I worked at Rovi full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Rovi's Santa Clara office is a healthy work environment. Competitive salary & benefit packages, flexible work schedules, and typically kind co-workers.

    Cons

The company has recently been described as a patent troll in the press, and although they are not the worst offender out there, Rovi has earned that reputation. (This may be considered a "Pro" if you are a Patent Attorney looking for steady work.)

Constant State of Chaos and Lack of Direction: Fragile NOT Agile

    • Career Opportunities
Former Employee - Manager in Radnor, PA
Former Employee - Manager in Radnor, PA

I worked at Rovi full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Good compensation and benefits package
Some really great people who are being sucked dry by poor, insecure and often toxic managers
It sounds like a really cool and leading edge place to work but it's not

    Cons

Leaders who instill fear in employees to avoid actually being leaders
Decision-making is always in response to the market instead of in front of it resulting in priorities changing on a dime constantly
Archaic and (obsolete in some cases) infrastructure and systems make it impossible to be flexible and adjust to changing priorities
Toxic managers swoop in and create more chaos to make themselves look good rather than proactively work on solving problems and building and leading teams
There's very little investment in people development
Additional work is often piled on without the resources to help complete it but an expectation that it will be done or else
Rovi claims to lead the way in the discovery and personalization of digital entertainment however there's nothing entertaining about working for this organization. It should be FUN but it's NOT
Very little work-life balance but lots of stress

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

My advice to the Board of Directors is to take a hard look at the executive management team top to bottom and start turning it over. This team preaches change and improvement however it is not materializing fast enough. Eventually customers will churn and start working with other companies who have invested in their core business with leading technology and a top-notch management team who are more than capable of leading their businesses (and the people who support them) to success. Also, don't be afraid to spend money on improving infrastructure and archaic systems. There is benefit in the long run however the current management team thinks mostly about today and not tomorrow.

Poor Management, Years of Technical Debt, and a Sweatshop Culture make ROVI a poor choice

    Pros

    Good salary, bonus, and benefits

    Cons

    Poor Management
    Years of Technical Debt
    Sweatshop Culture
    Extremely high turnover rate

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You're listening to the wrong people and ROVI will never be a top tier software shop until this changes
The institutionalized bad behavior of your middle management team will ultimately cost you more than you think

I worked at Rovi full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    Steady paycheck
Some good people in the "working" departments.

    Cons

Upper management constantly telling employees to leave.
    No room for career progression.
No vision for the future, acquires companies to get technology then sells them off.
Company outsources core jobs to make up for lost earnings.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

board members need to clean house.
The place is a money pit and has no future vision . nor do they deliver on their products on time.
You cant create a culture if you don't know what one is,
Management out of touch with workers, Never see management just have a conversation with anyone.

    Going Nowhere Good Fast

I have been working at Rovi

    Pros

Decent benefits, good hours, and for the most part for lower level employees, great coworkers trying to make the best of a terrible situation.

    Cons

Everything from the supervisors going up. This is a very top-heavy company where the CEOs are constantly changing their strategy with little to no regard for the employees and how they are keeping up with the work. The pay is ridiculously low, and the stress and aggravation from supervisors and managers who go out of their way to create a hostile work environment do not make it worth staying for any length of time. There is very limited career growth opportunity. Despite claims that they are working on the culture, morale and trust is at an all-time low. Bully and threatening behavior is a norm.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus your strategy and actually pay attention to all the lower level employees you currently ignore. Stop rewarding bad behavior on the part of supervisors all in the name of results for the current quarter and you might actually retain some of the amazing talent you have left.

    Pros

Great work/life balance (at least for my team), decent compensation, nice atmosphere with some really great co-workers,

    Cons

Making the clients happy is, of course, the focus, but there has to be limits. They don't really believe in their "lower" employees, and typically hire outside for leadership positions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Believe in your people and give them a chance. Many of them will surprise you with what they can do.

I worked at Rovi full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Pay and benefits, especially if upper management.

    Cons

Rovi is a top-heavy, rudderless company that you should be thankful never to have heard of before. Its products are rarely purchased or licensed, so it relies heavily on licensing patents of dubious validity. Led by over-bearing finance and legal departments, the company completely lacks all business sense. Worst company I've ever worked for.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Wake up the Board of Directors, because they are most obviously asleep at the wheel.

I have been working at Rovi full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The pay is OK and the benefits are good. There is a very small group of individuals working in a handful of departments who know what they're doing and have a forward thinking vision.

    Cons

There is zero culture. Rovi has acquired a number of companies over the years and there never seems to be any "ok, you aren't xyz company anymore, you're Rovi" going on. There are even a few acquisitions who still refer to themselves and think of themselves as their old company. Trust in the organization is at an all-time low and there is zero connection or meaning to the core values. The Doers are getting stepped on by the out of touch executives who are only concerned about their next payday. Bureaucracy is STRONG here and everything seems to be more political than strategical. In fighting between groups is high and counter-intuitive to the innovative process.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

How a company can go all-in in 2012 to improve our core values and team, only to have a majority of areas that were supposed to improve, actually DECREASE DRAMATICALLY, is a testament to everything. Not. Working. The archaic thinking that built our soon to be obsolete guides needs to be removed from this company.
