    Pros

-generally a good group of people (though folks under 30 will feel like children among the rest of the company, which is predominantly 45+) -very good work/life balance - no OT, rarely if ever have to take work home

    Cons

-lousy benefits package -no perks -executive staff has no vision/passion -revolving door of CEOs -boring product line -no path for growth -performance reviews are perfunctory not beneficial/constructive

    Advice to Management

figure out a business strategy and stick to it

    Pros

    Nice people. Good IT Dept

    Cons

This company relies on its mainframe business for everything. Other products just fail. There was no realistic vision. Mediocre skill levels.

    Advice to Management

Prune off divisions that aren't profitable.

    Pros

Solid software products, great product support and knowledgable consultants

    Cons

Management changes strategy every year, alot of software products have been added to portfolio through acquiring different companies - thus product suite may overlap functionality and/or lack standardization

    Advice to Management

Invest more efforts in standardizing internal processes on delivering to clients.

    Pros

    - good office - IT staff is really responsive - compensation is OK though the benefits package get worse every year - Some of the employees know what they are doing

    Cons

    - failing business model - failing product strategy - "old" products maintenance revenue is dropping dramatically and have little to no new sales, as there are much better open source alternatives, the "new" products are joke - the overall quality of products and customer satisfaction is awful, some of the customers are in constant escalation mode - it takes over 50 support tickets and multiple escalation to get a problem solved for 6 months-1 year period. - overall atmosphere of politics and backstabbing, multiple changes in senior leadership in the last 4 years. - total lack of accountability and measurement of success. promotions are considered on a "who is on my side" method - more directors and VPs than developers - due to the 7 wave of layoffs in the last 4 years there is serious lack of deep technical expertise

    Advice to Management

    - people that are in charge for product strategies should get a new career far away from this field - sluggish and inefficient process and internal tools - make good products, that the users will like

    Pros

nice technology both mainframe and distributed environment been around more than 30 years with loyal customers large global customer base

    Cons

ibm, ca and free software huge competition poor management lack of long term enterprise direction

    Advice to Management

john nugent will soon learn to respect hardworking people and not treat them as disposable assets. After to much bla, bla, bla, this q1 was even worse than the previous year (in the middle of the worst financial crisis).

    Pros

A lot of great people still work there. Not sure what keeps them there. Under Jeremy Burton, there was respect for employees. In return, employees worked hard trying to market, sell, and implement inferior products.

    Cons

Products are sub-par and product strategy constantly changing. Current CEO (Nugent) has no respect for employees..wants "yes men". Classic case of "emperor has no clothes".

    Advice to Management

Treat your employees with respect. There are a lot of great employees that have kept the place afloat. Figure out who they are before you lose them all.

    Pros

Work from Home permitted sometime Some people are nice

    Cons

After laying off people constantly for one year, this company is extremely under-staffed. However mgmt refuse to recognize this fact and want their employees to work hard while getting no real benefit (no bonus, no stock options, constantly working 12+ hours a day). And many good people were let go because they didn't get along with the view of sr. mgmt.

    Advice to Management

Hire more people if you want to get the job done, rather than setting unrealistic goals for the remaining team.

    Pros

    * Flexible work from home time. * Most people are nice.

    Cons

    * No ESPP. No bonus for regular engineers. No stock option for regular engineers. I.e., you are either a manager (with bonus) or director (with options), or an engineer with nothing but salary. * When the ends did not meet, layoff was used. For three times in a row.

    Advice to Management

Many grassroots engineers are here only waiting for the job market getting hotter. Do something before that happens.

  11. Serena software - as cool a place to work as you could imagine.

    Pros

Serena software has morphed from a staid old company using old fashion waterfall development techniques into a vibrant software development company committed to agile development. Management has also redirected our energies into cutting edge technologies like Web 2.0, Mashups and SaaS. It's a fun place to work where I feel like I'm making a difference. Serena is committed to community giving. Every quarter we give a day of work to one aspect of the community or another. This has included a beach cleanup day, a day cleaning, painting and refurbishing a boy's and girl's club and a day working with disadvantaged youth. Serena is a stable company with a reliable income stream from its existing product base. In today's economy this is very reassuring. Management understands that this is a company of people and has demonstrated a committment to its employees.

    Cons

Because we are private, the opportunities for most employees to participate in stock option plans are limited. On the other hand, who's making money on options nowadays?

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the good work.
