I worked at Royal Dutch Shell full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Shell looks well after its staff. Attracts smart and well educated people. Very nice offices in The Hague (corp HQ) and Rijswijk (Upstream HQ) with free gym, in-house bank, hair dresser, Shell shop and great staff restaurant. Always travelled bz class and stayed in 4*+ hotels on intercontinental trips.
If you are lucky to get selected, you can get into a long term career system that promotes you at each job change (4 yrs)

    Cons

If you're interested into advancing your career, make sure to join the selected bunch (in Shell terms: L/C or SE potential).
Slow decision making and bureaucratic organization. So better not rock the boat, unless the CEO asks you to.
Anglo-Dutch style of management and culture.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I worked at Royal Dutch Shell as a contractor (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Working for STO (Shell Telecom) before outsourcing the following was apparent.
    - contractors were treated equally and fairly
    - the company was as transparent as it could be about its outsourcing plans
    - fantastic working environment with no differention between contract and perm staff

    Cons

shell doesnt directly hire its contract staff, this is done via agencies, getting a good agency is more thru luck than choice. There are some unscrupelous agenices out there who dont filter the benefits back to its contractors so its worth checking you are getting the best deal from your contract in terms of rate and benefits.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Sadly feel you chose the wrong people to outsource too, looked at the bottom line of costs rather than those which could of brought real value and a realistic price.

I have been working at Royal Dutch Shell full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Shell's business activities are very interesting, it has an open culture, the compensation in the Netherlands is above average, the people that work at Shell are very smart

    Cons

Shell is overly complex, leading to lack of understanding in the organisation of how things work, Shell is very risk averse and lacks a commercial mindset, Shell has difficulty providing the right opportunities to it's talented employees which leaves many people frustrated.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reduce complexity in organisation, take more risk, hold people accountable

I worked at Royal Dutch Shell full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Large programmes with enough complexity to be challenging
Many good people from various organisations.
Truly global company, with people from all over the world and all sorts of culture.
High standards and values, pleasure to work.

    Cons

The large complexity often leads to suboptimal choices, which need realignment later. This leads to situations where direction is being changed often. Its always 3 steps forward and one or two steps backward.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Shell is too complex an environment to provide some off the cough advise.

I have been working at Royal Dutch Shell full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

    - challenges + work are on a high level. Both complexity and intelectually
    - due to the companies size and difersity (business + locations) there are many options

    Cons

    - Size comes with the major "Con" that it is often too slow in decission making. You need to be patient

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

don't care too much about how you are perceived by the mngt layers above you, but engage more with your subordiates and other teams
