I worked at SMITH full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

To their credit, SMITH has been able to hire (amazingly!) incredibly smart and talented people. No "mad men" type drama happening after hours in the stairwells.

    Cons

Total lack of transparency from upper management. No one ever really knows what's *really* going on or the direction of the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Just be honest. If things aren't going well, if there's going to be more layoffs (there are), just tell the truth. There's a wealth of talent in the city, but such a poor job has been done to try to "right the ship" that it might be too late.

    Pros

Level 3 has great benefits for their employees. The structure of the company is well built and it is only going forward.

    Cons

They have been continuously acquiring companies and they need to do a better job through this transition than from when they acquired global crossing.

Great people, no management or leadership

I worked at SMITH full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The culture, the people, the camaraderie, the work, engaging with clients, all the fun stuff about being at an agency.

    Cons

The leadership is a star chamber that does not disseminate detailed vision, plans for the future or anything other than "wins". Information is decentralized and lives on people's hard drives or in their brains. No formal standard procedures. Although the merger between Ascentium and Cactus is complete, there are not discernible efforts to integrate the two organizations in order to [present a cohesive, yet differentiating message.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more transparent. Involve the intelligence that resides throughout the organization. There are so many ideas that are never to be heard that would elevate the company, promote cooperation and collaboration and make the company a force to deal with i the marketplace.

If you want a company that feels small that works big, SMITH is the place for you.

    Cons

If you want a company that feels small that works big, SMITH is the place for you. This has down sides but over all is a great place to work.

    I worked at SMITH

    Pros

Pay was decent. Benefits were OK. Free beer, pool, and foosball was nice. The people were great

    Cons

The management has openly lied to all the staff at company meetings and then very visibly failed to acknowledge as much. Very difficult to feel secure.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Get it together.

I worked at SMITH full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great clients, some excellent co-workers and a variety of interesting projects.

    Cons

Poor leadership, narrow vision. Lack of understanding regarding integrated approach to client services. Too siloed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Figure out what you want to be and be that. Constant reorganization, shuffling staff and quarterly layoffs create chaos, not loyalty.

Revolving Door of Leaders (bad ones)

I worked at SMITH full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

At one point, the company had been a great place to work. Cohesive teams, smart people, no overt nonsense from leadership. Low turnover. Steady new business coming in the door.

    Cons

The leadership team lost their way, brought in a long line of characters to run different parts of the business and ultimately ruined a good thing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pick a direction and stick with it. And do it really well.

I have been working at SMITH full-time

    Pros

Flexible work hours and environment are great. There are also a variety of projects, so you frequently get experiences to learn new things. Also, most co-workers are pretty great

    Cons

Staffing needs an overhaul. Some areas never have enough people, some always have people on the bench. It seems every project is always in fire-drill mode, and no one is ever given the proper time to complete a task (across all disciplines)
