of promotions.

I have been working at Ron Jon Surf Shop full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Work the same schedule always, unless they ask you to vary. 2 days off consistently in a row. PTO decent and employee discount a real benefit.

    Cons

management and corporate. Never worked at a more disfunctional place. Corporate micro manages based on spreadsheets. Store hasn't changed in 10 years because Corp. Management hasn't, plus it won't most management in early. 40's. Encorage growth but reward favorites. Claim requirements for advancement, but do the opposite. Play the game you will go far, the less you do the more you're rewatded, regardless if they want RonJon to be career. Right.

    Advice to Management

All the good employees can see the disfunction. Start listening to everyone, you know who is a good employee, not necessarily a favorite. We come to work everyday and go beyond everyday, we deserve better. Going to loose the good employees you can hire no background check people.

I have been working at Ron Jon Surf Shop full-time

    Pros

    Guranteed hours and health insurance.

    Cons

Management is a joke, they will put you in a section and you will literally work they same section 2 to 3 times out your work week. They expect overnighters to do everything and the day shift just stands behind the register and leave all the work for overnighters to complete. Merchandisers are a joke and always watching you and complining. The turnover rate is crazy people are always quitting without notice.

    Advice to Management

Actually take the time and plan out a schedule. Increase pay because its not right to have one person doing two people's job. Stop with the favoritism and acknowledge and reward good employees.

I worked at Ron Jon Surf Shop full-time

    Pros

    Make great relationships,discounts on clothing

    Cons

More of a corporate attraction than a surf shop, Management treats you extremely poorly they rush you for no reason, make the job stressful and yell at you when something's not done as fast as they wanted it to,can't use your employee discount on surfboards and standup paddle boards, couldn't help customers that needed help in a different department because you can't leave your "zone"and that loses money

    Advice to Management

Treat your employees better and maybe they'll want to stay, give them the opportunity to make sales and be more free and open with the customers and then maybe Ron Jons can maybe one day become an actual surf shop.

    Great benefits but lousy communication

I worked at Ron Jon Surf Shop full-time

    Pros

Ron Jon has excellent benefits for full time employees including medical, dental, vision and life as well as employee discounts and education reimbursement. The customers are genuinely happy to shop and appreciate good service. Having a set schedule with the same days off each week was also nice.

    Cons

Corporate management is very secretive and treats store management on a need-to-know basis. This makes it difficult sometimes to effectively run a store. Minimal support from corporate.

    Advice to Management

Communicate more with your stores and your employees. Acknowledge the hard work of the store employees rather than finding fault with everything little thing.

I worked at Ron Jon Surf Shop full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Seasonal full time Same hours Same day-off days

    Cons

Wage salary is too low for the amount of stress Managers don't give clear orders, confuse others with different tasks at the same time. The place is dirty everywhere, they make the employees clean the bathroom, the floors, everything before opening and yell at you if you dont do it fast and perfect...we were never told we would be janitors, cashiers, customer service and security guards...

    Advice to Management

Improve communication and give the example doing a job well done before yelling everybody.

  11. Retail management was put in place by corporate because they don't want the headache of customers or hourly associates.

I worked at Ron Jon Surf Shop full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The discount if you stay long enough. Cool environment, most customers love to be there. If you are passionate about beach life, you will have a good time with your customers. Except for locals. The current h.r. manager and advertising manager were two of the best people I have ever worked with in a job. Both very intelligent, fair, willing to share and listen to ideas.

    Cons

Corporate has little interaction with the store, except during holidays. When they are required to work at the store, they look down on hourly associates. Advancement will only occur out of need by corporate or friendships with corporate or store management. Pay takes a long time to get to a point you could consider it a career. Retail managers are deemed not " smart " enough to work at the corporate office. Many of them are unprofessional. Locals do not like the shop and the business it brings. They are under the delusion they are Hawaiian locals and the shop has brought a wave of tourists onto their hallowed land.

    Advice to Management

Share ideas with all team members. Many young people that work there have some great ideas that could be incorporated into your business model. Show appreciation for established employees or those with previous work experience. They can add value to the organization. Stop with the nepotism and favoritism that has earned people created positions at corporate or in store management. Develop a program to mentor hourly associates. Challenge them with cerebral tasks as well as physical tasks. It will improve their effort and results.
