Looking to remake itself

Senior Research Engineer (Current Employee)
Racine, WI

I have been working at S.C. Johnson full-time for more than 5 years

ProsSC Johnson has been a family owned company for 5 generations and the current CEO (great great grandson of the founder) is looking to remove the old nepotism habits and run the company the way a good company is run.

ConsLots of old habits - second-guessing manager's decisions, not relying on data to make decisions.

Advice to Senior ManagementPut people into positions to make decisions with clear data and hold them accountable to the intent of their decisions, no the outcome.

A Family Company of Chaos

Associate Brand Manager (Current Employee)
Racine, WI

I have been working at S.C. Johnson full-time for more than a year

ProsStrong brands
High level of responsibility at entry level
Private company enables sustained marketing strategy/support
Laid back culture
Low expectations

ConsWeak talent caliber - does not compare to talent at P&G, General Mills, Kraft, etc. Lifers who have been at company forever impede change/growth.

Lack of strategic thinking / very reactive culture - until things go wrong, no one interested in driving results in marketplace

Location - Racine, WI

Advice to Senior ManagementClean house, remove the weak links and ensure the strong talent is recognized and incented to stay. Be more open to telecommuting/flex policies that enable Chicago talent to want to sustain working at the firm

ProsWork life balance, compensation, cost of living in adjacent area well below national average.

ConsLocation in Racine, leadership doesn't provide clear direction, too much general management, not enough marketing. Passive aggressive culture.

Good work life balance, rural location

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Racine, WI

I have been working at S.C. Johnson

ProsGood work life balance and general respect for its employees. Breadth of responsibilities are wide and the company has strong household brands.

ConsLocation is in a desolate town in Wisconsin. Profit sharing has been sub par in recent years and incentive structures are not always aligned to performance.

Scary, cult like environment

Manager (Current Employee)
Racine, WI

I have been working at S.C. Johnson

ProsGreat for mediocre peformers, no repercussions for incompetence

ConsIncompetent management
Seniority trumps accomplishment
Cult like environment - you have to drink the Kool Aid or you don't fit in
Petty, childish behavior of staff and management, unprofessional work styles
Impossible for new, high performing staff to break in

Advice to Senior ManagementFire long term employees and bring in new blood
Focus more on accomplishment and less on seniority

High performers, stay away!

Manager (Current Employee)
Racine, WI

I have been working at S.C. Johnson

ProsJob security. You can be entirely incompetent and not get fired. Management is so far behind, you will be ahead of them the first day of your hire, so relax and take it easy.

ConsCulture is a quagmire. Incompetent management, CEO relies on old time SCJ people who have no idea how to compete in a modern world. Current senior staff are arrogant, mean, and incredibly ineffective. individual initiative produces punishment. Seniority in SCJ trumps experience, high performers from Fortune 50's should stay away; 10 years in this backward culture will trump 15 years at Proctor or Unilever. Over the top bureaucracy. Performance accounts for nothing in this culture, excellence is irrelevant. If you aren't an old time SCJ person, you're nothing, no matter how talented or smart.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe recent hire of COO is a start. DO NOT promote senior management from within, get talent from outside. But then create an environment where they don't quit within six months, which many of the recent high performing hires have done. Clean house in your management and get talent from outside Racine.

Great Place to work, but limited growth opportunity

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Racine, WI

I have been working at S.C. Johnson

ProsOverall it's a great place to work. The work is challenging and there are no lack of resources to do your job well. Most managers treat employees fairly and the benefits can't be beat. Fisk goes out of his way to do small things to show appreciation like impromptu BBQ's in the summer.

ConsThe promotional opportunities in RD&E are slim once you've hit Sr. Research Engineer. People have worked here a long time (if not thier whole career) and don't realize how truly good they have it here. An outsider might get frustrated hearing people complain about non-issues. Management is pretty far removed from their subordinates.

Advice to Senior ManagementManagement needs to develop a better defined career path to keep people engaged. They also need to dedicate more ttime to their employees (beyond a 1hr general)

SC Johnson

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Racine, WI

I have been working at S.C. Johnson

Pros- Great Group Culture
- Strong growth strategies
-Great Training and Development Programs
-Benefits are great: summer hours, workout center, cafes onsite, etc
-Facility is absolutely beautiful

Cons-Racine is not the best location for younger workers to relocate to and want to start new life at(cold winters, 35+ minutes from Milwaukee, older community, etc)

Advice to Senior Management- I would advise the management to continue to provide excellent mentor options. They are great at tracking your career path and are truly dedicated to helping you succeed.
-Time management and communication is crucial for this leadership
