I have been working at Ryder System

    Pros

Decent work-life balance, good hours, benefits are ok, managers can be understanding

    Cons

Under paid, compared to all other logistics companies, Ryder seems to pay way less. Growth within the company can be at a stand still and when setting a what seemed like completely realistic goal, HR stated it was too aggressive.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize your employees and promote them fairly and timely. Help them advance to the next salary level if they are stuck.

I worked at Ryder System (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Lot's of good people stuck in critical positions without support from management

    Cons

Long hours without any degree of leadership from corporate management. Top management has no three year, five year or ten year plan in place. They manage day by day and those who must get the job done learn quickly they are 100% expendable. Their history of negative sales growth should scare investors to death. Management loves to hire women and minorities however those with talent realize quickly that in order to make a career, they must move on. The HR group is constantly in a state of flux and if the true rate of overall turnover was ever published, it would be impossible to attract quality talent.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Grow up. Get a plan and find a real leader who walks the talk and actually tries to support field efforts. The executive group is full of weak has-beens who hang around for stock options and bonuses while another empty suit does their song and dance routine for Wall Street. Try to actually give those with responsibility and accountability a little authority for a change.

I have been working at Ryder System full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Good benefits, stability, adequate pay, ability to relocate. Some truly good people out there (that are often tarnished by the overwhelming number of bad)

    Cons

Terrible middle management that seems stuck in the 80s. Older management staff that seems threatened by the younger generation. Lower salaries than industry standard. Not enough support personell. Every task or challenge is a trade off. If you want to excel at something then something else will fall to the wayside.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Train and teach rather than be threatened by younger management team. Be more positive. A lot of negativity on a day to day basis. Why have 6 conference calls in one day just to talk about more conference calls?

I have been working at Ryder System full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Plenty of room for advancement if you put your mind to it, though most advancement requires you to move beyond your initial location as managers have favorites.

    Cons

Lack of quality managers and supervisors. Favoritism does come into play though it became less prevalent as the years went on. Lack of emphasis on employee retention. Outside supervisors were brought in rather than promoted from within. Over four years, 7 supervisors came and went with 5 of those being on one shift. No incentive to do more than the bare minimum. Quality of job is dependent on which client Ryder is contracted to at a facility.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Put a focus on employee retention. Lack of raises cause people to find new jobs as they know they will never make more than they do currently. Listen to your employees more. They are the ones on the floor doing the work and understand what is working and what is not. Create incentives for going above and beyond.
