I worked at Royal Bank of Canada

    Pros

Good benefit programs, good rates on credit products, free banking

    Cons

Working out of the call center in Mississauga was horrible. You have to be sitting at your desk for 95% of the day. Which means you only had 15 mins per day to go to the washroom, get some water, talk to a friend, get help from a coworker and so on. At the end of the week your "stats" are sent out among the whole team so people can compare and contrast each other - they try to create a very unhealthy sense of competition. The salary is also not even close to being competitive with other banks and is barely more than minimum wage. There was no designated seating, getting a desk was on a first come basis so often you would be stuck without a work space and then be penalized for it. Also, you will be on an automatic dialer so you the calls keep coming and coming, and if you need to take a mental break you have to cut that out of your 15 minutes of freedom or wait until your lunch break.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management needs to consider the mental and physical health of their employees more. The environment is extremely stressful and draining. The turnover rate is ridiculously high, with about 20 new hires per month - isn't that a sign that something isn't working in your Outbound department?

I worked at Royal Bank of Canada part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Canadian. Well managed. Regular dividend payments. Locations in every Canadian town and city.

    Cons

The ATM's only dispense $20's & $50's. Please bring back an easier way to get smaller denominations without having to stand in a line in the branch after gaining some time by using the ATM in the first place..

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat your people right. Don't water down your ethics and principles to fit the flavour-of-the-month management 'philosophies'.

I worked at Royal Bank of Canada full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    For back office jobs:
    Stable, predictable work environment
    Requires minimal intelligence, quite easy
    Repetitive, manual work
    Lots of paperwork

    Cons

    For back office jobs:
    Boring, can't stress this enough
Terrible pay, hard to make ends meet
Dead end job with no growth opportunities

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Rotate your back office staff, they lose motivation few months after they start.
Tie pay to performance, introduce decent bonuses for good work.
Start paying your staff respectable wages - you are making billions in practically risk free mortgages insured by CMHC and other under the table deals with the central bank and yet your pay is almost minimum wage.
