    Good Company for retail

    Former Employee - Anonymous Employee

    I worked at Ross Stores

    Pros

Flexible hours and helpful people made the experience good. Management was good and they knew what they were doing. Expectations were clear and reasonable.

    Cons

Pay was low, but that is to be expected for an entry level position in retail. Customers were rude and could be disrespectful.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide more incentives to your leaders to increase their moral.

I have been working at Ross Stores

    Pros

Fast-paced environment, learn how to work under pressure, management experience, experience working in teams, good for people interested in retail. Benefits outlined initially are not benefits being received.

    Cons

Not enough/incomplete training, expectations in position do not match expectations outlined in training, unrealistic expectations from upper management, multiple managers with different expectations.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make sure rolls are explicitly defined in practice, not just on paper. Make sure upper management isn't tugging their middle managers in multiple directions. Lowers morale

    Cons

Pay is low, and work can be boring but that depends on your co-works

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management is usually pretty nice and laid back, some of them are complete idiots but you take the good with the bad

I have been working at Ross Stores full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Discount is great. Very Busy work. Lots to learn. Potential for advancement if you've been properly trained. Internship for college students.

    Cons

Training can often lack especially as you advance. Makes it difficult to properly do your job.
The more outgoing you are, the more you'll be noticed. Unfortunately, that can sometimes equate to those worthy of promotion being overlooked. Associates at all levels are often under appreciated especially by upper management visiting stores. Lots of changes taking place with the company....but not necessarily the right one.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take time to get to know all Associates. No one is too small or unimportant.
You're associates will respond better and moral will be increased if you lead by being a good example.

Current Employee - Assistant Buyer II in New York, NY

I have been working at Ross Stores full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great benefits, especially at the buyer level and above. A lot of emphasis on properly equipping merchants with the tools they will need to succeed. Pretty good compensation at buyer level and above, otherwise in line. Egalitarian fashion, meaning you will not be judged by how you look or what you wear. The overall culture is pretty friendly. The company is stable and growing.

    Cons

The organization is very big. There are so many titles and levels of management to go through it becomes cumbersome at times to get things done. There are a lot of meetings, a lot of bureaucracy. There is little room for creativity, and individual thinking/opinion is not encouraged, rather punished. Just depends on what you are willing to put up with.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have seen a lot of good people leave this company because their manager wasn't invested in their growth, or didn't think they deserved promotion based off of personal objective bias. I think its important to give people the benefit of the doubt, that they might be able to do this job even though they don't have a BA in fashion merchandising, or a degree in business. Recognizing the talent you have and developing that, instead of alienating it. Especially with the younger millennials whom might feel less loyalty to begin with.
