I worked at S.C. Johnson full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Work-life balance. In most cases, decision-making was pushed down to the level where it mattered most. Resources needed to do the job were always made available. Frequent opportunity to interact with Sr. Mgmt. Sr. Mgmt. was very open to employee input.

    Cons

HR at SCJ (like most companies) is a joke. They talk the game of being concerned about employees very well, but HR never actually walks the walk. Too many first-to-market opportunities are lost by too much emphasis on getting products to "perfection." Too many times, competitors have gotten to market first and locked up the biggest market share because SCJ was too busy pursuing a small potential point of superiority.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

One of the most successful CEOs in the company's history did a lot of "managing by walking around." Current Sr. Mgmt. needs to get out of their offices and meeting rooms and do more of that. They'll gain a better understanding of what's going on in their company if they do that.

    Pros

Very good benefits and salary. Employees all seem to get along as well as a very easygoing workplace.

    Cons

In order to get desired promotions you need to have relationships with the right people. Sometimes have to travel quite often.

I worked at S.C. Johnson full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

To be honest the only pros here are that the pay is pretty good and profit sharing is nice.

    Cons

Older workers doing bare minimum while getting paid high salary. Good workers get rewarded with more work and bad workers get less work (but still get raises & etc). Not organized. Poor work/life balance with the norm working 10 hours/day. Culture is changing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give everyone an equal opportunity instead of having selected "chosen ones" to move upward.

    Pros

Excellent benefits, good work/life balance, opportunity for advancement, the company operates in many categories so it was a great chance to learn several different business models

    Cons

I have been working at S.C. Johnson full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

People are friendly. The company is family-oriented and still privately held. The work-load is reasonable. They offer great concierge service.

    Cons

Company values longevity over pretty much anything else. People have been around forever, and there's not a lot of influx of new talent. There's very little career growth or opportunity. I do not recommend coming here if you are actively building your career.
