As a fast growing company, I got exposure to the many technologies that the company used and produced.

Tech Support (Former Employee) Calgary, AB (Canada)

ProsBenefits were great. The summer co-op program which gives students opportunity to gain experience. Employees could choose, to an extent, what time they start work. This allowed for some work-life balance. Team members freely associated with each other.

ConsCulture suddenly changed from encouraging employee growth to oppression-like operations. Some benefits such as on-site medical consultation was taken away from employees. Successful managers are those that strive to please the higher ranks. Honesty and objective views are not welcome.

Advice to Senior ManagementIf you focus on equipping your employees with tools necessary to do their jobs as well as provide them a less stressful work environment, they will be more productive.

Some people are SMARTians, most aren't

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Calgary, AB (Canada)

ProsSome good people, interesting projects, new technologies. Worked with some great people, learned some good skills, delivered a very visible project

ConsPoor management, lack of mentorship, putting jr people into positions of responsibility without the right skills, poor compensation. Probably some of the worst middle managers I've ever experienced

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't sit in your ivory tower and look down at the people who have helped you build the company. Provide incentives like other companies that go public, like shares

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Exciting work but high stress with only average pay

Marketing Manager (Current Employee) Calgary, AB (Canada)

ProsInnovative products that are well-designed, exciting work with international scope, bright people

ConsExtremely heavy workloads and stress levels, high rate of burnout / turnover, salaries not high enough to merit the demands. No real culture, but lots of politics and self-interested behaviour.

Advice to Senior ManagementCelebrate successes. Recognize good work - consistently, not just for "stars" or certain departments. Implement a company-wide effective communications program. Everyone is so busy sifting through email that they have to do their real jobs after hours!

    Life at SMART Technologies

Software Engineer (Former Employee) Calgary, AB (Canada)

ProsMedium-size company evolving to adjust to growth.

ConsComing from a large-sized company, it was an adjustment to working in a grassroots environment. At the same time, it's an opportunity to do things right.

    Advice to Senior ManagementBonne chance.

    Frustrating work environment

Program Manager (Current Employee) Calgary, AB (Canada)

ProsSMART has some very creative people and good ideas. It is one of the few companies in Calgary and even Canada that conducts true product development.

ConsManagement at this company was horrible from the 2006-2012 period. The new team brought in after Apax Partners Private Equity took a majority stake in the company was not experienced or a good cultural fit for the chaos that is the technology industry. The new management team is showing promise, but has not cleaned enough house and still seems to be chasing some of the dubious ideas (ex. video conferencing integration, Microsoft Lync integration) from the previous era. If that weren't bad enough, tablets have made SMART's existing products obsolete in most work and educational environments.

Advice to Senior ManagementMove product quality and usability to the forefront instead of always taking the easy path and repackaging the same old crap. Bring in middle management with tech industry experience, especially on the Product/Program Management side (a Program Manager must have a technical background). Narrow the product focus to two or three key product lines. Throw the relic from the 1990's known as video conferencing in the trash heap and focus on modern collaboration technologies delivered through mobile devices. Find a more innovative reseller network to replace the existing professional audio/visual dealer network. Forget Lync. Microsoft will always keep the truly innovative technologies within its own stack.

    Good opportunity but poorly managed

Product Manager (Former Employee) Calgary, AB (Canada)

ProsOne of the few companies that view technology as an investment and not a required evil. Centrally located with great access to public transit, very nice new building.

ConsPoor pay, limited opportunity for growth
Poor strategic direction and management since the transition from founders.

Advice to Senior ManagementIf you really want to be a competitive tech company, hire execs with related experience from Silicone Valley or Waterloo.

too many hierarchies in the organization,

Manufacturing Support (Current Employee) Calgary, AB (Canada)

Prosnew management has a clear vision of how to turn around the company

Consweak in supplier qualification, new product launching and OEM/ODM monitoring

Advice to Senior Managementcut the hierarchies, strengthen supplier program management, product development and program management

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend
