Former Employee – worked at Ryder System full-time
Pros – - A Fortune 500 company (well, in the 401-500 range)
Cons – - Career progression is not linked to ability or effort. Talented and hard working people may get stuck at the same level while the least intelligent and the least capable are often promoted (not all the time - there are also some very smart and talented people, especially at the highest levels).
Advice to Senior Management – Upper management should attempt to instill a culture where the most talented employees are identified, developed and promoted. Unfortunately, it sometimes takes a smart person to recognize another one so this may not happen.

Former Employee – worked at Ryder System full-time for more than 7 years
Pros – The office was close to my house and when I started we were able to work from home while on call and once a week.
Cons – My manager was verbally abusive on several occasions. It took four years for my salary to reach the level I was promised prior to starting on a contract to hire basis. The benefits brocure I was sent prior to hiring was out of date. The pension plan in that brocure had been discontinued.

Former Employee – worked at Ryder System full-time for more than a year
Pros – Training is good some of it
Cons – It is like working in the military except there are two sets of rules, one that they publish and one that they do not publish. The unpublished rules are the one's to live by... They say they promote change but, that is not true as there is no vehivle to contribute if your boss is a gate keeper. HR is KNOWN by all the employees as ONLY for the management. Not for the employees. HR goes right to your boss which creates a worse situation or termination. It is a culture of fear.
Advice to Senior Management – I joined for the culture that I was sold: Character, Judgement, Relationships and Results. I was not treated with honesty and I was part of a RIF not because of my skill set but because I was a female and my YOUNGER make boss did not like me. The treatment I was given was horrific at best. A woven set of lies, pushed out and a story was created not based on my results. My boss took credit for everything I did and then RIF ed me. Simply unethical and shameful.

Current Employee – been working at Ryder System full-time for less than a year
Pros – Easy hire for recent Grads.
Cons – High pressure, no training process, low pay, high turnover. Many people come to work and key card has been deactivated without warning.
Advice to Senior Management – Cultivate your people. High turnover causes frustration for customers and individuals who work for you.

Current Employee – been working at Ryder System full-time for more than 3 years
Pros – Good rapport with counterparts and subordinates, however, upper management is more interested in promoting their own agendas as opposed to benefitting the company.
Cons – Upper management cannot be trusted. Complete lack of communication, compulsory unpaid weekend overtime for salaried employees. NO chance for advancement, unless you're a member of the "boys club." Lack of diversity and inclusion, although it is denied naturally. Complete disdain and disrespect for the hourly union workers.
Advice to Senior Management – From the Area Manager level on up, you need to fire and replace every one of these people. They have no regard whatsoever for the Company. This includes your tyrannical HR manager who is not only aware of what's going on, but a participant. They lie, they abuse subordinates, and in the case of some shift managers, they have inappropriate relationships with the hourly employees and fire those who find out about it. When this information is passed along to the HR Manager, he quietly dismisses it and does nothing about it. Someone needs to "police the police" as these people are completely unprofessional.

Former Employee – worked at Ryder System full-time for more than a year
Pros – a check.. but it always different each week as the manager that you had for that week would pay you what they wanted.
Cons – Management lies to you about what you get paid. They tell you that this contract pays this but when you get your check you are paid much less then what they told you. The contracts end abruptly and you are out a job. They have their favorite drivers and they are the ones that make the money. Benefits are terrible.. they change their vacation policy all the time so you never get to take it.
Advice to Senior Management – Stop lying to your drivers.. stand in their shoes and see how you like being lied to all the time. Remember.. what comes around goes around and what you are doing to the drivers will be done to you one day.. !!!

Former Employee – worked at Ryder System part-time for more than 3 years
Pros – I have yet to find one.
Cons – Where to start? I worked at the Beaver Dam plant for the last 4 summers before it was bought out by Ryder. It was a place I definitely could have viewed myself working at for a long time. However, Ryder took over and the company absolutely sucks! They wanted to dock my pay from $12.50/hr to $8.00/hr my fourth year there. Really? You want me to have to work for $4.50 less per hour for working 3rd shift, 7 nights a week all summer? Yea, right. Also, I was laid off because your company STILL INSISTS on hiring inmates and when I was threatened by one he kept his job and I lost mine. I know the local papers would love a story like that.
Advice to Senior Management – Learn how to manage logistics! Because you guys SUCK at it. I could run the company better in my sleep.

Current Employee – been working at Ryder System for more than 7 years
Pros – Almost everyone I have spoken to at corporate hq has been competent as well as friendly. The individuals I have spoken to at corporate hq appear to understand that a happy and healthy work environment is a productive environment. And that the first step towards achieving that goal is accomplished through quality hiring.
Cons – There has been a culture of both neglect and intimidation at the Lansing location for as long as I have been with the company, even the slightest hint of dissent is often met with obstinance or even hostility. Communication with the corporate office seems to be ineffectual do to the way in which information is routed and prioritized. There is little leeway for creative problem solving as most solutions are dictated top down with little to no nuance that would suggest an intimate understanding of total effect. There seems to be a complete lack of understanding among most the on site management staff as to how to empower people in a way that extracts the most productivity from them. The current approach is in no way conducive to long term goals and is bad business.
Advice to Senior Management – Must do a better job of recognizing problems before they grow this large. Periodically evaluate management staffs on a per location basis and in a hands on, non insolated manner, identifying poor managerial approach, competence etc. I believe doing so would result in net gains via retention, eliminating waste improved moral etc.

Current Employee – been working at Ryder System full-time for more than 8 years
Pros – decent pay, nothing else applies
Cons – not enough room here--in a nutshell-- upper management only looks at numbers. if you cheat, fudge numbers, adjust mileages, perform pm on sunday at home (Michigan) , its ok as long as your numbers look good. If you are honest, ethical, not buddies with the maint mgrs. RUN and dont look back. I was told by mechanics that I care too much, and if you care too much at Ryder, you will have nothing but aggrivation. They were right!!!!!
Advice to Senior Management – Let people do their jobs! Most time is taken up with conference calls, meetings, wastes of time that do not beneift the customers. Most of upper mgt is just number readers. They wouldn't survive for a week in a real job. Take a look at why you have so mucch management turnover.
