ProsSolid software products, great product support and knowledgable consultants

ConsManagement changes strategy every year, alot of software products have been added to portfolio through acquiring different companies - thus product suite may overlap functionality and/or lack standardization

Advice to Senior ManagementInvest more efforts in standardizing internal processes on delivering to clients.

Solutions Architect

I worked at SERENA Software full-time for more than 5 years

Pros- Prior to current exec mgmt, great environment to grow professionally, employees were respected and well paid, sound execution and solid products. In some ways, we were ahead of the curve with Mashups and trying to go cloud.

ConsExec mgmt changes the company direction and vision annually without successful execution. People are no longer valued as we once were. Raises have been non-existent for over 4 years. Going private was a terrible mistake as it handcuffed innovation.

Advice to Senior ManagementValue your people. They are your greatest asset.

Relatively bad company

I worked at SERENA Software full-time for more than 3 years

Pros- good office
- IT staff is really responsive
- compensation is OK though the benefits package get worse every year
- Some of the employees know what they are doing

Cons- failing business model
- failing product strategy - "old" products maintenance revenue is dropping dramatically and have little to no new sales, as there are much better open source alternatives, the "new" products are joke
- the overall quality of products and customer satisfaction is awful, some of the customers are in constant escalation mode - it takes over 50 support tickets and multiple escalation to get a problem solved for 6 months-1 year period.
- overall atmosphere of politics and backstabbing, multiple changes in senior leadership in the last 4 years.
- total lack of accountability and measurement of success. promotions are considered on a "who is on my side" method
- more directors and VPs than developers
- due to the 7 wave of layoffs in the last 4 years there is serious lack of deep technical expertise

Advice to Senior Management- people that are in charge for product strategies should get a new career far away from this field
- sluggish and inefficient process and internal tools
- make good products, that the users will like

Fun technology and solutions

Senior Solutions Architect (Former Employee)

I worked at SERENA Software full-time for more than a year

ProsMost of the technology/solutions are sound and fun to work with. There are some very tenured experts who are very willing to provide assistance when called upon. The Solution Architect team is great to work with. Everyone will step up and help each other.

Cons- Solution Architects (sales engineers) are not respected by upper management. Even if an SA makes quota, it doesn't mean he/she will go to club. If a Regional Director, Account Manager, or Inside Sales Rep makes quota, he/she goes to club.
- Corporate direction changes too often to be effective. There are good ideas, but lack of lasting commitment causes them to fade.
- Some products are neglected (reduced R&D) and therefore harbor issues.

Advice to Senior ManagementRecognize and include Solution Architects as an integral part of the sales team. SAs should be treated the same as other members of the sales team. If an SA makes quota, then he/she should go to club.

Poor Company -- Lost with No Direction

ProsThe rank and file people are great to work with. The compensation is average and benefits are above average for the area

ConsThere is no positive direction here. There have been many layoffs and people left are severely overworked. The company is now selling "product suites" which simply are vaporware - they do not exist. New CEO is only interested in sales and bottom line so products are poor quality. Morale is horrible. No salary increases for 3 years and counting.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou have good people working for you who want to make a difference. Stop abusing this good will as everyone is looking for new opportunities. There are other things which are as important as sales and quality is one of them. Your "Quality Initiative" is just lip service -- fix it or continue to pay the price.

ProsGreat teamwork in the field, synergy exists, some products are reliable, direct management team is respectful and supportive, fun group of folks to work with

ConsLack of proper messaging, lack of communication between marketing and sales, too much executive turnover, way too much communication from the top regarding direction of company.

Advice to Senior ManagementShow more dedication to employees, make sure products integrate as advertised, don't oversell products, imporve communication internally, choose a course and stick to it.
