    I worked at SGS full-time

    Pros

10 days of paid vacation per year, 401K, paid sick time, health benefits, mostly non-stressful work environment

    Cons

This company suffers greatly from poor management and often does the opposite of servicing the customer by exaggerating minor issues into bigger problems. Employees are often forced to give customers vague and incomplete solutions to problems in absence of information that they do not have access to, or are not allowed to divulge. Certain individuals in mid-level management are disrespectful to employees. Numerous complaints have been made by several employees about the lack of respect that these individuals possess toward lower level employees and no action has been taken. Lower level employees are rarely given a chance for advancement, and the company often hires from outside of the company instead of promoting qualified current employees from within. On the job training is almost non-existent. New employees are often forced to teach themselves most of what they need to do in order to preform their jobs effectively and have to "learn by doing" a job that they do not know how to do. For some of the programs that this company services, some members of management openly admit that they do not know anything about how some aspects of the program are supposed to be serviced. Lower level employees are often given tasks that are the responsibility of Mid-level management to complete themselves, because these individuals do not wish to work on certain days of the week. Employees are asked by these individuals to do the instructed tasks under their supervisor's log-ins, to make it appear that the supervisors did the tasks, not the employees. This is not only unethical, but it may be in breach of contract with other associated parties.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn to respect your employees and treat them as equals instead of taking down to them. Hire adequate managers with actual supervisory experience. Invest in adequate training for new employees and on-going training for current employees. SOLVE YOUR CUSTOMER'S PROBLEMS INSTEAD OF MAKING THEM WORSE.

    Pros

A great variety of global employment opportunities across all the busniess lines.

    Cons

No clear growth strategy except to put pressure on employees to do more with less.
Business model seems to be to assimilate small, profitable companies to support a burdensome, inefficient corporate bureaucracy.
    High potential for unethical behavior.

Listen to the boots on the ground - they are the ones that make your roles possible.

    Pros

Challenging career. Long term contracts with state agencies offered some degree of stability.
Dedicated people who tried their best to meet difficult goals.

    Cons

Senior management forced cost reductions and jeopardized contracts due to poor service. Senior management is quick to judge without checking facts

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

People are assets, not commodities. Senior management ruled by fear and were unwilling to implement reasonable changes. Most employees lack the ability to advance. I wish I could rate this company lower than the '1'

    Pros

An OK place to pick up experience and leave.
     Co-workers are civil
Multiple year contracts with state agencies allows for some stability

    Cons

Upper management fails to learn from their mistakes. Management has extremely poor communication skills. Management likes to gossip about their employees. Management's favorite quote - 'You should be happy you have a job'

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Replace the QA and IT management with capable managers. Upper management lacks technical skills and management talent. They waste too much time blaming their employees

I have been working at SGS

    Pros

They pay well for corporate positions.

    Cons

The most unorganized organization I have ever seen. They do not give salary increases when promised. You have to beg to get one. Local managers have their own agenda and do not want help from within the organization.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide more support to the representatives responsible for benefits, hiring and employee relations. Do not bring in individuals who have masters degrees in psychology and management organization. This is a joke. Do you need to give a blue collar workers that work rotating shifts a psychology test to see if they can perform their job. Any time you bring in an outside person to evaluate your company for effectiveness they cut jobs. They show that they are saving the company money. The company could save money by not hiring worthless people like this and listening more to their current employess to correct internal effectivness.

My experience at SGS Life Science Services in North America was disappointing.

    Former Employee - Business Manager

I worked at SGS full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The services that the SGS labs offer are excellent. The labs have efficient procedures that ensure the client receives excellent customer service and high quality results. The labs have an excellent reputation in the market place.

    Cons

Upper management communicates to employees in a way that puts employees on the defensive. They are aggressive and confrontational and manage by intimidation. There is no training and very little investment in the success of its employees. Management communicates by threats instead of constructive advice. It is a negative atmosphere.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have your upper "managers" participate in a course on professionalism in the work place.
