If You Like Working In Call Centers, this is the Company to Work For

    I worked at S&P Data

    Pros

I worked in several different departments selling DIRECTV to homes and businesses for over a year at the Cleveland office. It is a very fun atmosphere with managers and coworkers that are always there for you. The pay is very lucrative, especially at DIRECTV for Business, where you can reasonably expect to earn $35k-$40k per year. Top earnings potential in the Commercial Division is about $60k and you are looking at about $30k on the low end if you don't meet your GCR (quota) regularly.

You also get free DIRECTV at your home (almost all channels and sports packages included) and there are a lot of prizes you can earn on a weekly basis.

DIRECTV service is not a hard product to sell- if you talk to 5 businesses, an average sales rep will close three of them.

They are reasonably flexible if you need time off, especially if you can find someone to cover your shift.

In my opinion, the best part of the position is the sales experience and training you receive. You will have about 10 sales conversations per day, so your closing skills, objection handling, rapport building, and other sales skills will improve dramatically. If you are looking for a career in sales, this is invaluable experience that you can take with you for the rest of your life.

    Cons

Having a quota can be pretty scary, especially when not all of the factors are under your control. You are judged by how many sales you generate versus the number of calls you have taken, even if some calls were from current customers who are not looking for new service. Management does try to make sure that you meet your quota, but it isn't uncommon for agents to miss it, which results in not earning commission for that two week pay period.

You are also required to give accurate quotes to the cent, which sounds easy, but DIRECTV's pricing structure is confusing, and you have to calculate all prices using a calculator (computer doesn't do it for you). It isn't difficult to make a pricing mistake, and if you are caught giving a price even one cent off, you will lose your commission for that pay period. If you make 2 or 3 such mistakes in a 90 day period, you can be terminated. This will also cause you stress.

The managers are overworked and do not have as much time to help you improve your sales. You will receive lots of informal sales training from peers, and if you are open and coachable, it wil do wonders for your success there and in the future.

There are no benefits other than free DIRECTV. On paper, you do receive PTO, but it is structured in a way to disincentive you from actually taking time off. Your recruiter or HR might say they are working on providing health insurance. I heard that before I started working there, and they were still dangling that carrot when I left a year later. Don't plan on having health insurance at all.

There is also a lot of pressure to perform, and management will encourage you to come close to crossing moral boundaries. If you like to be completely open and honest about all positives and negatives of the service you are selling, you won't be discouraged from doing so, and can expect reasonable sales success. Undoubtedly, though, most agents do become desensitized to previously held moral beliefs, and this position will corrupt you to some extent.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

We need more sales coaching from team leads. I only received 3 coaching sessions in the entire year I was there (one was in training), though our team leads will lead you to belive we receive 2 coaching sessions per week.

    Pros

The downtown location to many would be a pro but it wasn't for me. There was no cheap parking lots nearby and I had to take public transportation, which I hate, for the first time in years.

    Cons

No benefits. A paltry $8 an hour for three weeks of training then once on the sales floor they bump you to $10. Yippee!
You can make a ton of sales during a two week pay period and not get any bonus if your numbers are not at a certain level or if you auto fell--say something during the call that is erroneous or fail to read a verbatim on the script. Two auto fells in a year and you're terminated. The most you can make on a sale is $10 or nothing (if stats are low). No benefits. No vacation time. You have to work either a Saturday or Sunday and will never have two days in a row off. Your shift can change without notice and does. Though you're there for 80 hours your pay for a two period will never add up to 80 hours. You have to pay for your headset ($80) and $3.00 for a little flimsy luggage lock for your locker. Headsets are stolen all the time. Only Direct TV price grids, etc. are permitted at your work station. No coats, purses, pens or paper are allowed. Cellphones are not allowed on the floor and are to be turned off but most keep them in their pockets and off. You can use them in designated areas but just having it out on the call center floor is instant termination.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Quit treating employees like numbers and start treating them like people or else the churn will continue to set new records. You don't pay nearly enough for all the hoops people have to jump through.

    Pros

The training is extensive and the training staff is very accommodating. It is an excellent place to gain experience for the entry level candidates.

    Cons

For the more experienced employee it may not fulfill career goals. My pay was consistently inaccurate and i am still waiting to receive $76.00 in pay that I am yet to .

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The work life balance is manageable. However accountability in management is very lax. For the professional this company leaves much to be desired.

    Pros

    Nice people - Nice Bonuses

    Cons

poor management, lack of leadership - anything to take your bonus away - Very Strict when dealing with Directv - Directv is main client so anything they say goes no matter how much SP DATA likes you as an employee they will try to hide you by switching your employee ID however when they find your still there you WILL be removed from the campaign and moved to either Comcast or Direct energy (neither as good paying as DTV)

    Pros

If you want to just have a fun job, a job where there is no integrity and no actual expectations or ethics....it is super sad that this pace hires people expecting integrity and then end up requesting you actually compromise it.
This is for people with no moral values, no ethics, no responsibilities either....young/single/immature/unethical folks.

    Cons

Is by seniority, you must bid for hours but your bid is not even considered, they make sure you do not bonus...hit you on your call quality or find any other excuse t make sure you cannot bonus.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

This location needs a whole new team...from the bottom up, consider actually hiring Honest people with integrity. The people in charge now will lie to customers to sell only to make $5.00 bonus for every sale.
THERE IS NO INTEGRITY IN HERE...IT IS PREACHED, NOT WALKED-FROM THE TOP DOWN TO THE BOTTOM...
ONLY TRASHY/ LYING/ SNITCHES/ RUDE/SELFISH/BROWN NOSING FOLKS MAKE IT IN HERE AND GET PROMOTED
