I have been working at S.P. Richards as a contractor

    Pros

I started as a contractor at S.P. Richards three months ago. The culture has really exceeded my expectations. It took me less than a week to recognize how laid back and close the IT department is here. I've always stereotypically associated people that worked in IT to be a little dry and very introverted and that simply wasn't the case here. Everyone has been welcoming, friendly, and helpful. The employees at S.P. Richards genuinely value both the company and each other. Thankful to be here.

    Cons

The only thing that I'd really consider negative would be the repetitive work. Everything else is extremely petty. It can be difficult to find parking some days and they really need to restock the soda machine on this floor!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Every single manager in the IT department has been kind and approachable. It's not difficult to perceive how much you all genuinely care and value your employees.

Old headquarters management taking fat paychecks for themselves. But, they are not current with the state of industry.

I have been working at S.P. Richards full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    401K, nice people meaning well.

    Cons

Poor management in a company that is not current with its competition. They are concerned with margins and not top line sales which is where the rest of the grunts earn their living.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Retire some of the old folks at HQ and get some generation X managers.

So close to 5 stars, but....

I have been working at S.P. Richards

    Pros

    SPR People are awesome!
Stable, conservative and financially strong company with good benefits, moderate freedom to take ownership of a job and seek best career path. Fairly diverse business model, with parent and sister companies that offer some additional connections for future growth. Great B2B reputation and within the community.

    Cons

Lack of support to cultivate, reward and/or incentivize great employees which creates a culture of demotivated employees. Efforts being made to address are sporadic and a bit slow- often feeling more reactive instead of feeling proactive. Not exactly forward thinking when it comes to family, but nothing extreme or dark ages either. To some extent "family friendliness" or "flexibility" varies by department and manager... and of course, the employee. SPR has been slow to even consider looking for new footing on safe ground for any kind of "official" policy changes in this arena.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change things up internally. At SPR customers are treated like royalty; vendors are treated like old friends. As for employees... well, they are treated more like tools- useful in achieving results on a given task, but not part of any overall success. There's a company culture of doing things simply because "that's what we've always done". Sort of a running joke between employees that value growth and new opportunities. Continue work to remove the CYA leadership culture which seems to limit or dumb-down job requirements to match abilities of that of the lowest common denominator. Often managers feel they will be prevented from replacing a weak performer once the position is vacant.

I have been working at S.P. Richards full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The company is financially secure and business is on the uptick. There is a feeling of genuine concern from Executive leadership team. Good benefits. Has strong ties to owner Genuine Parts. Overall, this a good company to work for and it's very stable.

    Cons

Leadership needs to do a better job of communicating core strategies to all employees. There is not a lot of room for advancement unless you're in sales.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There needs a better way of developing subordinates rather than promoting the same folks over and over.

    Pros

Pay was great. Raises used to be great but I heard that they cut back on the raises. They would cater once in a while.

    Cons

Management cared too much about the quota and not enough about the workers. Over work you but will not give you overtime or help you out with emergencies.

    Pros

The people are friendly and nice, great working environment. Flexible work schedule.

    Pros

Good for college students who need cash

    Cons

very very very quiet and absolutely no team work or any type of socializing what so ever. Usually jobs like these, most people won't last because its flat boring. Yes there are boring jobs, but fun co-workers balance out the lame work. This job does not have that, just drones who can't even speak English.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you are going to have a positive workplace, maybe hire people who understand English.
