I worked at Rovi full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good salary and benefits when you join.

    Cons

Rovi is a patent troll trying to be a company. They buy lots of companies but fail at all of them. Name one new Rovi product or company that's actually been successful after acquisition. They're terrible and the core business of patent enforcement makes them a mean company to work for. Better to sell it off in pieces rather than keep together. Zero future beyond a couple of valuable patents that keep them afloat.

    Advice to Management

Sell the company off. Find a new career.

    Pros

Free food is available in the pantry. Other than that I can't think of anything else. Hardly anything in the pros column.

    Cons

If you are in a mood to join back your school then the Bangalore organization is the best place for you to go. Pathetic work culture, people can hardly communicate in English (Not sure about the engineering team), people have no work ethics and treat you as though you are some school kid while they can boss around like your principal.

    Advice to Management

I feel sorry for you. No advice. Would be wasting my time.

I have been working at Rovi (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Salary and benefits were in line with industry. Some bright and talented individuals work at Rovi.

    Cons

No leadership, no direction, no new products and it now seems that the only thing keeping the ship afloat, patents, are worthless. Listening to the executives try to convince the street otherwise on the last earnings call left me feeling embarrassed for them. Carson's voice was cracking as if he were an intern at his first interview.

    Advice to Management

Pump so I can dump! A previous review suggested Rovi should concern themselves more with their employees than their stockholders' short-term expectations. True. Rovi epitomizes what's wrong with business today. However, with the obvious inability to deliver the numbers it's tough to say Rovi's looking out for shareholders either.

I worked at Rovi full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The projects were interesting. My group was filled with good people who cared about the systems were were building. The weekly breakfast was a nice perk.

    Cons

After the current CEO took over, the company started changing directions frequently. I worked on multiple projects that got canceled before they were finished. And, finally, our whole group was laid off and our main product transferred to a group in China.

    Advice to Management

If you are serious about something, stick to it and give the team time to finish it. If you are not serious, don't start in the first place. It is frustrating to have your project cancelled time after time.

I worked at Rovi (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The opportunities for overtime, thanks to a fairly constant turnover in staff, were plentiful if desired, and before nearly all the jobs were outsourced.

    Cons

Remarkably stupid recapitulation of previous mistakes by previous ownership and management teams, all looking for a golden bullet that minimizes expenses without hurting quality of product, but there's never a willingness to follow through with what might be necessary to achieve this in terms of resources. So, instead, good employees were constantly being let go and often being rehired when it became obvious that yet another Brilliant Managerial Innovation had failed rather similarly to the previous one. This did nothing to improve morale nor the quality of the product, whether we speak of engineering or data production and information flow.

    Advice to Management

Take your gilded parachutes and leave. Perhaps a management that doesn't hold its employees in utter contempt might actually manage to keep both quality and customer satisfaction as better rather than worse, as well as not insulting as well as driving away many of the best staff.

I have been working at Rovi full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Benefits, work flexibility. Interesting industry, entertainment, acquisitions. You get to learn a lot about the patent/IP world (whether you want to or not!). There are some extremely talented folks, if you can avoid the politics and frequent poor management decisions you could do well at Rovi.

    Cons

While the company has real potential, it carries a lot of baggage of buying and gutting companies of their high potential. If you are a product-minded person, it's hard to find pride in the IP strategy of this company. The vertical business groups don't work well together at all and there's an over abundance of VP-level sales & management that are non-technical working in a very technical environment. Very high-turnover, both through layoffs and people leaving due to high frustration level of Rovi. It's generally very hard to find seasoned subject-matter experts in the company due to the high rate of technical staff turnover. Many layoffs are ill advised (or not under advisement at all) which actually leads to higher cost and jeopardizes customer accounts.

    Advice to Management

Buy low, sell high. Imagine a company that has a foundation of solid products and business practices as a foundation, then the IP portfolio is the icing on top (not the other way around).

I have been working at Rovi full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

*Company is changing it's approach to software solutions, which means there is more opportunity to be involved in designing good, sturdy systems for content delivery. *Innovation as a part of the job, is always welcomed. *Work environment is friendly and most managers are willing to help you grow in your career.

    Cons

*Growth isn't as exponential as in most software companies *The software process might not be appealing to most developers as it is not as coding-intensive as one might expect at first. Although this is rapidly changing, it is hard to estimate the momentum of this change.
