I have been working at Ryman The Stationer part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Staff are very friendly in most stores, the job is well paid if you are only just starting out, flexible shifts/ hours if needed.
The staff i work with are funny friendly kind and thoughtful, we always have a laugh and get on with work at the same time.
You get to meet Theo Paphitis at the Christmas event which is catered and very fun and you get to meet people from different stores.
Tasks are easy and can be more challenging if you ask, also progression from CSA to Senior sales is very easy to get started on and there are also internal opportunities to work with head office which Ryman employees get to see before outsiders.
Training is very in depth and helpful.
from 15% to 30% discount on most store products.

    Cons

    Dealing with finicky customers.
Getting asked daft questions from customers.
Plans are sometimes not accurate and are needed to be adapted sometimes you think have you just thrown things in here for no reason.
Large range of product knowledge is needed from pens to printers and shredders.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take more notice of the suggested lines especially around school projects time lots of customers come in asking for different things we don't sell like colours of card namely brown just simple things that we already sell but would be useful to have a wider range.

    Pros

    Work ethic
    Bonus system
    Parties and work meetings
    Training
    Great customer service
    Opportunity to rise (given training)
Hands on feel by upper management including board level.

    Cons

    It's still retail
Wages aren't high but decent enough

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep doing what you're doing, the hands-on feel to it from upper management is great and it really feels like part of one big team.

I worked at Ryman The Stationer part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The staff i worked with were great and made the job much easier. it was always clear what was expected of me and information about products was always available. It was a nice job to have before I moved away to university.

    Cons

the pay was low for what we were supposed to be doing, the work days were stupid. There was only one day off a year and on plenty of other holidays no one ever seemed to come in.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take things like easter off. It was stupid being open for no one.

I worked at Ryman The Stationer part-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Comprehensive training program for all employees to undertake. Entrusted with alot of important tasks at a young age, and management frequently to update on the status. Targets are set and tracked on a daily basis with chances of bonus for exceeding. Communication with emplpyees is very good.

    Cons

Working in retail in general, wages aren't the best. Footfall falling on a year on year basis. Not a great career path, or many routes to higher things in the immediate future.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Flatter management structure to allow for personal growth within the company. Consider making employees motivated to work rather than just a normal job.

I worked at Ryman The Stationer part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The training was up to date and most employees were easy to get on with

    Cons

Choice of management often ineffective with lazy workers passing on their work to those lower down, unecessarily. (not always the case)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make sure the balance is right. customer service assistants should not be doing the work of managers and management should chip in around the shop. Continue to ensure new employees will fit into the team as this makes a huge difference in how long people stay to work for the company.

    Pros

The general staff a very nice

    Cons

No one really cares, it's all about getting through the day with the least amount of effort

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Speak to staff, learn about how things can be better, treat staff with respect and not just people who do a job. There are lots of good people working there but you refuse to even say hello.
Improve communication to all departments, the management all seem scared of their bosses and try and cover up all the holes and hopes no one sees.

I have been working at Ryman The Stationer

    Pros

    - I recieved training in customer service.

    - The people I worked with were great.

    - Problems within the company were usually dealt with quickly and appropriately.

    - In my three years of working there (starting from 2008) I hadn't heard or seen of anybody being made redundant. Even though a lot of other companies were doing this at that time.

    - I felt safe within my job.

    Cons

    - Pay ( at the time of my working there) was at national minimum wage. Probably the lowest out of most retail positions.

    Pros

Easy, OK Pay. Some really nice people work in the shops.

    Cons

Poor grasp of marketing and behind the times with other things. Really sad or just insane store managers that either live and breath the company (in a bad way) or don't give a damn about anything.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Re brand into something more stylish and stop being so expensive
