    Pros

The pay and profit sharing is about all that remains at this company that is good. Staff that works days and management get unlimited sick time.
If you enjoy being constantly hounded to do more everyday and be put on projects that need to be completed in an amount of time that is not really feasible, love paperwork and forms, like to spend time in meetings, this is the place for you.

    Cons

New "Lean" program is killing this company. Moral is at its lowest in 20 years. Since the lean "transformation" this company is losing excellent, experienced people because of all the extra, and senseless work they are demanding from its employees.
Slow to hire people in key positions so constantly running short is a big problem causing big time burn out. Management does not care about its employees anymore. Since Sam died, the company has been on a downward spiral. Work life balance may exist if you are a day staff person, or management but if you are in manufacturing plant, forget it.
Between all the "lean" tools that are supposed to make our job easier, you have loaded your staff with so much "garbage" to do and paperwork that we have no time to concentrate on the job we were hired to do.

Unless you have a degree, forget moving up in this company. They won't even look at you for a promotion to even the most menial day position unless you have a degree.

    Advice to Management

Try to listen to the "little people" who are on the floor and know the machinery, who know what may work and what may not. Just because something looks good on paper does not mean its going to work on the aging equipment that we have to work with. Managers need to stop treating employees like little kids and more like adults with a brain.

    Pros

SCJ has great brands and benchmarks itself to offer competitive benefits. Some, like cash profit sharing, are not common in public CPG companies. The company is learning to operate globally so international travel and relocation are possible, depending on business function.

    Cons

A recent transformation has made the organization much more slim and flat, so there aren't many upward advancement opportunities (still are many lateral possibilities however). Also there is much more "do more with less" mentality that is causing some burnout. World class business doesn't always have world class tools or people. Finally, most new leadership has come in from outside so the company is losing some of its family feel to stay competitive. This could be a pro or a con, still to be determined.

    Advice to Management

    Listen to the "little people"

    Pros

Family company. Has health fitness centers, great cafe. Offers competitive benefits. Has child care center. A lot of opportunity does exist in the company to make a difference.

    Cons

Moving away from previous culture to stay more competitive....more like other companies. As reported in the news, many employees are being let go as company transforms itself. Moving more towards a performance orientated culture which can affect work life balance.

    Advice to Management

    Value employees

    Pros

Benefits are good, but changing. Very good work life balance.
Great collegues and culture of helping each other.

    Cons

Currently undergoing restructuring, and company culture is being seriously impacted. Not the same place to work as in the past. Very little structure, seems that work get done by whom you know. Some leaders are going from 30,000 ft level to -10 ft, which paralyzes the organization and results in trust issues.

    Advice to Management

Stop micro management, allow leaders to lead and delegate.

    Pros

-great work life balance (telcommuting, summer hours, sabbatical program, etc)
-Opportunities for career advancement - you manage your own career and it's important to be recognized as a high performer, build relationships, and assert yourself. If you do this, there are great opportunities
    -good perks for employees

    Cons

-location (Racine, WI) - you may want to live in Milwaukee or Chicago, in which case you'll have a minimum of 45 minute commute
-risk-averse culture (this is getting better, but there is a long way to go)
-salaries are average, bonus structure is less than competitive

    Pros

Telecommuting, flex-scheduling, summer hours, vacation buy-back

    Cons

"type-casting"...once you excel at something it's near impossible to break out of that role
Management does little to hold people accountable. They just let people slide because they have worked there a long time.

    Pros

Pay is competitive. Environment is supportive, informal, friendly. Management accepts a broad range of work styles. Lots of opportunities to be recognized and to make an impact on the business. Work-life balance is about right for married folks. Supportive of volunteer work in the community. Great and interesting campus buildings. Extensive employee extracurricular activities available.

    Cons

Slow promotion progression is the usual with somewhat limited opportunities. Quality of management, long range planning, and sharing is spotty. Culture is significantly tribal.

    Pros

Stable well known brands make up this company's core portfolio. They are privately held. Convenient location for those in south eastern Wisconsin. Flexible hours and okay pay for this area. The daycare is pricey but the services they provide are a life saver to working parents.

    Cons

Currently going through downsizing and 300+ people will be let go in Racine alone. Headquarters are located in a city with the highest unemployment rate in Wisconsin. Benefits are being sacrificed to save money. Employees used to be valued but this mindset has changed dramatically in the past 10 months. It is not about what you know but who you know. It is no longer the family company of their tagline. The mighty dollar is more important than employees and the community. Right now the company is in disorganization.

    Advice to Management

Go back to the core values of This We Believe. You should have worked on leaning the organization and cutting staff after implementing changes to make the organization more efficient. Instead heads are being cut to cut heads and charging those remaining with figuring out how to make it work in the aftermath. The employees make a company great.
