Pros
This is a very ethical, family oriented company that is well managed and is one of the leaders in our industry. With few exceptions, access to management and important information about the company is easily available.
Cons
We are sometimes a little too conservative causing decisions not always being made in a timely manner and those delays can be costly.
Advice to Senior Management
Continue to make sure that our SACRED values are being followed all the time by everyone in all levels of management
Pros
Close to where I live, Benefits are nice, People are friendly, Campus is amazing, lots of people who know what they are talking about. Just as many who don't though.
Cons
Low pay for position, hard to advance, generally speaking people aren't motivated to get things done, hard to get things done in a timely manner.
Advice to Senior Management
Why is change so slow there, should be easier to make changes.
Pros
Job stability, average pay, basic retirement
Cons
There is a good old boy enviroment
Advice to Senior Management
Take a look at your turnover
Pros
Scana has great beneifts, if you contribute the max match to the 401K the company will match 6% and than they also give an additioanl 5% to another retirmenet program, for a total of 11% to the employee
Cons
The knowledge does not necessarily translate outside of the industry, so if you want to leave, you are stuck in the same job field.
Advice to Senior Management
I have no real advice for management at this time. They do a pretty decent job at managing the company.
Pros
SCANA is overall a great place to work. It has great benefits. The education reimbursement program is great also.
Cons
The atmosphere is quite traditional and old fashion, however. There are a lot of older people that work there that are basically waiting to retire. They don't care about producing good work. It's very traditional.
Advice to Senior Management
Management tolerates employees who do not perform or have other employee issues. It causes low morale in certain departments and it seems as though the people that cause the problems don't suffer any consequences.
Pros
good pay on the whole for a company, benefits are good, most coworkers are good to be around and work with
Cons
bad management in the customer support area want everyone to make adjustments and not clearly communicate what they are until they are ready to fire you then all the sudden they can sit and explain it to you. The Customer Service dept is the only poorly run department in the business, if you're seeking employment in other areas you should be okay!
Advice to Senior Management
Shake up the current customer service management, there are some bad apples in there that are ruining the atmosphere, and making it an unhappy place to work.
Pros
The ony thing is that it's a stable company and you can work there forever if you can tolorate management.
Cons
No career advancement or opportunities. No raises in 2 years.
Advice to Senior Management
Take care your people. Don't continue to overwork them and not give them raises.
Pros
Job security and benefits are the best things about this place. You don't have to worry about this place going anywhere since it's a utility and benefits are probably on par with every other major company in this area.
Cons
There is no opportunity for advancement. They play politics with your career. If you want to advance in this company, it's probably better to get a higher level job somewhere else and then come back to SCANA. Lots of people have done it this way. It's not really a bad job as far as atmosphere. It can be laid back and the people are okay, but when you are young, trying to marry and start a family, the pockets can really begin to hurt a little when you can't get a promotion even after doing everything they ask of you and more. I even tried to apply for a higher level position within the company and was told I could not even get the advancement I wanted that way. HR said it was a "lateral move".
Advice to Senior Management
I would ask that they keep the politics out of the workplace. Don't say that it's a recession and there will be a salary/hiring/promotion freeze and then promote several of your best buds in the executive management level.
Pros
Money and facilities are above average
Cons
Employees are more focused on self than the team. Mean spirited managers that are not friendly at all and are very class conscious.
Advice to Senior Management
Knock the chip off your shoulder, we all work for the same goal.
Pros
It can eventually open up a lot of doors within the company. Pay attention, work hard, do things right, take advantage of opportunities. You'll be able to move. It may not be the fastest move, but it will be something. You will learn, grow, and eventually get there. When you do you will have a good foundation to stand on.
Cons
They demand a lot of you. They can be forgiving, but they watch everything. They will judge, test, etc to see exactly how things are going on - if they are legitimate and on the up and up. Once they really know, then they will act on it.
Advice to Senior Management
DO the renewables. Just find a way.
