    Postive, yet frustrating

    Pros

If you are driven individual with a level head, then Roquette can offer a world of opportunities. The company as a whole (on a global level) is never content with sitting idle... because of this, opportuniites and career growth can be had, as well as international travel. A change in upper management and the board are prompting the company to make serious positive changes in the recent months. Gurnee plant and Geneva office have great locations being in the Chicagoland area with access to all that Chicago and the surrounding area have to offer.

    Cons

Being a French-based company, decisions are not always made as fast as you might like and can be a source of frustration. If you can understand the cultural differences, then you could be a good fit. Keokuk plant and office locations are located in a town that has a dwindling population, and is about 1 hour from decent shopping and dining. Because of this, bringing external talent in is difficult.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communicate to the employees, and for management in Geneva... don't forget about Keokuk... visit, be seen. Push for some autonomy from France so that decsions can be made faster... this will allow for faster growth.

    Pros

I love (most of) the people at Roquette.

The Geneva site is beautiful and set up well for customer collaboration.

    Cons

Major confusion about direction, strategy, and the future of manufacturing.

Too much energy spent on assigning blame, too little on finding a better way to do things.

The Keokuk site is ancient and years of deferred maintenance have caught up.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

They didn't want to listen when I was an employee, so I'm sure they don't want my advice now. An american CEO would be the best place to start.

    Pros

Company is investing money into an old plant site.

    Cons

Management does not trust employees. Technical decisions mostly controlled by French.
Attempts to perform root-cause problems usually turn into witch hunts and finger pointing.
Workers are expected to work with dangerous equipment and in dangerous environments
Management does not recognize personal efforts by employees who put forth extra effort to achieve company goals.
Management is rude to employees who attempt to bring task details/problems etc. to their attention.
Vocationally skilled salaried employees are not compensated for extra effort.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Suggest that upper management arrange an open meeting once per week such as a catered breakfast where employees could discuss site issues without fear of retaliation and without a forced agenda.

    Pros

    You can pad your resume.

    Cons

Management is not available for support of any kind. Safety training is unheard of, but management still expects you to live up to their "expectations." It's all a game of figuring out who will take blame when something goes wrong. There is no room for career advancement. It feels like you are nothing more than a body expected to sit there and not complain for the next 10 years or so. Production is a struggle, you have to fight for resources, the right to put out waste, and maintenance is understaffed. In short, there's a very good reason for the high turnover rate.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Cultivate all that talent you bother to collect instead of letting it go to waste. Don't expect monumental change to occur without supporting those who are working on the front lines.

    Pros

Ok pay for the area, and a good place to get some experance in how not to manage a Company and it people

    Cons

The French and Upper Management, spend more times in meetings on how to tie your hands even more. Big on making everything look great on paper, personnel goals, safety training, but never doing anything to fixed the problems or quality of life and safety of lower management and union personnel. Expect to live at work, putting in 60 - 70 hours per week

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

They Should all be replaced. This place was not run like this 10 years ago.

    I worked at Roquette America

    Pros

Decent salary and benefits, excellent (if not overwhelming) opportunity to gain "hard-core" process and project experience

    Cons

Long hours, rather large turnover, poor relations with French management and upper management in general, union issues.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Mr. Taret, you have/had an excellent reputation. Develop (change) upper management to respect its employees more. Work to bridge the cultural gap between the French and Americans.
