    Pros

I decided to work here because they are very good at selling the company and its future so I mistakenly decided to take the offer and work for SMART.

    Cons

Sad environment, people shows happiness in front of the management but once they are gone people show how worried they are, insecure, unstable... Now they cut our salaries and they announced that the bonus will be only 50% because the company was down significantly.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

To engage people you don't need to be a clown in front of the audience, you need to be real

I worked at SMART Technologies full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    Nice, new building
    Close to C-Train station
    Many old-timers

    Cons

    Self-centered management
    Dismal health benefits
    Old fashioned, expensive product

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The culture is very self-centered, secretive, and unsupportive to employees morale.
Plenty of male employees with big ego who think that they own the company, like to bully others.
HR is neutral, they seem trying to improve the situation, but their concrete action is still to be seen.
A lot of holidays (PDO, EDO, Vacation) but no chance to take them all (your Manager will play the game to prevent you from taking them all for one reason or another, though you are not busy)
Health benefits: below average. Make sure you negotiate the salary well to compensate.

    Pros

I work with great people who care. Unfortunately product often goes to market when it's not ready. It's a complete fiasco. Product is getting firmware updates in logistic centers and product development continues to make the same stupid mistakes.

    Cons

This is a company that invented a market and was able to get away with a lot of poor quality issues. Now the market is catching up and the same culture persists. Something has to change or this company will be gone soon.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make the product development process far more rigorous.

I have been working at SMART Technologies full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Like most "job seekers" I stumbled across Glass Door and almost skipped the whole SMART interview process due to old reviews and mixed emotions on here. Exceptionally glad that I continued with the interview process, and got to hear about the current culture first hand.

    Very pleased with the company.

Pros: Innovative company, that within the last 1-2 years - has brought on a very promising executive leadership group (CEO, Presidents, Directors) and the outlook of the company has never looked so positive.
Company has just won "Best in Class" for New Kapp product.
Being a company of ~500 employees, and new products being developed, it still runs like a start-up mentality in some ways and really allows you the opportunity to grow and develop multiple skills and also see your ideas/creations come to life.

Very open company - where CEO has a very "open communication" policy. Often shocked at how much is shared with all level of employees. It's nice to be involved and included with all parts of the organization. CEO is very accessible - he often starts small talk with people while grabbing morning coffee.

    Cons

Cons: There was a big company "refresh" to change the culture when the new CEO came onboard.... SMART did some restructuring to keep industry trends to really be seen as a "tech company" with new innovative ideas and a financially responsible..... there were grumbles from the people who were "set-in-their-ways" and wanted it to be the same company as it was for 25 years....... but the new employees that were hired have an upbeat, welcoming approach and a common goal to work towards shared ideas.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep up the great work!

I've worked for some of the corporate tech super-giants.... and I honestly believe that SMART is the tech company that employees will grow the most well-rounded skills and will feel that human-connection instead of just being a number.

    Pros

Beautiful building, close to LRT. Good vacation package. Worked with some great people.

    Cons

Poor Management, terrible politics, cult of personality around the founders. Toxic work environment. Limited cafeteria choices. A place where the ignorant and the desperate land. Sooo many good people left or where chased out of that place.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Quit being two-faced backstabbers. Karma will come back to bite you one day.

    Pros

Some good people, interesting projects, new technologies. Worked with some great people, learned some good skills, delivered a very visible project

    Cons

Poor management, lack of mentorship, putting jr people into positions of responsibility without the right skills, poor compensation. Probably some of the worst middle managers I've ever experienced

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't sit in your ivory tower and look down at the people who have helped you build the company. Provide incentives like other companies that go public, like shares

  9.

As a fast growing company, I got exposure to the many technologies that the company used and produced.

I worked at SMART Technologies full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Benefits were great. The summer co-op program which gives students opportunity to gain experience. Employees could choose, to an extent, what time they start work. This allowed for some work-life balance. Team members freely associated with each other.

    Cons

Culture suddenly changed from encouraging employee growth to oppression-like operations. Some benefits such as on-site medical consultation was taken away from employees. Successful managers are those that strive to please the higher ranks. Honesty and objective views are not welcome.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you focus on equipping your employees with tools necessary to do their jobs as well as provide them a less stressful work environment, they will be more productive.

I have been working at SMART Technologies full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Innovative products that are well-designed, exciting work with international scope, bright people

    Cons

Extremely heavy workloads and stress levels, high rate of burnout / turnover, salaries not high enough to merit the demands. No real culture, but lots of politics and self-interested behaviour.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Celebrate successes. Recognize good work - consistently, not just for "stars" or certain departments. Implement a company-wide effective communications program. Everyone is so busy sifting through email that they have to do their real jobs after hours!
