Nice salary and work life balance!

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Frederick, MD

ProsSalary and bonuses are competitve for the position. Direct management (and 1 level up) are very proactive in work life balance. Telework 2 days/week for good staff. Stable environment due to strong government contracting. Opportunities for getting into other types of work are good if you'd like to get into proposals, management (project and program). IT strong.

ConsDepending on your niche, promotions (if that's what you're after) are hard to come by. Senior management (3-6 levels) may not always know what you do and getting into interesting commercial work is essentially non-existant. Even though it's an IT company, satellite sites (under 250 people) don't get their own IT staff which can cause delays in fixing computer issues if you're not as saavy as others.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe up front with why things aren't moving and/or why promotions aren't coming. Find a business development leader who knows commercial work and definitely adopt more a separate model for commerical business. Fitting government requiremens to a fast pasted environment will never work.

SAIC is a great place to start, but you're wasting your time if you hang around too long.

Research Technician (Current Employee) Frederick, MD

ProsA great place to get started at right out of college. Pay is very competitive at entry levels and job security is high.

ConsDon't plan to make a career here though because promotions do not happen here. Get your 1-2 years of lab experience and look elsewhere if you want to make more money or run your own lab.

Advice to Senior ManagementSenior management is not involved enough to make accurate performance judgments. They aren't "in the trenches" so to speak and have very little idea of what is going on below them.

You get what you put in. Hard work is rewarded.

Associate Scientist (Current Employee) Frederick, MD

ProsLots of diversity (new graduates working beside career employees) and lots of opportunity for continued education (seminars, workshops, classes, tuition).

ConsThere are a lot of career employees without vision or drive who like to gossip about being required to actually produce for their pay. However, I have found the compensation to be above the norm for the area and my coworkers, managers, HR, and senior management to be very supportive, involved and fair.

Advice to Senior ManagementTry to re-engage the career employees who have forgotten what putting your nose to grindstone means...get rid of watercooler mentality. Get people talking! One suggestion to try is to have a column in the newsletter just for "man on the street" discussions. If you want to know what employees are talking about or worried about, you have to ask.

Decent pay, lousy benefits and middle management.

Research Scientist (Current Employee) Frederick, MD

    ProsDecent Salary, good coworker atmosphere.

ConsLousy, highly political middle management, with little to no qualifications. All song and dance, zero substance. Scratch the surface of their vast expertise, and there is nothing there. Managers are very good at sales pitches, and very poor on the technical side. They guarantee delivery of the moon, setting unreasonable client expectations. This ultimately results in renegotiation of deliverables after the contract has already been awarded. If you look through SAIC history, this is a very, very common scenario.

Advice to Senior ManagementHire qualified people for project management, with demonstrated real world experience, that junior employees who actually do the work can look up to. The status quo of moving SAIC senior management from position to position, without any regard for credentials, is destroying SAIC's reputation.
