    Pros

Many job openings now. Reasonable salaries & benefits, especially for people with children-- insurance, maternity & paternity leave, childcare, summer daycamp, swimming lessons & recreational swimming, exercise, sports & other activities.

    Cons

Fast pace of change in past few years, many new systems & procedures, loss of many experienced employees due to involuntary layoffs as well as voluntary departures & retirements.

    Advice to Management

Coach & develop. Support your staff. Listen to them. Take responsibility for problems, which are often due to inexperienced employees or not enough staff.

    Pros

Intelligent and hard working people who care about their results and impact on others.

    Cons

Changing environment that now values outside hires over internal candidates, limiting longer term employees opportunity to grow. The current unspoken message is that employees that have been with SCJ for a while are no longer of value and will likely be mostly exited from the company in the next 1-3 years.

    Advice to Management

Recommend considering the institutional knowledge, experience and capabilities of your longer term employees as an asset to the company. Engage in a more balanced approach to talent management by hiring some people from the outside, while inspiring and promoting the longer term employees that are loyal and performing.

    Pros

As a former employee of more than 10 years I was proud to be a part of the organization at least for the first 7 years. The company culture was supportive, relationship based, strong ethical values and beliefs that included employee benefits, work-live balance and profit sharing.

    Cons

The last 3 years the company has gone through significant transformation in my opinion for the strengthening of profits. Plant closures, relocation of work force from the US to lower paying Asian and South American shared service centers. Large workforce reductions and outsourcing of labor which prior to the current CEO never occurred at this company, even during the depression era. Vast amounts of knowledge walking out the door, either by choice or not for other opportunities with good companies. The "transformation" of the company creating an almost hostile and corrosive culture and not one I would work in long term. Work-life balance went out the door as well with the expectation of US resources to work and be available 24/7 to support the less flexible other global regions.

    Advice to Management

Believing that there is no knowledge or capability internally where you have to hire senior management externally at an alarming rate is a serious mistake and one you will regret long-term. The loyalty that the "family" workforce had is quickly fading and not something that can be restored.

    Pros

    Cons

layoffs happen, location limits options when they do. Advice for others - - treat this like any other large CPG, don't buy the 'family company' line, you are a cog in the machine, I got fooled.

    Pros

    1. Great and capable people
    2. Company's history

    Cons

For five generations SC Johnson has been kept as private enterprise. Every generation has made personal sacrifices in the name of the keeping the Company a family household. From the entrepreneurship of Samuel Curtis, to the innovation of HF Johnson and the business savviness of Samuel C. Johnson. Unfortunately, the current generation has lost his direction. Excessive greed and needs for profits have derailed the spirit of this once Great Company to work. I was privileged to see the great work of people that take it to top 10 Companies to work for 10 years in a row. For the last 7 years, the Company has slide out of the rank. Talented people left for fighting a transformation to shrink value in exchange for short term profits. If you want to transform a Company, replace its management. And so they did. In the process, they have lost engagement, discretionary effort and trust.

I do appreciate all 15 years I spent at SCJ. I learned from great leaders, I traveled the word and I did my best to contribute. Unfortunately, that's not the Company SCJ is anymore.
