I worked at S.C. Johnson as a contractor for less than a year

    Pros

The leadership with whom I worked was confident in their selection of me, therefore, when I made recommendations that were in the best interest of the organization, they implemented change. The review of the SWOT analysis was efficient, thereby realizing (close to) immediate benefit by the implementation of change in a most timely manner.

    Cons

The con I experienced was with the recruiting company & the way they handled the financial aspect of the opportunity.

I didn't really have any bad experiences with SC Johnson aside from consulting work that led me to live in WI during the winter months.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay closer attention to what is happening when you contract with a recruiting company for consultants / contractors.

I have been working at S.C. Johnson full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Employee discount, profit sharing and profit sharing break. Flexible work schedule and telecommuting opportunities for office employees with the right manager (not available in all departments).

    Cons

Little, if any, room for career growth unless you are visible to the right people. Inconsistent feedback with regards to promotional opportunities. If you have the education you will be told you lack internal experience and if you have internal experience you will be told you lack education. However, depending on the employee, you could have both and still not be properly compensated for your achievements.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize the skills of people within the organization and re-evaluate that you have the right people doing the right jobs. It isn't always necessary to utilize retirees as consultants if the current employees are utilized to their full potential.

    Pros

Great benefits & good compensation. Great brands make an stable company to work. Private company so they do not need to worry about dividends for Wall Street.

    Cons

Headquarters located in Midwest (you must like cold weather). Company going under reorganization so lot of changes on their way that could modify the old company values.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Certain HR modifications will have to happen if you want to Lean out the organization.

I have been working at S.C. Johnson full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    -Decent pay

-Sales perks: bonus, company car, ipad, cell phone reimbursement, field sales has flexible work hours and environment

-Most people at corporate are very friendly - it's easy to find a group of people to get along with and that have similar interests to you

-Nice recent upgrades to corporate campus

-Company makes an effort to reduce waste, energy used and protect the environment

-While not every function receives a bonus, all do receive profit sharing twice a year

-Milwaukee and Chicago are nice options for living if you don't want to live in Racine, WI (there's nothing there)

-Sales account management jobs are pretty easy, especially for the money and level of education required (bachelor's degree from any school will do and you do not have to be too smart, just a good talker)

    Cons

-Entitlement and laziness rampant in sales - no one thinks they are compensated enough and everyone wants less work to do - people need a reality check that they are getting paid very well for the work they are doing

-Dysfunctional relationship between sales account management and category analysts - unnecessary tension on teams because Category Analysts are directed by their upper management to not interact with the sales team even though they are working with the same retailer in the same office

-Category analysts appear to have no flexibility to make their own decisions and are very controlled, many seem unhappy in this environment but scared to speak up about their concerns

-Account Managers have goals, but there isn't much punishment for not achieving objectives, it takes years for the company to fire someone who is clearly under performing - if a manager likes you and you are not hitting your objectives you can still be promoted - very relationship based company

-There are people getting paid six figures in sales that manage a budget that can't do basic math - as basic as calculating margin or being able to find the divide sign on the keyboard - this leads to a very frustrating work environment

-Many people 35 and older are resistant to technology changes being implemented - instead of being required to adapt or learn new skills, these older employees are being given younger employees to do their work for them

-Majority of promotions, recognition, etc are based on politics - lots and lots of company politics - if you don't play the "political game" you won't get anywhere

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

People with loudest voices are often the most praised and promoted (in sales). For a realistic view on people's performance, try getting peer, cross functional and upward feedback on employees, you'll likely find that "high potential" employees who talk a lot lack real substance and there are other people getting their work done behind the scenes. This is probably one of the main reasons why so many talented, smart people are constantly quitting.

    Pros

    Summer Hours
    not much else

    Cons

Cult like - want you to buy into "great company"...drink the kool aid
Only hire from outside for key positions
Clueless on how to run a large multi-national
Promotions based on who you know not what you know
Long term employees no longer valued

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remember what got you to great companies to work for...long term dedicated employees. Not VP's passing by
