Pros
The opportunities for advancement are numerous and they can come at a moments notice. I was an Overnight Merchandiser 4 months ago. Since then I was promoted to a day shift Team Lead position and now I am in the running to become an Asset Protection Manager!
Cons
Retail Hours! If you can't handle working a constant ever changing mixture of opening, closing, mid, and weekend shifts, do not even bother applying. The stress levels in retail are also very high around the holidays.
Pros
Fairly flexible work schedule. Like anywhere you have some great managers and some not so great. If you prove yourself it's easy to get promoted.
Cons
Bad management (just a few not the whole team)
Not always guaranteed hours if you are part time
Advice to Senior Management
Get the right people in the right positions and things will run smooth as butter.
Pros
Steady employment, stable company. They seem to have clubs open everywhere so they are doing some things right.
Cons
Attocious work conditions, promotions based upon politics and not on merit, little thought to work/life balance.
Pros
Fellow associates were very pleasant and helpful to work around. Great benefits. Good medical plan. Helpful Human Resources department.
Cons
Hours, working environment, lack of respect from customers.
Pros
Good management salary, great associates, great customers and vendors..Safe environment to work in,adiquate staffing levels and enough payroll to get the job done.
Cons
Very disrespectful upper management leadership. CEO disconnected from the stores and does not have a clear direction in which he wants to take the company.
Advice to Senior Management
keep doing what you are doing that way Costco can completely dominate the industry
Pros
decent pay, they usually seem to try and move you rather than let you go, and try and see if you just need to get moved to another area for a better fit, which is more than i can say for other jobs.
Cons
What is so hard about printing a dang employee handbook? or even posting what the typical standard duties are and the way they want you to do things. Typical he said she said stuff too
Advice to Senior Management
stop keeping what you want done a freakin secret and maybe you'll get it done more often.
Pros
the costomers are always great
Cons
lacks in management, no overtime.
Advice to Senior Management
listen and talk to your employees.
Pros
Allowed for experience to qualify for better jobs, driving a forklift is fun as well. Ok incentives for being accident free.
Cons
Terrible pay, awful benefits, idiotic management, no merit based raises, in fact barely any raises. Only opportunity to move up is to change locations.
Advice to Senior Management
Lead by example, you have to earn the respect of your employees, you cannot just demand it. Poor communication between managers, and severely understaffed
Pros
Starting pay is really good and there are many opportunities to move up as long as you don't have a coaching.
Cons
They force us to force members to sign up for a sams club credit card and to upgrade to their plus membership. There is alot of heavy lifting involved in being a cashier you will be lifting items 50lbs and up because they make you 100% transfer. Door greeters give cashiers door audits which lead to cashiers getting fired. Their expectations of us are way too high.
Advice to Senior Management
Set more realistic standards for your employees and treat your cashiers with more respect because they have the most stressful and difficult job in the whole entire store. Theyre the ones doing all the hard work for you.
Pros
Bonuses even for hourly employees, flexible hours, friendly staff, positive work environment, opportunities to change positions, opportunities for advancement, holiday pay even when you don't work on holidays double pay when you do, free food all the time, scholarship program for students, high pay relative to other retail positions
Cons
Poor health benefits package, advancing to a management position or higher is difficult, chronically understaffed, stressful when store is busy and there aren't enough employees, all floor associates have to take turns going on register when cashiers don't show up for work, constantly badgered about selling plus memberships
Advice to Senior Management
Hire more reliable cashiers, keep the store better staffed, improve communication to all employees, stay calm at all times, shut up about plus
