I worked at S.C. Johnson full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

If you are lucky to be assigned to a great manager you will have many opportunities for advancement. Of course you have to be a high performer just like any where else! There is still an Open door policy to senior leaders that have been with the company for a long time. You are encouraged to talk to the Vice Presidents at any time. There are still some great people who work at the company. Ok environment. The culture is not the same as it has been, but is ok. Average salaries.

    Cons

No consistent career path in the company. It depends on the support of your current manager. Most move up and out due to poor leadership and the change in culture. HR runs very fragmented, what is done for one division or group of people as far as development may not be the case for others who are equally talented and high performers. It creates frustration and great talent leaves the company. It is clear that the owner wants the culture to change from what his father and grandfathers developed. New leaders are in place that don't care about the best parts of our old culture. Lots of negative employes that are not happy because of the drastic culture changes happening.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communicate to the people who are left in the company what the next steps are. It can be hard for employees to be hopeful when they are doing the job of 2 to 4 people with no end in sight for change. HR should be consistent with administering policies and procedures when it comes to promotions, development, education, disciplinary processes. Help remaining employees understand the next steps in the company so they can have hope it is going to get back to being a great place to work!

I worked at S.C. Johnson full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

It used to be a good company, but not any more since top management tried to "Transformation" the company.

    Cons

There always a rumor Johnson family will sell this company soon. Not a company you can stay for longer as before. It's o.k. if you just to stay 3-5 years for gaining experience.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't destroy the company and lots of good people working there.

    SC Johnson...A not-so "family company"

I worked at S.C. Johnson full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Some of the perks: tuition reimbursement, generous paid holiday break (between Xmas and New Years), 1/2 day Fridays in the summer, Company resort in Minocqua, WI, Company match on 401K up to 6%, profit sharing 2x/year, discounted product at the company store, top-notch child care center and Rec Center w/pool.

    Cons

Senior management is way REACTIVE instead of PROACTIVE. This caused last-minute decisions and a snowball effect of changes. Strategy seems to be lacking.

The CEO (Fisk) is more concerned with the outward appearance of the campus, and business mergers and acquisitions than he is about the people of the company. His father, Sam Johnson (who is most likely rolling over in his grave), made SC Johnson the best place to work by taking care of his employees as if they were members of his own family.

The direction the company has been moving in the past 5 years is a far cry from upwards... the employees are unhappy and scared and they walk around like zombies because they're over-tired, over-worked and under-appreciated. If Fisk would have quit spending money on cafeterias with airplanes built inside, and remodeling the research tower, he might not have had to lay off as many people as he did.

Also - it's impossible to advance at this company (even though they paid for my education), HR is basically useless as an advocate or mentor and they all communicate with the employees like robots, it also took weeks to get answers back from HR on anything (very slow moving).

Salary is competitive but nothing to brag about, insurance is SUPER expensive, On-site cafeteria is beautiful to look at but the food leaves much to be desired and is way over priced, daycare is amazing but very expensive.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take chances on some of your employees who have a desire to grow and advance, be human (in HUMAN resources), take a break from mergers and acquisitions and try rewarding your employees for all their hard work with a REAL raise (not the meager 2.6%) or at the very least, public recognition.

I have been working at S.C. Johnson full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Great work-life balance. SCJ provides opportunities for telecommuting, personal development, and personal time off. SCJ even offers company paid time off between Christmas and New Year's Day. There are different internal divisions to rotate to within the company to gain additional exposure/experience. Also the salary and benefits are good.

    Cons

If you have 15 yrs to waste waiting for your next promotion, and you don't mind seeing the carrot moved away constantly, then this is the place for you. The ceiling is quite high to be considered for even an entry level managerial positions. Promotions take extremely a long time regardless of your accomplishements, qualifications, and devotion. Management is handcuffed and not empowered to make decisions on promotions contrary to what you hear. It is disappointing that track record doesn't play a role. They're looking for perfection that doesn't exist. Sometimes personal favoritisms get in the way and deny you an otherwise great fit at an open position. I wonder if it doesn't make sense to leave and come back to break through the glass ceiling. It's like waiting to turn left at a very long traffic light. It is faster to turn right, do a U-turn, and head on your way.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be brave, take a stand and put more trust in your aspiring reports even if you think they're not 100% ready. Think back, did you have all the required skills and checked ALL the boxes to fill your next position? Surely not. Change that attitude. If you're looking for perfection, it doesn't exist. So stop wasting time or finding excuses.

I worked at S.C. Johnson full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

People you will work with are very easy to get along with and the company has some nice perks including generous time off for paternity leave and a company owned resort that you are allowed to utilize. In terms of pay many positions are at or above market level and in most years there is profit sharing. The company takes part in a lot of activities to improve the overall general welfare of the community (back packs with school supplies for school children, Earth day clean up, etc).

    Cons

The company culture has changed dramatically over the last five years from one that was focused on people and relationships to one that seems to be a carbon copy of other large consumer products companies. Many managers and senior level leaders were brought in from the outside which has resulted in many talented people that built the company being pushed aside, let go, taking early retirement or leaving the company out of overall frustration. The company is currently going through a restructuring that is still in process.
