Pros
Employees turn into a second family and show support and encouragement due to the absence of manager support.
Cons
I cannot speak for other Ross Stores but my manager makes it dreadful to go to work, his moods change rapidly and you never know when he will lash out and attempt to hurt your feelings for any given reason.
Advice to Senior Management
Your employees may have a lower position as you when it comes to job title but we are still human beings. It is not okay to bring your personal problems and negative attitude into the work force and take it out on people. I sww there is a high boost of morale and overall enthusiasm the two days our manager is off. His mood effects everyone and that it no way to run a store.
Pros
Fast growing with lots of future opportunities.
Discount.
Generally fun people to work with.
Cons
Constant pressure to get by with less. I have closed a store at night with myself and 3 people for the last 5 hours leading to close which is ridiculous. It is discouraging to have such disrespectful customers and some managers that just don't take much pride in their jobs.
Advice to Senior Management
Every once in awhile it would be nice to come to work and get a surprise that is positive. Quit wasting time with long useless meetings. The store really doesn't change much. You need to merchandise. You need to recover. You need to keep your employees happy. Focus on which ever one of those needs more attention at the time not making little changes that will frustrate your employees.
Pros
Very quiet setting, not to many workers so less chattering throughout the place
Not a very heavy workload
security
Cons
Management sucks
very unorganized
sloppy displays
Very understaffed
Pros
The company discount was the most beneficial thing I received when working for Ross. The only other thing that was positive was the store's concentration on customer service.
Cons
The cons for working for Ross included : 1)lack of initiative by leaders to lead 2)poor compensation 3)deplorable work conditions for workers, and 4)prejudiced environment.
Advice to Senior Management
My advice to management would be to stop dropping the ball when it comes to leading their employees. Promote those who prove worthy, not those who are undeserving.
Pros
There is a decent employee discount.
Cons
Management at this company is horrible from in store to high levels! There is little to no recognition. They are constantly breathing down your neck for the tiniest little things. Schedules constantly being changed at the last minute. Sometimes employees are not given breaks when they should be. Theft in this company is terrible. Pay is terrible and there is never enough payroll. Morale in this company is extremely low.
Advice to Senior Management
Listen to employee feedback and appreciate them more, provide better pay and hours.
Pros
-20% off, 40%
-flexible hours
-customers are great
Cons
***************Bottom line, find yourself another job. You deserve to be treated better and work for a company who does not BS about payroll issues. It is a discount store so how do you think they can afford to have prices that are so low? BY CUTTING DOWN ON LABOR! Less Labor=more work +minimum wage =horrible place to work
-First off you will be paid minimum wage. I can say that this is the absolutely WORST job i have ever had in my life and wouldn't wish this job on my worst enemy. The atmosphere is your typical retail atmosphere: you will get good and bad customers. Since the store is a discount store, we carry very few products that are the same. What is the problem with that? people shift and dig through clothes creating a HUGE MESS that you will have to pick up (mind you this is a everyday thing). I know people who work at Walmart, Oldnavy, etc who do less than I did when I worked there and made $1 to $3 more than what I did. The coworkers are great, but that is not enough of a reason to work there.
-Hours per week. I worked in one of the largest and most profitable Ross store. Sometimes we would be 10000 over our goal in sales just in one day. Yet when they post the work hours, they are still 2000 dollars short in payroll. I have had coworkers who have had 30hrs one week then 4 hrs another.
-The only promotion you will get is to become a front end supervisor, and the only thing that they do is they they are allowed to have keys, and do pulls. Not a big deal at all. Even regular cashiers will act as a front end supervisor, but will be paid like a regular associate. Also you WILL be trained in every area of the store: front-end/cashier, dressing room, etc.
-working in the stock room: it is like a sweat shop. They hound you on how fast you put merchandise out (b/c they want you off the clock asap so they don't have to pay you past the allotted hours given to you.
-Most of the full time people have been there over a year and are usually older (40+) men/women.
-lastly, breaks....this is one of the main pet peeves. IF the lines get long they REFUSE to let you go to break. I have had days where I have had my lunch an hour before I leave (working an 8hr shift), I have had coworkers who NEVER get their breaks. I have had managers who come up to me during my break and as me to fill out paperwork, I have seen associates getting called off their break early because the line is long....
Advice to Senior Management
No advice at all, they know that they treat their employees horribly and do not care as long as they get their money they are fine. So there really is no point.
Pros
Its a good part time job or a job to get if you dont need much money. And there is always opportunity to work overtime if you need more hours.
Cons
The managers dont respect employees they treat you like the job is your life and nothin else should matter to you.
Advice to Senior Management
Management should learn how to talk to employees and treat them with respect. They need to encourage more and tell employees when there doing a good job instead of just pointing out when they are not good enough.
Pros
The 20% discount every associate receives is one of the only two positives I've found with working at Ross. The other is having some halfway decent coworkers.
Cons
The place is just like high school all over again. Management is incompetent, arrogant, and overly demanding. They micromanage like you wouldn't believe. I am receiving anywhere from 4 to 12 hours a week, despite my only availability restriction being that I cannot work past 10:20pm due to bus schedules. After informing management that I was interested in the stock lead position, they placed someone who hadn't even been in the stock room as the new lead. They have no concept of their associates having a home life outside of the store and have even told other associates "Don't make plans for after you get off, because we might need you to stay." If you're asked to stay late or come in on your day off and you're unable to, they retaliate and take away your hours. This past week, I had ten hours. Next week, I have eight. How is this a living wage?
Advice to Senior Management
Schedule people for the hours they need to pay their bills. Schedule enough people to staff the registers. Treat your customers like customers, not cattle.
Pros
20% discount - and ZD leadership
Cons
This company is a sweat shop - after two plus years with the company it's evident they will continue to overworked their employees without a clear direction. Bottom line is profit for shareholders, disregarding the fair treatment of their employees. Every week the message to stores is to control payroll, when stores are understaffed and receiving an increasing amount of merchandise. We all feel the pressure without any TRUE support from Corporate. Let's make the CEO richer while exploiting the minimum wage employes - capitalism at its best to say the least!
Don't work here - find another opportunity with another company, or better yet consider start your own business.
Advice to Senior Management
Have you considered becoming the greatest company to work for in 2012? Look at your corporate culture - make some changes: treat your employees with respect and dignity. Stop the talk about TRUE spirit, and actually act upon it. How much more profit you can earn by applying the golden rule!
