    Pros

Passionate staff - most are highly intelligent, well-traveled, and ecologically aware. Plenty of events/opportunities to get to know people outside your program, as well as members of the executive team. Lots of opportunities to help shape systems and create new efficiencies. A majority of positions are promotions from within.

Awesome site in the Bay Area with nice walking trails, a super-affordable onsite gym, free shuttle to MacArthur BART. Very generous 401k match.

    Cons

Each team has a different culture. Like any company, the experience varies according to the manager style. Business growth relies on early adopters of sustainability values, requiring frequent adjustments to and forecasting of the market.

    Advice to Management

Continue with recent improvements - in technology, policies, management.

  2. Average length of stay is ~3 years. For a reason.

    Pros

Location in an upscale modern office complex with shuttle to BART. Decent 401(k) match, but long term committment might be bad opportunity cost and not be worth it. Most staff are thoughtful well-meaning people. People who stick around have new titles.

    Cons

Upper mangement is gunning for growth and risks losing staff that are already maxed out. This company sheds people constantly because salaries of the younger staff are too low, and many are regularly overworked. People cut all the time.

    Advice to Management

If upper management are looking for more money, then they need to
    1) spread the wealth to younger staff
    2) instantly reward staff taking on extra work and going the extra mile. Annual bonuses vaguely tied to flat-out to-the-limit work done 9 months ago do not cut it!
    3) get realistic about Bay Area cost of living or lose more staff. A 401(k) does not pay rent.

    Pros

staff is idealistic and while each division may not be in the "sustainability" limelight, the contributions of all make for a growing company with a real commitment to positive change - environmentally based. The climate group is making excellent headway internationally.
Benefits are excellent and pay is decent
People are great (more are 20s-30s) - nerdy but not all...
and there are fun employee events planned by an excellent office manager

    Cons

its a heads down, computer focused ..more serious environment... lots of work! there are different groups with various leaders, and most are moving to a real bottom line focus

    Advice to Management

focus on what is working and needs support to grow; and put resources there even if not profitable in short term.

Majority of personnel are welcoming, friendly and energized to work. Office environment/culture tries to practice what they preach regarding sustainability.

    Cons

Management decisions can be scattered and unpredictable.

    Advice to Management

Engage the youthful, passionate personnel in your entry-level positions to build trust, loyalty, and maybe some great ideas!

    Pros

Great principals, with a global mission bringing the value of certification to the market. Great employees that have solid technical and professional backgrounds and clear commitment to environmental goals

    Cons

employees are treated like the adversary, with some questionable policies related to equity and fair practice. management is very personalized due to the founders' personal involvement. High turnover with talent.

    Advice to Management

trust your employees more and treat them better

    Pros

Great field of work. Great co-workers. Good pay and benefits.

    Cons

Not up to date with technology. Programs aren't vetted prior to being released. Marketing operates in the dark ages. Senior leadership should step down and hire a well-versed CEO with advanced leadership and busness skills to run the company. This is a scientific company with no scientists on staff. Staff is shuffled around without cause.

    Advice to Management

Hire a CEO and take a back seat.

    Pros

The people are easy to work with, highly skilled, and very progressive. The programs are inspiring to be involved with. The company supports employees through a balanced work/life philosophy. Great benefits and 401K. A number of people have been there for years. Great reputation for honesty and scientific knowledge. Affordable services.

    Cons

Leadership can stifle growth for the most part. Certain divisions are poorly structured and not balanced. Leadership has a tendency to make hasty decisions without firm research and program vetting. The actual work space is poorly designed and uninspiring. Not contemporary as compared to other workplaces. Hire turn over rate in certain areas of the company.

    Advice to Management

Structure the marketing department with a head of marketing and then managers for each division. Make sure there are also marketing coordinators in place to support staff adequately. Create an actual marketing plan for each area of marketing and outreach and then map out a timeline for project completion. Hire a PR agency, a SEO agency, and digital advertising agency to get projects seen. Assign a marketing budget for each year. Be realistic about who you hire in relationship to what you can afford to pay. Don't put out programs unless you have a financial structure in place to support them. Focus on program branding as opposed to corporate branding. Each program should have its own plan and strategy clearly defined before the program is put into place.

    Pros

-Employees are allowed to have a flexible schedule
-Colleagues (especially at the lower levels) are young, active, and friendly
-The subject matter is often interesting

    Cons

-Little room for advancement combined with low pay means that people come here until they've gained some skills, then move on to greener pastures
-Weak industry presence and inability to work well with leaders in the field
-Mis-management from the top down: the company needs a new business plan

    Advice to Management

You need to pay more to retain quality people and should also stop trying to always forge your own way in terms of standard development. Sometimes you need to work with others and make incremental changes instead of going it alone (and having no success).
